A couple of worthies, as we learn from a spectator, fought a duel a day or two since in the back part of the town. After shootiog at each other once without effect, ibe difference was settled to the entire satisfaction of both, and the last seen of them by our informant they were shooting at a mark for two bottles of beer CST For late river favors we acknowledge our indebtedness to the officers of the steamers Edna, Belle of the West and Highlander. Those fond of fishing, shooting and bathing will do well to make the excursion. We are indebted to the Hon. Mr. Tib-betts, M. for a copy of his speech on the annexation of Texas.

IST We are indebted to the master of the British brig Reindeer, arrived here yesterday, for Kingston and Falmouth (Jam.) papers. Impobtakt from Haiti. By the way of Jamaica: we have received important intelligence from Hayti. According to the Kingston '-Ilojal- Gazelle, President Herard's rule in is at an end. The Royal Mail Compa-ny'a steamship Avon has reached Port Royal, having touched at Jacmel, and brings the unexpected information that Guerriet, Due de ChrUtophe, is now President of the whole island of Hayti.

Hernrd was still on the Spanish frontiers. The alarm was twice given at Jacmel that Herard's army was about to make an attack on the town. The fleet belonging to the republic, consisting of one brig of 250 tons, mouotiog from 12 to 14 guns, five schooners and two sloops, all armed, has declared in favor of GuerVier, and were lying at Jacmel when the Avon left. The whole town was in the greatest excitement, and the males'displayed their tattered uniforms, which more resembled the attire of pirates than that of an army. The black party had gained the entire ascendency.

A vessel, supposed to be the Griffon, (a French war steamship,) steering towards Jacmel, was passed by the A von. Several parties in Jacmel sent down specie by the Avon, to be lodged at Kingston, not deeming it sale to let it remain there. The fighting near Aux Cayes, which Capt. Baker reported in New York to have heard while lying off that port, was real. Gen.

He-rard was entirely defeated near there, and his troops dispersed. The refugees who took refuge in Jamaica from the broila in their own island are censured by the Kingston editors for not having remained. With a show of deter- ruination, it is apparent that they could have maintained their ground, say the English editors. A Kingston paper of the 14th ult. furnishes the annexed extract of a letter, dated Gonaives, Jhe6ih CaP na published a manifesto, by which they disown being under" the authority of President Herard.

It was but yesterday that we stated that two girls had been arrested in our midst, while about to do battle with villanbus saltpetre the mail, which -arrived at an early hour, brought us the account of a duel between two colored gentleman in that city of anythingsbut Brotherly Love," Philadelphia.

The particulars of this latter affair we gather from the Native American newspaper. The names of the parties belligerent, who were both boot-blacks and fellow workmen if not actual partners, were William Williams and Charles Johnson we don't think the latter can be any relation to our old friend Sam, inasmuch as the. latter spells his name John-sing-, not ton. The origin of the duel was the fact that Johnson fell in love with a dark fair one, who was claimed exclusively by Williams, and eloped with her to foreign parts," or in other words to New Jersey. Williams sent a challenge over to Johnson, who at once accepted it; and as one second apiece was deemed insufficient, each one appointed two, whose names were John Williams, Peter Ableman, Charles Gregory and George Peterson all colored men and true.

Upon arriving at the field of honor, a retired epot near Gloucester Point, Gregory, one of Jbhnson's seconds, drew the death-doing weapons from his pockets, alleging, at the same time, dat dey was small, but dey would frow aball frew a board," and then presented to each of the belligerents a four inch bright-barrelled pistol. The distance fixed upon was fourteen paces. Williams and Johnson were placed back to back and marchyd seven pacea each, turned and fired without effect. The second round resulted in a similar manner. But at the third fire the whole party were greatly excited, and some of the bystanders insisted upon a nearer approach.

This, however, waa overruled, and they fired, the ball of Williams passing through the hat of Peterson, one of the seconds, who was standing on the Biue ui me mil. "liar now.dar now," claimed the frightened Peterson, I tole now," ex 'em to close, but dey wouldn't. I se mortally wounded, dat I is." At this stage of the honorable proceedings, great confusion prevailed among all the parties, for it was thought that Peterson was really wounded and one of the parties rushed up to him with a bottle of Cologne water and stuck it under his nose. In the midst of the turbulence, some of the Cologne accidentally got into the eye of Gregory, who, writhing under the pain produced by it, suffered his passions totecorae master of his better senses, and declared he would have instant satisfaction at the hands of the gentlemau who held the bottle, and to this end squared himself off and gave Ableman a blow under the left eye, knocking him over. Ableman, in attempting to rise, was caught hold of by Gregory, and they both grappled.

During their struggle, they rolled down to the bottom of the hill into the marsh. This fight, of course, drew the attention of all the parties from the duellists. They struggled there for some minutes, when they were separated bf the other two seconds. Their friends interfering, mutual apologies were made by the two seconds, when a suggestion was made that another shot shouhTbe taken, but Williams interposed and said dat he felt fully conwinced Mr. Johnson was a gentleman ob honah, and entertainin' dis sentimen', he couldn't find it in his heart to fire anoder shot at him." The introduction of this resolution, says the correspondent of the Baltimore American, is regarded as a virtual abandonment of tbe treaty presented to the Senate by those who will sustain it, as it is probable the Southern democratic members will generally do.
