Maarten. Gladys Knight the Pips will join Earth, Wind Fire and other musical stars of the '70s for a five-day extravaganza beginning May 24. The host, comedian Sinbad, plans to bring along an assortment of celebrities, including former NBA star Magic Johnson, and actresses Jasmine Guy and Angela Bas-sett. The concerts will be broadcast live on three American radio networks and taped for a two-hour HBO special possibly airing in August. VANITY'S FAIR: The character Peter Gallagher portrays in (ccaiiiiev una? ifcfcfixjtis WSfF a Align which the worst scenario imaginable becomes plausible.

Schooled in intimidation from early childhood in Brooklyn, Tyson finds physical force is his meal ticket. Starting with trainer Cus D'Amato (played by George C. Scott with far more polish than the real D'Amato had), Tyson hooks up with people who overlook his worst habits because Tyson has the stuff of a boxing champion and that means multimillion-dollar paydays. By the time he falls into the clutches of actress Robin Givens (Kristen Wilson) and promoter-manager Don King (Paul Win-field), Tyson already is spoiled and willful. His maturing as a fighter masks the uncontrollable appetites of a child.

In fact, as hard as "Tyson" sometimes is on its central character, it could have been much harsher two hours is not even enough time to portray all the Call 1-800-Maggies for more information. By R.d. heldenfels Knight-Ridder Tribune News A new movie about Mike Tyson often notes the fighter's love of his pigeons. And it ends with a suggestion that Tyson, once the heavyweight champion of the world, is the biggest pigeon of them all. "Tyson," which premieres Saturday night on Home Box Office, offers no new details about the incident between Tyson and beauty contestant Desiree Washington, which led to Tyson's conviction for rape and a three-year prison stretch.

But in the scenes leading up to that moment, writer Robert Johnson, director Uli Edel and Michael Jai White, the actor playing Tyson, create a portrait of brutality and self-indulgence in trouble Tyson got into outside the ring. White finds the child and the beast in Tyson and portrays both in a way that fits each trait into the same character. But some viewers undoubtedly will wonder if this portrait, based on Jose Torres' book "Fire and Fear," has gone too far, shifting Tyson from an individual to a racial stereotype. Certainly those who claimed racism was a factor in Tyson's rape conviction will invalidate a film that avoids the specifics of his arrest and trial. And viewers may ask if Tyson's ring effectiveness has been overly dramatized.
