THEODORE CLAPF. My soul ig weary of my hfe 'Woo 10:1. In the original Scriptures, the phrue aty $ol often has the force of the flret personal pronoun in the eing alar number. Tbia ia ita meaning in the passage juet quoted. My aoul that ia 14 7 am weary of life." You remember that worde similar to theee were often uttered by the patriarch Job in the season of his severe afflictions.

Rut in the concluding chapters of his history he confesses that they were wrong that they pro ceeded from an improper state of mind from erroneous views of tbe Divine Character and Providence. You are also aware that dissatisfaction with life in, at this day, a prevailing dis ease among all classes of mankind. Thia is not to be wondered at. It is a fault whose cause can be easily explained. Set before you the picture of a very aged man.

Sup pone that he is alone in the world, and treading the thorny desert of adversity. There are no kindred on whom he can lean in his solitary da scent to the tomb. He walks amidst the graver of his children. Tbe feneration to which he be longed has departed and left him behind. It seems as if he were a forgotten one.

There is no home to afford him lore, sympathy and pro tection. Perhaps he has been very wicked and rreligioua. This augments unspeakably the gloom of his condition. Tbe retrospect of hie career is cheered by no monuments of virtue, honor and usefulness. lie has led a low, meao, base, earthly aud selfish life.

Poor man I Must he not exclaim, it is better for one to die than to live I But we need not have recourse to an extreme case. Consider, for a moment, those allotments, in which we all participate. The life of every one, no matter what the degree of his goodness, is a mingled web, made up of the alternations ol health and sickness, jey and sorrow, light and darkness; severe endurance, gloomy changes, multifarious and unavoidable ills. Setting aside religion, how little gratification have we derived from tkffe actual course of human events How many bitter disappointments have befallen ust How often have we felt the painful sundering of tbe ties of sympathy and friendship! How many of our weeks have been saddened by the loss of those to whom we were bound by affec tions strong aa life itself? Perhaps tbe most prominent objects that rise up to our view a memory traces the past, are tbe death bed, the shroud, the coffin and the last sad offices per. formed to the beings of our loved companion ship.

Reflect, that the sun or this morning sheds his blessed beams upon millions in a state of abject. down trodden and starring pauperism. Can they be satisfied with hunger! Reflect what multitudes are in orphanage, compelled, alone and friendless, to prosecute the rugged journey of life; what multitudes live and die the nnpitied victims of injustice and oppression I How aiany, from the beginning to the grave, wear the heavy, galling chains of unrighteous servitude and dependence I None but the Omni scient sees what numbers are at this moment on beds of sickness and pain and exclaiming, in tbe words of the text, My soul is weary of my life." Since we entered the church thia morn ing hundreds hare breathed out their spirits into the hands of God, the Giver; and before these services close, I hundreds more will have passed through tbe dark and dying struggle. Many sur. vivors by their departure will be subjected to suf ferings, which must last till they, in their tarn, will be called to enter upon tbe mysterious realms of the dead.

A superficial view of this eubject is enough to fill us with melancholy and gloom. Now to be perfectly frank, I must say that to me it seems impossible for a person to be satis fied with life, who regards its pains and looses in the light of real, positive, absolute, unmixed evils. By an absolute evil is meant one that can do no good to the sufferer can redound in no respect whatever to his benefit; is a diminution, draw back, or negative quantity In the system of his happinesa I need not pause to prove that we are physically unable to love pain, want, sorrow and degradation. On this topic it is hardly poa sible for ua to err. For we read that the peer less, immaculate 5gn of Ood, when looking forward to the agonies flf tbe cross, shuddered and recoiled from the prospect In view thereof he perspired drops of blood, and uttered the mem orable prayer, Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me." But at length ke drank ii with a calm, unfaltering trnst in Heaven.

And an apostle tells us that he was enabled to do so by a consideration of the joy that was set before This signifies, as all expounders grant that Jesus submitted to the shame and agony of the cross, on acconnt of the good that he foresaw would accrue from it good to himself, to the family of man, and the universe of his Father. The Saviour bids us remember that we all have a cross to bear. Can we do it manfully and cheerfully, without a faith like that which he possessed! Suppose that now you were labor ing under some affliction, loss of relative, friend, health, property, or anything else. If you fell certain that it was working out for you a great good which you could uot otherwise enjoy which would make your entire existence more bright, desirable and happy would you not be resigned, patient and even joyful We submit to the pain of baving a tooth extracted, the amputation of a limb, nauseous medicines, and ra rious forms of self denial to obtain a trifliDg pro limitation of life and health. This is wise.

What infinitely stronger motives urge hs to bow to those apparently adverse ordinances and appointments which the Creator has introduced, to prepare us for forms of happiness, grand and lovely beyond the reach or tnougbt and lmtgina tion. He who anticipates the bright results of an earthly discipline, so vividly portrayed in the New Testament, must be dead to the suffering of the present world. What are they in com parison with that preponderating, incomprehen sible, endless, ever growing futurity revealed by Jesua Faith in his cross draws aside the curtain of the senses, and enables the believer to gaze uDon the wonders of a spiritual universe. He can no longer doubt He sees he feels that ex ternal condition and circumstances are nothing that conduct and character, wisdom and affections are everything. They make the man.

The oblivious waters of time and change may roll over, but cannot erase them. They only stamp thereon the seal of an endless perpetutity When the disciple stands upon the sublime sum mit of Christian faith, the world, with all it attraetlnmi. Is at his feet They dwindle to nothing when contrasted with that succeeding state, stretching on beyond the rales of earth, and resplendent with glories which cab never be eclipsed. Let any person be able from the heart to otter snch language as the following: "I am Indeed in very lowly circumstances; At the most de pressed point ia the scale of worldly advantages Nobody knows me or cares for in a I am sot related to those generally termed fortunate and powerful the great in abilities, possessions aad success; who are caressed and adored by crowds of admirers, ana whose) names are per haps floated om the breath of mlllioas from eoev tinea ta continent, till they wAoorapejjs tae globe. I moat deacend to the dost aaAAewa, aav hoaored and aawaef.

Bit I repine not Tbs hnmUenesa At uj state has bAa vrtatasi by laflrdt Ltm, rJt wt't witka, jt )j enough for me to know that it is fitted toreak down within me the vile, sordid, earthy and ael fish to prepare me for a final admission to the land of spirits and the felicities of an immortal world. I can say There's a good for each evil, a Joy for each pain And always tbe sunshine comes after the rain. Aye. a glorious world is tbis green earth of ours, A beautiful garden, witb freshest of flowers And lhmgb thorns may be mingled its roses among, O'er all who will pluck them, their fragrance is fiang. And be who In coiling the fairest, is torn To bleeding and pain by tbe merciless thorn.

Fmda a balm in each leaf when the task is but done. And forgets all the pain in the sweets that are won." Supported i)y such exalted views of Providence, can the believer in Jesus ever indulge in the murmuring accents of tbe text My soui is weary of my life." I go a step further. Suppose that pain and death were banished from the earth that we possesed unfailing youth, bloom, beauty and fortune even then, after a lapse of time, of certain ages and centuries, looking out upon tbe same undiversified scenes of heaven and earth, we should grow tired. Our existence, becoming au insupportable burden, we should long to take our departure hence, though it might be through tbe dark portals of the grave. For the mind is so formed that it could not be forever satisfied with this narrow, circumscribed orb, but a few thousand miles in circumference.

It was made to travel successively through those planets, worlds, and systems upon systems, stretching onward to infinitude, which constitute the inconceivable inheritance that the Father has in store for his children. Nothing but the prospect of an ever widening universe can roll a full tide of glory upon the soul, and replenish, with raptures unutterable, its capacious powers, its immortal hopes and aspirations. But I may be told that thia is a mere fancy sketch that the vast majority around us who have cast off religious principles are entirely satisfied wilh the world, just as it is, notwith standing the aforesaid limitations and sufferings. Happy without a religious faith I I do not be lieve there is such a person living. My friends, let me ask you to trace this dark line of mortal being from birth till it is lost in tbe abyss of death.

Can you point out to me a single object that I can take to my bosom and say things heaven this meets and fills my every want I Apart from religion, can you see an asylum on earth to which we can repair in age, bereavement, sickness or death As tbe body cannot subsist without air, light and food, so the mind must droop and die without sympathy, love and hope in tbe Infinite One. I am well aware that amidst youth and pros perity we may manage to get along tolerably for a short time devoid of the resources of evangelical faith. But when health and constitution give way, when novelty and excitement wear off, when pleasures pall upon the taste, (and that ia a speedy, inevitable recompense of sin,) when fortune frowns, when that current which we vainly fancied would waft us to the haven of repose suddenly dries np, when affliction lays a heavy hand upon ns, and disappointment settles like an incubus npon our hearts in scenes like these witbout an Almighty Friend to lean npon we must sink in absolute despair we must feel as if we were bnt worms of tbe dust as fleeting aod unsubstantial as the shadow of a cloud which flies across the field and is remembered no more. Let this truth, then, sink deeply into our hearts, that life must of necessity be wearisome so long as we have nothing to trust in but the uncertain poeaeaaions and troubled pleasures of this transitory world. With a merely temporal inheritance the mind must be crushed to the very dust with a weight that knows no alleviation.

Nothing bnt God can bear up the aoul and make it light joyous and elastic Another cause of dissatisfaction with life is an undue, idolatrous, extravagant estimate of the value of property aa a means of happiness. Tbe lova and pursuit of gain are not forbidden by tbe precepts of the Gospel. If all persons living sdopted Christian principles all would have the means of a comfortable subsistence. But we should most scrupulously guard against attaching a false valuation to tbe importance of terrestrial possessions. How often since our eettlemant in this city have we seen gentlemen of polished minds, large experience and respectable attainments commit the dreadful deed of self murder during a paroxysm of grief brought on by merely pecuniary misfortunes.

I would not speak lightly of such instances of human wretchedness and infirmity. I can conceive that to behold the 'abric of independence of one's self and family, reared by the honorable and persevering exertions of years in a place like this, brushed away in a moment by the hand of misfortune, must pierce the bosom with an anguish which words have not the power to describe. Yet after all, what has such a person lostl You may regard this as a weak, childish question. He has lost, you tell me, houses, stores, plantations, all his funds in bank and his credit on the exchange. More, he has lost caste in society.

His former friends have deserted him he ia expelled from the circles of fashionable life. Indeed I What a melancholy result! Still, I ask, what does all tins amount to i I will reply by a quotation from the writings of an ancient Greek philosopher belonging to the sect of Stoics No events, no reverses of earth (he remarks) can deprive a wise man of happiness, for it is derived from the inalienable riches of a well trained intellect, noble sentiments, just and beneficent life." With the more exalted instructions of the Bible before me, I ask again, what has this man actually lost Has he forfeited that immortal being whose powers go out beyond the narrow horizon of time and lay hold on eternity; which will one day be adorned with those heavenly robes of worth and wisdom, in comparison with which all the magnificence of earth is but vanity and dust I Deprived of affluence and iis empty honors, he may live and die in "the lowly thatched cottage," and enjoy the boundless riches of God, Jesus and immortality. He may live and die in some humble cabin, unadorned with wealth, unknown to fame, anknown to the flaunting scenes, pomps and fashions of silly mortals, and nevertheless walk the globe with the freedom, nobility and joy of angels. He may live and die poor, and yet tread the path of virtue bind around his browa those ama ranthine flowers which bloom in the vales of Paradise; discharge the noblest duties of earth be clothed with ita highest honors and partake of ita purest delights. what to me ia the largest inheritance of earth, if I forget God amid his mercies ii the light of His reconciled conn te nance through Jesus do not warm my soul, nor the love of man ennoble my heart, nor the hope of a better world shed its beams npon the dart nesa of my grave.

I will glance at another cause of dissatisfaction with life, intimately allied to this, though a dia tinctlon obtains between them. We are all nnder the delusion that some other condition ia life would give as resources of enjoyment more extensive than those which we now possess The true doctrine to be inculcated is, that all tke conditions of life ordained by Heaven bare aeaaa tially the same means of happiaeaa. I have not time now to suggest the qualifications iweoiaite to prevent this sentiment from being miaondsr stood. For they have the same bodies, Jth their wondroos mechanism and powers of action and enjoyment the same attributes of mind, reason, eon science, joy, hope and immortal aapiraUicrwa. They have the same access to that aaUsfaotJen which is derived from the pursuits of basiaeaw, books, society, and the gentle intoreoarsa of friendship. On tbis topic we all need adraonitioa.

God has given us enough of everything "pr rtalaiag to life and goodliness. In addition to natara, we have the Bible with its inexhAuatible mines of troth and beauty. Who sees not Providence all good and wise. Alike in what it gives, aad what denies But we misuse, despise and trample under foot the gifts of our Heavenly Father. We virtually impeach hia wisdom and goodness.

Thus we spend our days in a silly, fttUgulas; race of mortified pride and vanity, till the kaeU of mortality sounds, the curtain falls a pa thia stage of action, and our restless, nnbleat hearts forget to beat and all their flattering anxietlea are bushed in the silence of the tomb.
