A group of students from African Road Elementary School in Vestal decided they'd like to write letters to the editor, too. The letter-writing project completed a class study of styles of letters. The third-graders' teacher, James M.

Barvainis, sent the letters to the Evening Press. Here's what is on the minds of these 8 and 9-year-olds: Lousy cafeteria food, which can't compete with Big Macs: "I feel that the people in school are right about the school's food, and their price is an outrage," explains Tad Horowitz. President Carter's mistakes in the Mideast: "I don't think he's helping in the Mid-East peace treaty at all," writes Adam Schnitzer. Television reruns: "The Brady Bunch keeps repeating the shows over and over again. Why can't they make a hew show for the Brady Bunch?" asks Tom O'Hara.

Candy: "I feel that stores should stop putting out too many sweets," writes Tracey Nole. Cigarette smoking: "I think cigarettes was a bad idea becuse lots of people are dieing becuse of it. Why do stors sell it now," asks Jennifer Sommerstad. And then there is Meghan Gross, who wrote the longest letter of all about the unlikely subject of what's right about the Triple Cities. She mentions "good shopping, low crime, art centers like Roberson, low pollution, lots of resarunts for all kinds of eating." I've been here twice from other parts of the country and if weather is their biggest problem, and they offered the good things that life is all about, I'd be happy "to go back.

But from a 9 year olds experiences, this is one of the best places I have lived," writes Meghan. Maybe the Chamber of Commerce should hire Meghan. -l or "I don't like when good t.v. programs go off the air. then they put lousy ones in place of them, but they won't go off." Ask iBcth Kurst "California Man" makes the comparison to the Move conveniently evident Cheap Trick is a bit more adventurous on "High Roller" with obvious Beatles-like harmonies. The words of "Auf Wiedersehen" may be silly, but it doesn't matter.

This song closes this side by literally bowling you over with its sheer musical power. Cheap Trick practically duplicates this musical feat on side two with another strong string of songs, beginning this time with a WhoMove hybrid, "Take Me Back," and another rather amibitious song, "On the Radio," with the group's strong harmonies once again apparent. The hectic pace of the album finally slows down a bit, with no diminishing of quality, with the title song slowly creeping along in a Beatles' "I Want You" nature. "Stiff Competition," however, ignites the Chris fe; CaisonfcgJ things. They DEAR BETH: Have I got problems! I am the skinniest, shortest and, people say, the "most loved by boys" of all the girl in my grade.

I feel out of it because all my friends are taller than the males. Plus I have the biggest bust in the crowd. I seed help! TRICIA DEAR TRICIA: Don't give up. Kids who are going to be very tall usually do their growing early. Those who are going to be short to medium start their growth spurt later.

You probably will grow some more. The average girl is taller than the average boy around seventh and eighth grade, and neither likes it much. Boys are more confortable with shorter girls. Males certainly admire good breast development, however, and you may be happy about this later on. Meantime, some of the girls are jealous and trying to make you feel uncomfortable.

Don't let it get you You may have no interest in boys at the moment, but you probably will later. Make them your friends now and it will stand you in good stead in the future. album's spunk, working with the same musical muscle as "Auf Wiedersehen," and "How Are You" closes the album in the same bouncy spirit of "I Want You to Want Me" from the "In Color" album. Cheap Trick's instantly likeable "Heaven Tonight" easily surpasses its other two albums in overall quality. But besides being Cheap Trick's best effort, "Heaven Tonight" is simply one of the best albums to be released this year by anyone.

DANGEROUS TIMES Bethnal Vertigo 9102028 (Import) Bethnal's debut is another recent release with some definite Who musical traits and the results come across just fine. The album's focal points are Bethnal's update of "Baba O'Riely" enhanced by George Cuspo's violin, which is an important ingredient In Bethnal's other songs and "Leaving Home," which drifts into a "Won't Get Fooled Again" style chorus. Elsewhere, the surroundings of these two entries could be fitted into the current punk-rock classification in which group has been caught in England. The musical contents, however, equals the power delivering it, unlike some of the groups preceeding Bethnal which relied mostly on power. At fit st, Bethnal may appear to be a punk-run group with some novelty violin, but after a few listenings, Bethnal definitely proves to be much HEAVEN TONIGHT Cheap Trick Epic 35312 In a little more than a year, Cheap Trick has released three albums, each one better than its predecessor.

The group's first album, "Cheap Trick," produced by veteran producer Jack Douglas, was an auspicious debut. And it proved that Cheap Trick was not going to be another Douglas production which listeners were drawn to only because of his presence. But Cheap Trick was still playing in their mid-America homeland around Chicago after that first album when its second album, "In Color," was released late last year, heads started to turn their way as they fullfilled the promise of its debut. The album was a more detailed outing with new producer Tom Werman and sparked many sixties comparisons to the group. And now, the second time around with Werman on "Heaven Tonight," the results are evep better, as Cheap Trick fuses the musical spirit of the sixties with seventies technology and an irresistible relentless musical flair.

"Heaven Tonight" starts with four exceptional rockers, lead by "Superstar," a soaring entry with "Who's synthesizers sneaking in and out of the choruses. Cheap Trick then races through the ELO-like "Sitting on Top of the World" with finesse, while the updated cover of the Move's DEAR BETH: I joined my high school chorus and since then all my old friends, evea my boyfriend, have beea avoiding me. I hear them laugh when I walk by. All the other -kids think chorus kids are fags or pris-sies. How can I make my friends understand that I just like to ling? MISS CONFl'SED DEAR CONFUSED: A lot of high school students play follow-the-leader because it is comforting when you feel insecure to look and act jus) like everybody else.

But each person is unique, and must learn to please himself. Always trying to please the crowd denies your individuality, and squashes your imagination and initiative..
