From the Brazos. Two numben of the American Flag reached ua this morning through the mail. We find little in them worthy of particular note. The follow ing it from the number of the 27th December The enterprising and daring express rider, Harry Love, arrived at Brownsville on the 20th inst. Ha has been employed exploring the country from Rio urande Ulty to oredo, tor tlie purpose oi tne construction of a military road between those places.

We understand that the rout selected by Mr. Love was aDDroved of by the U. 8. hngtneers. A road has been const! acted from Da is's Rancho, or Rio Grande City, to Loredo, thirty feet wide.

The distance, we are informed, is one hundred and twenty five miles. Five wells have been duff along tnis road equl dutant, and good water lounu. tie road is excellent, passing over table land. The soil good, the country throrgh which it passes being well suited to agricultural purposes, abounding in wild horses, cattle aud antelope. Droves of hundreds and thousands are in viuw at a time.

Mr. Love reports that a Mexican had been killed by Indians the day before his arrival at Loredo. Indians were in sight several during the construction of the road referred to. Mr. Love cane from RioGrpqde City to Brownsville, in as near a straight line as the country would permit.

His course was 8. s. fc. He came to the river forty miles above Brownsville. He states that a good road can be had between Brownsville and Rio Urande City, within a distance of 'Jo miles.

A public meeUng has been held at Point Isabel, to set forth the necessity of establishing at that point a part ot entry. The considerations in support of this proposition are set forth ith force. and urged upon the Representatives ot Texas in Congress. $83 0.85 mxram $128130 10 0)1 12 tWtf 41 $90z41 Fine Blank Book. rfHIS being tbe season fur epetung new sets of Books, we JL invite the attention of riawi banta to or vary superior assortment of LEDGERS, JOURNALS, DAY BOOKS, and all the other auxiliary Book asad ia keeping accounts, made of tbe beat stock and just opened, which we offer at prices to suit tbe time Call aad examine, before purchasing, at dJI 3t H.

The original name of the tribe was Dah ko tah, the interpretation of which is said to be a confederacy or a united nation, the name ot (Sioux (lor which there seems to be no acknowledged meaning) having been given to them uv uirj early jeauit missionaries. They designate tbe month of January as the hard moon premium, 'eoruary, tne moon tn which the racoon run; 11H discounL I March, the moon of sore eye; April, the moon premium. They are kind to their sick, but take more care ot their youth than they do of their old men. They are averse to the custom of bleeding, and aeldom draw blood except in severe case of illness. Their medicine are chiefly composed of root and plant, ana tney never male use ot metallic medicines.

They are partial to vapor bath, and resort to them for tbe cure of many disease. Their bodily sick nea they frequently attribute to the displeasure of tome animal which they have hunted with difficulty and slain. The Sioux Indian consider it lawful to take the life of a fellow being by way of revenge, but a great crime to take fiife under any other circumstance. They invariably have a great fear of the spirits of the dead, whom they think have the power of injuring the living, and it thought that this fear is what prevent them from committing murder more frequently than they do. The practice of tying ia considered aa exceedingly wrong.

They believe In a Great Spirit but have no deli nfte idea of hi attribute. Whenever any calamity happen to them they allege that the Great Spirit! angry ana so, wnen tney receive a Dieaaing. they acknowledge it as corninir from the same being. They look upon the death of a human being at a manifestation of Divine displeasure. They retort at time to sacrifices, and case have been known where 8ioux father have acrificed their children to appease the anger of the Great Spirit.

They are much afraid of creature which they look unon a a kind of vtmpire, and to see this creature la a sure sign of approaching death. They are exceedingly upertitioua in regard to fire, which they consider a gift from the Great Spirit. In former time they obtained It from friction of wood, but at the present time chiefly from the flint. When about to partake of a religioua feast, they remove all the old fire from the lodge.
