We had the pleasure of an interview with him yesterday, which has favorably impressed us with his fitness for the importunt office the duties of which he is about to assume; and convinced na that die tone of general commendation in which be is spoken of, byrtiose who know him best, is but a deserved tribute to merit. The entries for the race -of yesterday were Lizzy Hewitt, by Ivifnhoe; Tom Marshall -a' full brother to th? celebrated John R. Grymes; George Martin, by Garrison's Zingance; and Humming Birdby Industry. The attendance was good. How could it be otherwise, when Nature wore her finest livofy Tom Marshall wa freely backed again the fielJ, but at the start few were bold enough to venture farther than horse for horse. On stripping, Tom and Humming Bird had decidedly the preference as to condition-George appearing rather high and Lizzv much too low.

First had the track, rom wc: ond, George third, and the Bird outs.de. lorn, however, managed to get the start, closely fo lowed bv George. In the back stretch all well runnins almost side by bide. Here he deserted her for the company of Tom Marshall, pushing his importunities at on increased speed, still withoHt effect, to the stand Tom leading past the ttand first, George second, Lizzy third, and the Bird fourth, in 1:52. On entering the back stretch of the last mile, Tom had widened his gap to four lengths. George not being willing to al low too much of a good thing, brushed up to him, getting to within a length. He wiis.here held hard in and trailed him into the last quarter. Once more, in straight work, his jockey pulled him out, and here a Bevere struggle en sued to the draw-gates.

George passed h'uu here. Monk, the rider of Tom, finding he had lost the heat, commenced pulling up George winning easily. Time, 5:40. Second Heat. Humming Bird seemed distressed, George was 44 fine as a fiddler," Tom doing well, and Lizzy appeared right.

The "Kaintucks" were in their glory George had won a bent, and liis game undoubted. Two and three to one on George were current' and quite a 44 pile" wus heaped upon him. Humming Bird sprang off with the lead, having Lizzy on her quarter, and bounded into the back stretch, both determined to 44 do or die" George and Tom running in company, and viewing their efforts in calm sublimity. Lizzy managed in the he mi; run to, take the track from Hummiug Bird, and passed the stnnd first, the others close up, in 1:53. Turning into the back stretch, George wcut to work, au.l as sumed a wailing position in regard to Lizzy.

In the home run George and Lizzy went ut it in earnest George the victor at the stand, in 1:56, Lizzy second, Tom third, and Humming Bird already falling fust in the rear. To in Marshall running hard in hand into the back stretch, here made his decisive stand for the heat At a killing pace he cut down Lizzy, and running to the saddle-girths of George, the two, under the heaviest pres3 of catgut and steel, finished out a punishing heat.
