A gunman robbed the Lakeland Savings Bank of $3,000 in cash yesterday morning and fled on foot, moments after police were called to investigate a reported double murder at Stedwick Village, a lead that turned out to be false.

Authorities will not confirm whether the phone tip claiming two people had been murdered was actually a ruse to divert their attention from the armed robbery at the Route 46 bank about two miles away. But after staking out the Stedwick Drive condo for three hours, police forcibly entered the dwelling and found it empty. The call to police about the alleged shootings came in at 11:15 a.m., authorities said. The bank alarm sounded a few minutes later. "A phone call was received at the (Mount Olive) police station about five minutes before the bank incident," said Ann McDade of the Morris County Prosecutor's Office.

"There did not appear to be any murders or any hostages. But we will not comment on whether it was a diversion." The bank was robbed by a white man who approached a teller and demanded money, gesturing to a handgun he had in the waistband of his blue jeans, authorities said.
