rontchartraln Railroad, spr de, opposite the Passenger Balooa, Mew mbi 66 ly To tbe Haaratr Planters of lentalavxiat. ONE of the most important points at present In tbe manufacture of Sugar, la economy of fuel. It must be obvious to the practical planter that the) true theory of large crops la Plenty of Plant Cane. The) advantarea a boiling by steam in such green cane, are undeniable In quality of soger, but although a saving of fuel Is also ef of tbe ordinary boiler, vet it reouirea much further reduction, both in tbe fuel aad the coat of apparatus to bring the Steam Train Into a neral use. Creep steam is therefore indispensable, and tbla il port ant oojeet can now ne completely attained by the aae of tbe PATENT STEAM GENERATORjunon the principle of the celebrated Cincinnati Strand Fire Engine, now two years In operation.

Tbe Steam Generator posstsse tbe advantages of being all fire surface, and absorbs nine tenths of the beat from tbe fire, and with a proper arrangement for burning tue bagasse, little. If any other fuel, is required to take oa th crop. kaptdlty In the generation ef steam, which Is raised to a pre of one hundred pounds per sqeara inch. In five minutes after lighting tbe nre. Tbe advantage of tne use of bot or surcharged steam in the evaporation of liquids, is well known, and In tbe operation tbe steam I betted to any extent, at pleasure, up to a red beat, without increase of pressure.

Perfect safety from explosion, there not being any large body of water to explode, and hot steam being substituted for nigh pressure. Ecouomy in fuel, water and price of cost. One of these Steam Generators wae erected and put In operation this season on tbe plantation of Col. B. C.

Saturday evening was a gay one at the Bienville Street School. M'me Dubois, the accomplished and amiable principal, gave her "pupils a May party, to which, of course, a number of their friends were invited, and a more joyous, happy affair is seldom witnessed. Knowing as we do, the taste and energy of M'me Dubois, and the anectiouxhich her pupils have for her, we were prepared for a gay and pleasing sight but, as it was, it much surpassed our expectations. The arrangements were made with so much judgment and system, and were carried out with so much tact and unceasing attention, that there was not the slightest provision lacking to make all delighted. To the younger pupils, the lower room was allotted, while the elder ones and their friends enjoyed themselves above.

Mrs. Dubois was everywhere, contributing to the gratification of all, and paying particular at tention to that of the younger portion of her guests. A psBsnks ettier or more tastefull dressed young we are sure no school could furnish and the parents and friends showed how proud thoy felt on the occasion, by the spirit with which they entered into tbe amusements of tbe evening. Of course there was music both above and below, and dancing was kept np till a late hour. The Queen'' of the day was remarkable, even among her handsome peers, for her beauty, and for the elegance of her attire.

Among those present on the occasion were some ot the directors, and Miss Loughery, the worthy principal of the Young Ladies' High School, formerly herself attached to the Bienville Street School. Many young ladies from other schools were likewise present. All were charmed, and will, we are sure, with to see many such May parties, ia which they have our best desires that they may not be disappointed. Vocal oard Instrumental Concert. Capt Webber, of the ship Diadem, which arrived here yesterday from New York, reports that the ship Caspian, Capt Wyman, of Bath, from Boston, with a cargo of ice for this port, went ashore on the Gingerbread Ground, Bahamas, on the 10th inst. He discovered the ship in this situation on the 13th and lay by her for five hours, but could render no 'assistance. Capt.

Wyman stated to Capt Webber that he had thrown overboard about 200 tons of cargo that the ship had bilged and lost her rudder, and that he was waiting for wreckers to save spars, rigging, and would abandon the vessel. There is little room to doubt that she would prove a total loss. The Cas pian bad been ashore forty eight hours, and www a a no wreckers had been near ner wnen me Diadem left The New Laton a. It was an abortion, however, and the dust was not laid. The weather became hard and serene bv the middle of the week, and rain seems among us in our immediate vicinity as an obsolete idea. The trustees of the town of Natchitoches have appointed a committee to inquire Into the expediency and probable expense of bringing a supply of water into the town. The Chronicle says We understand that a survey will soon be made of tbe route from Natchitoches to the spring at Camp Salubrity, a copious and excellent one, and a report will be made to the Hoard. It is proposed, we understand, to build three large reservoirs in town, which. while they will be of the greatest service and convenience to our citizens at all seasons. would be found particularly so in cases of fires.

BALTIMORE CORRESPONDENCE. IsPKCIAL ox! THE FICATU1IX. Baltimore, 'May 12, 1855. During the past week President Pierce made a short visit to our city. He surveyed the various public works, and made some observations with reference to selecting a site for the contemplated new U.

S. Court House and Post Office. From what I ean learn, he is rather favorable to locating the building near Barnum's Hotel probably oa the square, corner of Ninth and Fayette streets, where the First Presbyterian Church new stands. The Merchants' Exchange building, where the Post Office now is, did not seem to be wholly desirable as a site. The President, though enjoying good health, looks haggard and care worn.

At intervals he" droops into a state of absorbing absence, and seems lost to all that is going on around. Something heavy and unsatisfactory broods upon bis mind, causing evident dissatisfaction. He tarried at Barnum's over night, and was visited by quite a large number of friends, perhaps fondlings. He has lost all ambition for being a candidate in the' next campaign. Upon being asked sideways bj a Democratic friend as to what were tbe (chances of Mr.

Wise in Virginia, he shook bis head and remarked, "Those Know Nothings are mighty uncertain don't bet against them." It is now asserted that our yeung townsman, Mr. Jarrett, has abandoned the idea of taking the management of the Metropolitan theatre of New York. TO THE EDITORS OF THG PICA TUNE. Niv oju XARS, Way 19, 1855. Having (just returned from a three years' ex ploriog tour on the Pacific coast, in search of a more genial clime than the Miaaiasippi Valley, the place of my nativity, I have aj laat made my cuoice, ana leeuag anxious to interest as many men as possible to accompany mjrgelf and family to that distant but moat desirable and, I allude to the country upon the borders of Fuget Sound. There axe inducementa offered every department of business. If a man is desfaoes ot embark ing in the lumber business, he can find do auch opportuniea elsewhere.

At present, there are hut five mills on tha Sound, and thely have all been erected within the laat four years. The country is in it infancy; but there is still a heavy business negotiated with the Sandwich Islands, Australia, and China, In which there are some thirty vessel now running regularly with lumber and spars, and those countries bid fair to be the beat markets for these supplies. There is alao a heavy business done ia coal. The mines of Bellingham'a Bay have, within the laat tew months, been aending large quantities to San Francisco. The coal prove to be of good quality it is found in many place on tbe Sound, and also ou the banks of some of the rivers emptying themselves into the Sound.

This, I think, will be one SI the largest business places on the coast There is also Another branch of business that has sprang up within the laat year that ia fishing Tho fishing ground, for abundance and variety, are certainly the finest to be found In the world. AU kinds of shell fish are plentiful The rivers emptying into the Sound are small, and not capable of being navigated for any con iderable distance. The land bordering on the Sound, and east to the Cascade Mountains, is ex tremely fertile, and for the most psrt heavily tim bered. The prairies are small. The aeaaona are so mild that there is ne time of tha yeas at which one doea not see wild flowers in fall bloom.

The American settlements are extremely sparse. Olympia Is the capital It is located at the Southern extremity of the and contain some SOO white inhabitants, and one printing press (Democratic.) The next town of any consequence ia Steilacoom, twenty miles north. (This ia located on the Sound, and is one of the most flourishing villages in the country, containing about one hun dred and fifty white inhabitants anfi one printing ess (Whig.) This will be the principal commsrcial town In the country, as it is the terminus of the military road from Foit Wallia on the east aide of the Cas cade Mountain and as this ia the only pas through the ancmntalna. There must at no distant day be one of the rich est States in the Union formed in the great region between the Rocky and the Cascad Mountain. Fort Piaqualy, belonging to tha Hudson Bay Company, ia aix milea trom Steilacoom.

On account of the unsettled state of the land title of the company, the settlement of that most Jeairable por i uon of the country is much retarded. It is here you may see thousands and thousand of that moat extraordinary and wonderful people called the Flat Head Indiana. I aball be moat happy to give any information in regard to the above named country that may be dealt ed, as I am perfectly familiar with all Its resources. I shall sail from this dty tome time next winter for Steilacoom, W. T.

The Nashville Banner, of Wednesday last, says i The weather continues dry. thongh not without occasional showers. The crops, generally speaking, are doing well The prospect is good for incomparably the largest wheat crop ever raised in this part of the country. Never before was there such a breadth of land put down in wheat, and never before did the yield per sore promise to be any thing like as great aa it does now. We have heard of the appearance, in two or three neighborhoods, ot a wniteanould on the stalks and blades of the plant, which caused it to fall, and which, as far as it prevails, will prove injurious, it not destructive.

We bave also heard that the fly has been seen and is at work in some parts of Robertson count; But as a general, unng, we repeat; there i every prospect of an unprecedented wheat crop. The rye is also nne. a ne oats are not so promising aa iney were wis time last year, but last year's crop was an extraordinary one.
