He served on the Cornell Board of Trustees from 1939-46. Architectural studies for the new engineering building are being made now.

As soon as these are complete, and contracts let, work will begin. The new building will replace temporary diesel labs located on the site since World War II. With these plans for a permanent building on the southeast corner, all four corners of the once open intersection will be occupied. Funds came from Walter S. Carpenter chairman of the board of E. I. duPont deNemours Co. Carpenter is a Cornell engin eering alumnus of the Class of 1910 and a former Cornell trustee.

Tentative site of the building is the southeast corner of Campus Road and Central opposite Olin Hall. The building will be come a part of the new engineer ''jc i ing quadrangle at the south end of the Cornell campus. Amount of the fund was not specified. President Malott of Cornell said it would build the structure and also create an endowment fund for its long-term operation. Addition of the library center will carry Cornell's new engineering quadrangle more than halfway to completion.

Three laboratory classroom buildings are already on the site. 1 Or rfmf im 11 i HIT ti ml linn I i 111 Sigrid O. Farwell Gerald Gordon Richard L. Hanks V. Hardenburg Karin M.

Richard H. Cascio, BS in Ag: "In a day when engineering education needs all the resources it can muster, the provision of a major new facility such as this takes on high significance," he said. "This new building will enable us all the better to perform our fundamental mission of producing imaginative engineers for industry and the national defense." Dean C. Hollister said the modern facility would especially strengthen college resources for forwarding the pioneer undergraduate curriculum. All undergraduate engineering instruction at Cornell has been placed on a five-year basis to enable students to obtain broader preparation than a conventional four-year course permits.

A distinctive feature of the building, Dean Hollister added, will be its specially-designed elements to facilitate graduate and faculty research and study. Plans for the library center have been under study for some time. The tentative site is the corner of Campus Road and Central Avenue, opposite Olin Hall of Chemical Engineering but set well back to preserve a vista. The building is contemplated as a two-story structure, harmonizing architecturally with the other engineering units and incorporating the most modern features of library practice. The stacks will have a capacity of 120,000 volumes.

stock held by Mr. Snyder will go to King Hiram Lodge 784, Masons, of Newfield. Personal effects were willed to William Hall of New-field. The sum of $500 each went to sions of the College of Engineering. As now from its present quarters in Sibley Dome, it will be closely integrated with the central University Library.

In addition to the library section, the structure will have offices for the dean of the college of Engineering and his staff. Thus key central services of the college will be concentrated in one unit on the quadrangle site. Other buildings already on the site include Olin Hall, the Kimball and Thurston materials and materials processing laboratories, and Phillips Hall of electrical engineering, a $1,650,000 structure which will be dedicated Saturday afternoon during alumni reunions. Currently under study are units for aeronautical, civil, and mechanical engineering and foundry and laboratory facilities for metallurgical engineering. Carpenter became chairman of the Du Pont Co.

in 1948 after serving in the presidency for eight years, including the full period of World War II.
