A very promising excitement is alive in regard to the grand concert to be given at St. Patrick's cathedral this evening. There will undoubtedly be a large and fashionable turn out. The affair is got up on an unusually liberal scale, and a surpass-. ingly delightful musical exhibition may be anticipated.

The most accomplished of our amateurs, and the finest professional skill in the city, have been engaged and thoroughly rehearsed together for the occasion, and not a little curiosity is evinced to witness the debut of so large a' choir. Gabici, Wallace and others are amon; the prominent artists who assist, and the Furtt musician in the city is grand leader of the rute rtainmont. iJT A note drawn in the name of the Gas Bank of this city, and signed by its then presi dent, Thomas Barrett, in favor of the Bank of the United States, payable to Mr. Jaudon, and now overdue, was yesterday sold by auction in the St. Louis Exchange, by the sheriff of the District Court.

Its amount was $650,000. It was aet up at $50, and the bidding went on till it was finally knocked down for $7070. A Tax on Gambling. KvrmoMed Position Wronir Route De- miiMii rrum.f?rnMinr the Chihuahna Trail Ih: Wkittnker Misted Arrival of Strange Chase oj uuh falo Considerable of an Excitement, with other mailers. On finally getting through the Cross Timbers, and, as we then thought, the greatest of our troubles, we found before us a gently roll ing prairie in the direction that our guide, Mr Howland, had determined upon taking. So far our courso had been nearly North it was now supposed that we were near the Towish Village, that the bottoms of Red River were close by, and that by keeping a west-northrwest course we should steer clear of the deep giflliea in the immediate vicinity of the above river, and at the same time find plenty of fresh water for our cattle as well as for our own use. The land was of a reddish color, extremely rich, and had every appearance of the soil on Red River; had we kept north until we reached that stream anfl then followed it up, we should not have been compelled to endure the after sufferings that assailed us, and the fate of the expedition would in all probability have been far different. We took a different direction, and here the grand fault waB committed as my readers will find in the sequel.

Although our start was a late one on the 31st July we still made twelve miles on our route. During the day we crossed the trail made the year previous by the Chihuahua traders, who had taken some eighty waggons through from r. point high up on Red River to the former place. They suffered much on the route, being eight monthsj without seeing settlements, five of which they spent in cutting their way through the Cross Timbers and the Red River bottoms in the rainy season. I Indian "sign," in the shape of fresh trails and a recent ut burn" on the prairie, were seen during the day, and on encamping at night no little fear as manifested for Dr.

Whittaker, our surgeon, who was missing. Fires were kindled on the highest points about us, the band was ordered out to play in the vicinity, and the next morning the cannon was fired with the hope that he might hear it but he came not and we started off without him. We iiad hardly gone three miles on the morning of the 1st August before a mean, sneaking, scurvy-looking dog, evidently belonging to Indians, came crouching and whining among us and soon two others of the same species made their appearance. They were poor, miserable curs, half wolf apparently, and their homeless and forlorn looks would have, protected them from the operations of any code of dog laws in Christendom. The cattle und horses had had no water the night previous and all were anxious to arrive at a creek some distance ahead.

The consequence'w as that the com mand became scattered, the advance guard leading off some mile or two ahead. Mr. Navarro had resumed his seat in the carry-all und Fits was still driving when we found ourselves out of sight of either the advance, the long train of wnggouj or the rear guard. We were descending a gentle slope when suddenly a buffalo came dashing by, I closely pursued by an Indian mounted upon a small but beautifully formed; horse, of fine action and ehort but quick and firm stride. He was armed with a lance, dressed in a tight buckskin shirt, and his long black hair, al Whough partially confined by a yellow baud about his head, was floating jauntily in the breeze.

Close by was another Indian, and both were in such hot pursuit of the buffalo that, al though within twenty or thirty yards, they did not appear to notice our Jersey waggon, notwithstanding it must have been a novelty. "Los Inuioe!" said Mr.l Navarro fueling about in the bottom of the carriage for our rifles. Camnnche9!" said Fitzgerald, pummelling and kicking the mules into an ill-asrorted and most unseemly gallop. t'The whole tribe!" said I as I looked out the hind end of the waggon and saw still another Indian' dashing down! the hill with the speed of the wind and, as I then thought, mak ing directly for us. It is no use denying that we were all sud denly taken with a strong fit of the hurry lo get at our rifles and prepare for an attack.

The trail cf the advance was directly ahead, and the btiffulo wiih its pursuers were running parallel Hanging a Jurt. A western lawyer who was endeavoring to clear a notorious gambler from an indictment for keeping a faro table, declared to the jury that If they 'convicted his client they would be bound in law to convict both himself and the judge, as tbey were both "aiding and a betting" af the game when the arrest was made In consequence of this the jury hung, for one- half were in favor of convicting judge and law. yer with Jthe prisoner, but the other half could not agree, as tney would tneretiy have con victed themselves, having been busily engaged at the faro table at the same time.
