I will venture to say that the quantity of pins and needles that has been brought into this territory has not done one-tenth part of the service they wouM if they had been properly taken care of and not wasted. People will hardly stoop down to pick up a needle or a pin, but they will go to the stores and buy them. From the telegraphic dispatches, from Cairo, under date of the 2d in the St. Louis Republican, we gather some items of information not yet mentioned in our columns The Polar Star arrived this forenoon from Memphis. The Carondelet had arrived there from Vickbburg.

All was quiet at Helena when she paeFf d. A nnmber of merchants and cotton buyers, captured at Bolivar, last week, and rescaed by the Federals, had arrived at Memphis. The Confederates had burned large quantities of cotton. Taking the oath still continues there, and large numbers are coming in from the surrounding country for the purpose. Matters were quiet at Jackson and Hun-boldt; also, at Henderson.

No tidings of the fight at Cape Girardeau. Tbe reinforcements from St. Louis arrived there. Fears were felt for the safety of the large quantities of cotton near Fort Pillow, and troops had been sent to protect it. Dispatches in the same paper, from Memphis, July 31, via Cairo, on the 2d, say: It is rumored here that Gen.

Cortis's troops move in a few days. Thus far, no important movement has taken place. The gunboat Carondelet arrived here yesterday, bringing the three persons saved from the steamer SalEe Wood. Nothing later from Vicksbarg. The steamer Minnehaha, bound for that place, did not leave last night She fears batteries between here and Helena, though none are known to be there.

Several gentlemen from Brownsville arrived here last evening. i Every man buying cotton was taken pria-J oner. Among tbem, Mr. French, of Len-maik, Madison county, and Nathan Green-wall, of Memphis. The latter had $30,000 in gold, and other money, in all which was taken.

Cotton was burned to the amount of four hundred bales. Five hundred Federal cavalry came in the same evening, under Major Wallace, and a slight engagement took place on Hatchee and Forked Deer rivers, and a nnmber of Confederate prisoners taken, and ferries and bridges destroyed. The Federals returned to Brownsville. Jackson was at Denmark on Saturday last with 300 of his cavalry. It is reported Villipigne and command is marching on Bolivar.

Jackson used a pontoon bridge, built by ne groes of the residents, to cross Forked Deer river. Heavy cannonading was heard at or near Bolivar on baturday and bunday. On Saturday the telegraph lines were de Stroyed, and portions the Mobile and Ohio railroad torn np near Humboldt. The United titB txoooa wera fortifvioi? Donvax. The Louisville Journal, of the 4th inst says The steamer Com. Perrv. which arrived at this port on Saturday, collapsed a true near the foot of Fifth street, at six o'clock on Saturday evening, by which accident the boat was hred and Turned to the water edge. As may be imagined, the explosion caused great consternation on board, and it was feared that con siderable loss of life would ensue. There were but few paeeengers aboard, however, and but a single casualty ocenrred.

Kobert White, a citizen ol 1'ittebnrg, who had shipped as a fireman at Cincinnati, received euch injuries that be died yesterday at the Chestnut street hospital. A number of the paeeengers jumped overboard, but they all reached tbe shores by their own exertions, or were reecued by those who had congregated upon tbe landing. In this manner, Mr. Henry Kremer, aided by Dr. Kerr, succeeded in saving a lady and her child, who hatfl thrown themselves into tbe water from the guards ot tbe bout.

All that portion of the cargo on deck was destroyed by lire, but fully hfty per cent, of tbe freight, which was in the hold, will bs saved. Tbe boat burned rapidly, and tbe stern settled down in tbe water at the foot of Sixth street.

The Perry was an old boat, and valued at nine thousand dollars. Her ownership is uncertain, as she has changed hands since eite left Pittsburg. She ts partially insure. 1 in Pittfcburg oltices, and there was some insurance opon her cargo iu this city. A Singular Quarrel.

In one of the suburban streets of Boston, a gentleman of enterprise and wealth recently erected a magni-liceut palace, of a grand exterior, and internal adornments rarely equaled, with many features to be proud of, and among the rest a cupola which commanded a very fine and extensive view. Adjoining his estate was a lot belonging to another wealthy and enterprising citizen, a portion of which naturally belonged to that on wmcn me nouse ot tu siguuy cupola stood. One of the parties waa anxious to buy, and tbe other was desirous to Bell, but they could not come to terms, and each thought the other a little obstinate. Finally, the one who had the vacant lot put an end to all prospects of tnul.i by commencing the erection of a massive edifice, which is now completed, and stands two stories nigher than the adjoining one, completely shutting off the view from the cupola on the most desirable side. The owner of the rival edifice was exceedingly wro when he discovered what his neighbor was up to, but there was no remedy, and he laid low till the structure was completed, inside and out.

Now he has made a contract with parties to rrove hia bonse a couple of feet or so towards the front atreet The operation is to coat him the moderate little sum of 5000, and will leave the adjoining bailding in a bad predicament in front, aa to the view, and in the rear by the removal of a support from ft portion oi ut adjoining wall, which is tuns un. expectedly left standing alone. This is the way the matter stands now, and should the removal take place as contemplated, it is uncertain which party will have the best of it. Exckavge. Kindneti of a Confederate General. We are informed that a Northern lady, who waa engaged teaching music in the family of a wealthy planter, at Mobile, happening to make some remark detrimental to the rebel army. when. Gen. Bragg's army arrived at Mobile from Corinth, under Gens.

Darling and Van Dorn, was subjected to very unpleasant treatment, even from those she considered her friends, and in consequence determined to leave for Kentucky, where she had friends. All ber money, however, was in the hands of her employer, who meanly refused even sufficient to defray her expenses to Louisville. In this strait she concluded to apply for assistance to Gen. Darling, wbo, she was convinced from various reports, waa a humane and liberal- minded man. An interview at once showed that he was kind-hearted and generous.

He declined all security for the money, saying that all he asked waa for the lady to snow kindness, if possible, to any one in trouble. He did it willingly, as. he hoped any one would do by bis wife in lik circumstances. It subsequently appeared that his wife was staving Borne where in New England, having friends in Boston and New Hampshire.

The lady was deeply impressed with the General's kindness and generosity, inasmnch as she knew of cases where all aid had been refused, for only expressing a desire to return North, and the rebel Generals aha had previously seen were anything bat gentlemen.
