Benet's poem opens with the uprising at Harper's Ferry, instigated by the implacable and fanatical abolitionist, John Brown. With a lyric sweep, it touches on the agonizing moments at Bull Run, on the overconfidence of the first Yankee troops, on Lincoln's quiet anxiety and determination, MARTIN WALDRON Denning In Series eu)le Richard Denning, who starred in the "Mr. and Mrs. North" series on television, has been cast in the role of Gov.

Denning, now a resident of Maui in the Hawaiian Islands, also starred as Michael Shayne on television, and appeared with Lucille Ball in the "My Favorite Husband" series. First Choice of Millions! YORK NAME TAPES IRON OR SEW on Lee the "riddle on the black months of the war, and the actions of the Southern aristocracy. Among its high spots are Lincoln's soliloquy on the necessity of saving the Union; the re-creation of Brown at the time he is to die, and the compassion of Lee.

It is an eloquent reminder of a tragic phase of our country's history. Men and women from America's shadowy past are drawn with a poet's perception, clarity and economy. Benet said of "John Brown's "(it) is a long poem dealing with some of the things that happened in our Civil War and how they affected various kinds of Americans, North and South, East and West I do not think of it as being primarily a poem about war itself. What I was trying to do was to show certain realities, legends, ideas, landscapes, ways of living, faces of men that were ours, that did not belong to any other country." The story is told primarily from the viewpoints of Jack It MARION BRASH Ellyat and Clay Wingate, soldiers of the North and South respectively. It is most movingly effective when it outlines briefly their voices in despair over illness, homesickness, cold, and the lack of food.

Their families and backgrounds are woven into the action of the poem, as are their romances. A choral group sings antiphonally the battle and love songs of the period, and simulates the sounds of rushing winds through Georgian woods. Directing "John Brown's Body" will be John Ulmer, a new member of the staff of Cornell's Theater Arts Department. The production is designed by William A. Reznicek.

Four professional actors will appear in the production. They are Marion Brash, Martin Waldron, Meg Foster and David Banov. A chorus of nine will provide musical background. A OOl 7 0OZ. 1.25 1.50 2.00 MDOZ.
