of Centrifagal Including 4,817,300 Gallons of Cen trifugal and 6,176,799 Gallons of Open Kettle. GENERAL REMARKS. The following report, which i the second of the kind published by the Picayune, has been moat carefully prepared, not through personal vLsit to each plantation in the by a lib eral nse of the United States mails and through the courtesy and assistance of the local commission trade. In collating so Tast an amount of information, many interesting details hare been necessarily omitted, and numbers of plantations of lesser note have been passed orer, but their yields hare been in every instaiHM included in the general parish totals. The unwillingness of many planters to have their crops recorded in an unfavorable season has put back the compilation of the crop totals several wee KB, but the present date is still much earlier than the usual time for the publication of such information.

The past season has been one of the most unfavorable experienced in number of years, and that the crop to tals are as large as they are is due rather to the more perfect machinery used, and greater care execised in work ing the crop, than to any other cause. The heavy freeze of last winter, fol lowed by a wet and cold spring, almost destroyed, the stubble crop, and the stand of plant cane obtained was fully 20 per cent, short of what it shpnld have been in an ordinary season. The season opened very late, and July found some of the cane not yet laid by. A very dry June dwarfed the growth of the plant, and the prevalence of unfavorable conditions during tbe entire summer left the crop at the opening of the grinding season extremely short in tonnage, and though rich in saccharine matter, extremely hard and fibrous. The grinding season was all that could be desired dry and cold, and without killing frosts hence, with a light ton-aage to work up, grinding was generally over by Dec 1, although many started late, and by Christmas hardly a mill was turning' in the entire State.

The actual returns were even more disappointing than had been counted on, and those planters were lucky who made expenses. On open kettle places tbe yields were -especially disheartening, and only tbe good prices realized from the sale of molasses saved many from absolute ruin. yield of sugar on centrifugal places where the stand was any way fair was good, tbe extraction being unprecedented large in a number of instances. The yield of molasses, was unusually small, the dryness of tbe cane' and the richness of the juice allowing a much smaller percentage of the by-product than usual. The number of sugar-houses at work was somewhat smaller than last season, the failure of the crops on many places inducing planters to sell their cane, while not a few saved their entire crop for seed.

Several large mills, among the finest in the State, were burned during the year, and many of them are not likely to be rebuilt unless the outlook for sugar culture brightens. Fertilizers have been more generally resorted to than ever before, the. planters realizing that a large tonnage per acre is as important a desideratum as a high extraction of sugar. By examining the tables that follow it will be seen that St. Mary parish produced the largest amount of sugar, but Ascension records the best crops and the smallest percentage of losSjCompared with last year.

In tabulating the returns the average weight of a hogshead of clarified sugar has been estimated at 1350 and the weight of a hogshead of open kettle sugar at 1150 lbs but wherever planters' returns contained both the number of pounds and the number of packages, the planters' figures have been used. prospects for the coming season are as bright as J.he retrospect of the past season is gloomy. The planting period just over has beenunprecedented, and a splendid stand of both plant and stubble is reported from all sections of the State. The acreage has in most cases been' increased, and with the more extensive use of fertilizers, and a camber of improvements in machinery which are contemplated, planters look forward to the best crop since the war, should no untoward event prevent.
