In the face of a great danger it becomes a brave people to be calm as weU as resolute.

We are In the face of a mighty danger, and wa must meet it, with the courage of men who know that they are right, and who are ere oared for every extremity, in preference iotv voluntary submission to their own ml: and degredation. The eorrespondenee between the command- ing officer of. the hostile sejvadroa ta oar waters and th authorities of the city, closed -with the peremptory refusal to accomplish with our own hands the act of abject prostration which is prescribed to us by our eonquer-era. The city will not humble itself by taking down State flag, which flies over the public offices of the city, while it is in our possession. It will do nothing to countenance, th.

belief thatitisaaythiaa; mora or leejhan a city conquered by a foreign enemy 1 that those" whoaoma to tak passcssioa have any otter tVlatKatlinaaaf nnblia aaamlSS.aCquirSd by superiority of foree. The enemy Bay caereis aU the rights of conquest, but among thsm neither the nutherlUes nor the people of Ne Orleans-and we toerude among them the men and women, and ehildren-wm know-inaly permit anything to be done, with their reepecCwbieb, impliedly directly, marks, their recognition of the invading force, as having any title to be her, xcpt that of th saperiorityof arms, whether accidentally or not aton to in a airs. They may be forced, aa people struggling for freedom nave often times before been forced, to themselves, thlr property, institutions and light of self government, crushed under the heels of a military deepotissa, but there is ae extremity which will extort from them act or word by which th world shall taught to believe that they are willing slaves. There are seventy or eighty thousand non-combatants in this city, aad forty thousand women and children. It is impossible for Com.

Farragut, whose nativity is in some part of this iegion, which he threatens to blast as Hyder All did the Carnatic, not to know that it is an utter impossibility to remove one-half of the women and children in five times the pace he offers. lis knows that there are not roads or means of traasportation, or communica tion, ths palmiest time of prosperous peace, to find shelter, roof or food for a fifth part of this mass. lie knows that at the best they would have to find shelter in the open fields, behind the levees, under -such temporary coverings as could be gathered for the houseless. He knows a til I further that the other branch of his threat, impl'ed with horrible significance, that bis guns may be so aimed as to break th levees, includes the menace that he will pour in the floods of the Mississippi, to drown those who may have taken to the woods and the swampa. The menace of the enemy, triumphing his ability to do whatever harm he chooses, is before them in its naked atrocity of meaning.

It bas not terrified them, it will not extort from them a sign of submissiveness to the des-potiem of foree beyond that which Is capable of enforcing, by the laws which might has established for him over right. But while we abide the alternative which he presents to us as the penalty for refusing the ignominy which he exacts, it is but right that we, who knowing its full extent, are prepared to abide it, rather than suMy a righteous cause, by any abject escape from th torrents of Hre from his guns. a If is capable of executing literally, in all its fullness of consequences, the threat with which he seeks to extort the self-degradation of a people, who, believing themselvee resisting an unholy attempt to ruin and enslave them, and can sleep after wards without being laahad nightly by the scorpions of remorse, a la alftad with an insensibility mora than hnmn. Kvarr lost Ufa in that carnival of murder, would be a witness at the bar of human nature, every where, against the maa and his nation, capable of such, atrocities, in the abused name of fraternity and republicanism. Tbeee are the amenities of.

the Union to which we are invited. We wonder whether it can possibly enter into the conception of any man at the North that there ia any man in the South, not utterly Tile, willing to sit down undsr any wrong and outrage, infamous and contented, who would consent to entertain th thought of living in political communion with the race to wiom each means occur aa. fit for the subjugation of an unwilling people to their sway. It may not be worth the while of a people threatened aa we are with Instant and oondign punishment by a triumphant foa, to suggest that there are in this city, and within the reach of his guns, hospitals crowded with sick and wounded victims of this war the removal of an portion; fit whoa within Vie time sped- neu in VVSWSUia aiiaai would be a matter of impossibility. Yet each is the fact.

Aad dees this. veteran offloer of thaUnlted Statot Imagine that he will adT any laurels to his own fame, or honor to the Goveromeni'eifervee, by firing oar crowded fcoepltals I w-. Moreover, this is, emphatically, a city of ebaritabl institations. Thdr is hardly a city in the world that is mor noted for th number of orphan and other asylums than New Oilcans. Almost every street contains one of these, aad they are aU filled to overflowing.

Th genius of Christian under the administration of such angels of. mercy, aa the sainted Sister Begls, wbo departed this life on the very ere of the arrival of tmr cnemT. and others, whose lives are de- oted to th care of th unfortunate and the defenceless, may truly be said to have found in this city a field for tne exercise oi ner sublimeet ministrations. Is it upon institations like these that a repreasnUtiT of the Bepublic that boasts itself the freest ana most enlightened among the nations of the earth, can seriously utter such a menace aa that which ia implied in the letter of Commodore Farragut Ia view of all these momentous oonsidera-tions, it hardly to be imagined that there can be any personal motive on th part of th naval commander who now lies, with a powerful fleet, before our city, to liastalTand precipitate that event which, from present appearance is destined to occur at no distant date. If New Orleans is to be occupied by a sac-eeesful invader, there need not be a dispute between the military offloer who is hereafter to take the command and ths subordinate to whom has been entrusted the duty of taking the initiatiTe in our subjection.

Barely, those laurels which are stained with snchadisgrae as most attach to the discharge of such a ser-rice, must prove bnt a sorry compensation to him who will ever have upon his soul the re-membrane and the reproach ef a deed so inhuman and ao unnatural. From another eon roe we learn that at the latest data the forts were ia excellent condition aad abundantly supplied with eaununitlon and provisions. The News Boy also haa the following, un der the head of Inconsiderate Destruction." There waa much lea and destruction ef property on Thursday ninht and Friday which waa utterly on- neceasaiy and oncauea rar.

There could have been no apparent reason for its destruction. Not only this, bat Mr. Thayer asked lor time to roll It out, but this waa denied to him.

We Jgapo to hear of no more eoch folly. Gen. LoveU. We understand, expressly disavows having ordered or sanctioned these acts. From the Bee of yesterday we extract th following tOa Saturday it was generally believed that Forta Jackson aad St.

Philp bad been captured, while the rumor prevailed that Gen. Dane an waa killed. We are happy to learn that these reports are groaadless. A gentleman of veracity who left the neighborhood of the forta on Friday afternoon, about 1 o'clock, assures us that tbey were aafe, and that the vessels of the Federaljquadron 'were not -In eight; He statea likewise tbat tha Loutaiana had not been captured, and tbat the heavy firing of Thursday morning had scarcely inflicted any injury on her, one immense 11-inch shot alone having broken off a part of her iron casing. With respect to Gen.

Duncan, be la uninjured, and writea that the damage received by the fort during the terrible bombardment of the mortar boata, and the fight with the enemy'a fleet, have been repaired and that he ia prepared, aa heretofore, to defend hia position to the last. In th leader of th same paper, the editors say Tbe intelligence foun the forts, referred to elae-wbese, diffused eonetderable satisfaction among oar oitlaeae. It ia somewhat comforting, to know that, ia the midst of ear diss star, tbe sola defences of the river have not yet been destroyed, or materially daaoaged, and, above all, tbat tbe heroic commander haa eeoaped without injury. From all aocounta the forta fought the enemy with the utmost desperation, and the proof of the determined eoorage aad oonstancy of their garrison is that, while they were passed, they have not been redaoed. We would now renewedly call attention to the very judicious recommendations and orders of th Mayor, the Prevoet Marshals and the Committee of Public Safety, the first and most important of which is that enjoining oa all keepers of grocery stores, and other establishments where provisions are sold, immediately to open their respective places of business, and not foree the authorities to measures they would wish to avoid.

It is also recommended that the ordinary currency continue to be received. It is as good now as it ever haa been, and there is no good reason to reject it. Those who refuse it must shars the evils aad inconveniences thsy thus participate in inflicting on the community. It la hoped that a spirit of accommodation will now be evinced by all persona. Those indi-Tiduals who hold Confederate money aad wish to part with it, can have It exchanged for city bills, by applying to the Committee of Public Safety.

It will be seen that the Mayor, in conjunction with the Committee of Public Safety, is taking measures to provki for th distribution of a supply of prorlasons through th Free Markat, where there will be a sufficient quantity of provisions acoeesibl to the public. In the xaeaaiime, the people are requested to maintain a proper calmness, and to rely on tha di-position and the efforts of th authorities and th oommittea to do everything practicable for their relief. Ic connection with this welcome announcement we would call attention to that, in another column, of Thomas Murray, ths Trvmsuser of the Free Market Committee, to th afleet that tha market will be open as usual Vhis gaornlng 4 The General commanding the European ni.4a which haa been contrrbuunir eo materially to th preservation of order and qdlet in oar city, for several days past, has, by jth request ef the Major, assumed the command of all the foreign troop in the city, ind calls on aO good oitixetw to give what aid and asei stance they can to preeer order and traaqaUlity in the city, and tney are request tO polat HI OECB OX aueir respevUY aiseroa, immamaiiT to uiaee aewra oar faMaiyotBJadthePrqv that il aitiaan at home by nine O'clock In I aejiar uraaaa-rannn aiewt. the- aventoa- and that ladles and childrao retbaht within doors daring the day as well as the evenings All theee- are exoelientreoom- tve veanAfttaul and Eareciallv aheuld the leTce. and the streets Immediately s4JaoeepTaleaf' of the crowds of men, wouVd and Which bay tarried titer a- oaataatly for the last four days.

Besides tha disorders it induces, and the peril to life, It is unworthy of that calm self-respect which we BboaUobaerv, in our present unhappy position. Let ns sot make a show of ourselves, and a noisy parade of our emotions, for tne gratification of an exultant foe. 1 be Confederate steamer McEae, which, as we have related above, cam up from the forts, bearing our dead and wounded, after, laving discharged the duty assigned her, was about to return yesterday morning, when, in consequene of th injuries received by her, during the bombardment, and which- were plainly visible to every one who saw hsr oa ner arrival, she sank at her anchorage, opposite the dock yard of Mr. Hughes, on the right bank of the river.

All on board her were saved. Yesterday noon, the following communication was brought from the fleet, by Capt. Bailey, and delivered to the Mayor U. 8. Faesacot. Flag Officer Western Gulf Blockading Squadron. In the interview between the Mayor and the Federal naval officers who came with this communication the senior officer took occasion to urge a complaint on the part of Flag Officer Farragut tbat the officer commanding the Confedenafgunboat McRae had violated the flag, of trace and his pledge to return aa he came, by intentionally sinking the McRae. Tbe Federal officer was briefly tniormed ol the actual facts of the case, and given to nnder-stand that the complaint he urged had no foundation. Other eomplaints were advanced, and were promptly met by the Mayor.

There waa an evident desire on the Federal officer's part to find some pretext for harsh sneasnres, but we are confident he failed in that respect. The thinly veiled threat of the Flag Offiser to cut tbe levee with shells was repeated by his messenger, aa if he had an idea that the utterance of it by his superior officer was not eufaeieat to aaake ns afraid. He remarked that the Flag Offloer waa very avsrss to ro sorting to harsh measures, but," Slid he, your Honor must be aware that if we bombard th city th levee will probably be torn by our shells, and, in that case, an enormous loss of human life will be occasioned." There was no need of this repetition. The atrocity of the threat was not likely to escape obeer-Tatlonnt its iteration did not add to the terrorism its anther designed to create; on the contrary, the evident desire to fix attention on it even weaksnsd the effect it might have bad on the few timid persons to be found among us. Ere they hare done with us the enemy will moet assuredly discover that they have to deal with a people here who are not dismayed by threats, however diabolical they may be, and who will -not, oven to escape threatenedaaeti-nction, recede from a position they have deliberately-assumed, and perform an act of humiliation that they have onoe and unalterably declared thsy will not perform.

In concluding the interview the Mayor Informed the senior Federal officer that he would convene the City Council to take it into eon-si deration, and send a reply to Flag Officer Farragut this morning. the same time, he intimated that, although he had no authority to speak for the Council, that body, he was of opinion, would not recede from the position it had ataamed and in which it was sustained by the citizens. Soon afterwards ths City Council met In secret session; and the foreign consuls, who had met forsonsultatioainthe City Hall, held a conference'witn th Council.
