Moorestown at Trenton State College, noon. GIRLS GROUP I Morris Catholic vs. Pitman at Trenton State College, 2 p.m. perennial powers Scotch Plains and Harrison, the quiet but consistent defense, the diving saves by Sean Korman and accurate penalty kicks had brought the Redskins to the state final. That's how Parsippany wanted to end the season, but a late surge by North Brunswick dashed the Redskins' hopes.

With les than 10 minutes to go, Parsippany was ahead 1-0 on a first-half, direct kick goal by Andrew Newman. However, Curt at 16:38 of the first half to give Parsippany its 1-0 edge. The Redskins seemed comfortable going into the half and also looked strong to start the second half, but little by little, North Brunswick, 15-5-2, and players like Norman and Brian Cuddy, made inroads into the Parsippany defense. "They came in fired up a little more," said Stephen Ladas, one of See SOCCER B2 Szegeski and Ted Norman scored goals less than one minute apart to end Parsippany's season as a Group III finalist. "We allowed a couple of costly errors at the end," said Parsippany coach Jack Pruden, whose team finished 16-6-1.

"We just ran out of steam. I'd say we pushed up a little bit too much and we just got caught up. "We just didn't do it at the end of the game. We were fatigued." The sudden turn of events left many of the Parsippany players stunned, especially after a solid first half of play in which Parsippany scored. The early part of the game was tightly contested before the Redskins broke out on top off the direct kick.

The set play had Stephen Ladas run past the ball to distract the five-man North Brunswick wall. Andrew Ladas then passed the ball to Newman. The junior defender hit a low shot into the left corner of the net EWING TWP. The sullen looks of despair and the sad faces of the Parsippany High School boys soccer team more than told the story after the Redskins' 2-1 loss to North Brunswick in the Group III state final at Trenton State College last night. The Parsippany soccer season was not supposed to end this way.

The magical victories against A 4.1 10 weeks later, it's Jefferson vs. Mendham i Jefferson, the SCIL champions, 3 mm A 'SSj- ''JtfttSi If I 1 V. i By Christopher Shaw Daily Record From the outset, most everyone felt there was something special about the football teams at Mendham and Jefferson high schools. Neither has disappointed. There was another feeling, that these two teams were destined to meet this season.

It's almost as if the last nine weeks were a mere formality. Jefferson vs. Mendham. It took 10 weeks, but it's finally here. In a 1 p.m.

kickoff today at Mendham High School, the 8-0 Minutemen, ranked third in the area and the second seed, will host 9-0 and No. 1 Jefferson, the third seed, in a North Jersey Section 2, Group II semifinal. The game will be broadcast by WMTR (1250-AM). There hasn't been an all-Morris County playoff game quite like this in four years. In fact, the last time two Morris clubs with perfect records met in the playoffs was the 1989 North Jersey Section 2, Group III final between Randolph and Morris Hills.

Featured today will be two well-balanced football teams, each without a glaring weakness. led its league in team offense (32 points per game) and team defense (5 points allowed). Mendham, the owner of a current 15-game winning streak, will meet undefeated West Morris next Saturday to determine the IHC-Hills Division championship. The Minutemen feature the area's highest-scoring offense, averaging 38 points per game. Their defense is equally strong, allowing just 6 points per game.

While each has posted impressive numbers as a team, both feature some outstanding individual talent. In fact, four of the area's leading scorers will be playing today in Jefferson senior running back Mike Barnish (14 touchdowns), Jefferson junior wide receiver Mike Leach (13) and Mendham's senior running back tandem of Steve lorio (13) and Shep Sepaniak (13). Jefferson junior quarterback Keith Johnson has posted the most eye-catching numbers of all. The 5-foot-ll, 175-pound Johnson has tossed 18 touchdowns and just two interceptions in his second year as the Falcons' starter. Johnson High School in Clark, he never came close to the nine-catch, 146-yard, four-touchdown performance of last week's 41-24 victory over Up-sala. Doran, who finished the season with 28 catches for 349 yards and six touchdowns, knows that the pressure is on him, and that he is being asked for one more big game. "The plays aren't any different, and I'm looking for another big week," said Doran. "They (Wesley) will have to pay more attention to me with Vic out, and I have to step up in his place.

We've changed some of the routes for me that were designed for Vic, but we'll try to hit them (Wesley) with the same stuff that we hit Upsala with last week." FDU-Madison coach Bill Klika said Doran and Tom Chesnovich can step up and make up for the loss of Moncato. "It was important that the kids stepped up Friday night after Vic went down," said Klika. "Right now, Frankie has confidence in his receivers to make the big catch. The big part is that we know that we have more than one weapon, and that we are not a See FDU B3 points this season: "Maybe we need to get their a half-hour early and score twice." Realistically, all is not that bad for the Golden Eagles, 6-2, the No. 8 team in the area and the third seed in the section.

West Morris, 8-0, ranked sixth in the area and the second seed, is indeed a formidable opponent, but "If we really max out, we like to think it will be a close game," Regan said. "We're going to have to win or at least stay even in the turnover battle. It could happen. We could pull it out. Who knows?" Today's meeting will mark the first time these old rivals have played since they were members of the Iron Area Conference in the 1970s.

It also is a preview of things to come since next year West Morris will move out of the IHC-Hills Division and into the Iron Division next year where it will join Morris Knolls. While it's been a couple of decades since they last played, not much has changed along the sidelines and in the gameplans for both clubs. West Morris, under the venerable Pete Piccirillo, remains a Wing-T team based on discipline and fundamentals. The flu bug clearly had taken its toll on the veteran Morris Knolls coach. However, the real reason Regan was having trouble sleeping had nothing to do with a virus. His pain can be spelled out in two words West Morris. Morris Knolls will visit West Morris 1 p.m. today in the semifinals of the North Jersey Section 2 Group III playoffs.

Either Regan is in the midst of one of the greatest Lou Holtz impersonations of all time, or the Golden Eagles may be in for a long afternoon. Consider these pearls Regan uttered: On how practice has been for Morris Knolls this week: "There's been some good, some bad. We're kind of tired. We're not very sure what we have left." On West Morris: "They've done a great job of maxing out their potential and making the most out of their talent. As Pete (Piccrillo) would say, 'The strength of the wolf is in the They're really a unit." On how the Golden Eagles will counter a West Morris defense which has allowed just 36 MADISON FDU-Madison quarterback Frank Plefka dropped back in practice Thursday and rifled a pass to wide receiver Jake Doran.

A few minutes later, Doran stood next to Vic Moncato, the man he will be replacing in the lineup today when FDU-Madison hosts Wesley College of Dover, in the ECAC Southeast Championship, beginning at noon. FDU-Madison (8-2) comes into today's contest against Wesley (6-3-1) having won its last four games by a combined score of 125-58. But the Jersey Devils will play their first playoff game in school history without Moncato, the team's top receiver, scorer, punt returner and punter. Moncato is expected to miss the game with an injury to his right knee that occurred last Friday against Up-sala, following a 41-yard touchdown reception. Just like Jeff Hostetler replacing Phil Simms, Doran is being asked to step into the big shoes of Moncato, who this week was named the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom League's Player of the Year.
