The Shift to 12 Channels Is Under Way who are now receiving 12- channel service from Ceracche TV Cable Service. Ceracche's men have been busy during the recent run of good weather installing the new, heavier, aluminum-coated cable on telephone poles, Sand so far have reached nearly half of the cable service subscribers in the city. For the rest, 12-channel service should be By RANDALL SHEW If you flicked your television dial in Ithaca during the past few weeks, and discovered a picture at every stop around the circle, it doesn't mean your set has developed sudden powers you didn't know it had. Your set is fine. In fact, everything's fine.

You just hap, pen to be one of the nearly 2,000 homeowners in the city to know only, "What do I get on my set?" In short, he gets a lot more than he's getting now, and if he's a complete TV-nut, he'd better build a combination kitchen-dining room-living room-bedroom room, and put the TV set there. With that setup, he can watch the big glass around the clock, or for as many of the 24 hours as he can stay awake. It has not been without problems. The cable required is heavier, necessitating a complete change of existing feeder lines. The "signal drop" between amplifiers is much greater on Channels 7 through 13 than it is on Channels 2 through 6, the ones involved in five-channel service.

Dr. Ian Mac-Duff (guest star Donald Barron), who expected nothing and scoffed at everything, winds up 1 r- el: completed by the middle of 1965. Outside the city, the changeover will start after that.

Anthony Ceracche, proprietor of the system, said he would like to be able to tell everyone when the 12 channels will come their way, but there is no fixed, area-by-area schedule. What his crews are doing is hooking up the most densely populated sections first, then branching out from the main lines to the feeder lines later. To the subscriber, the changeover means that he can see (normally) every scheduled network program on at least one of the channels. There will be more than one channel on each major network. It also provides a completely new local service, a weather and time channel, on Cable Channel 12.

The weather recording instruments, which are scanned by a revolving camera, are located on the second floor of Ceracche's Television Shop on W. State St. The readings of wind velocity and direction, temperature, humidity, rainfall, and Western Union time, are on the air 24 hours a day, and are downtown Ithaca readings. As background for this picture, the channel carries WEIV-FM radio signal. Eventually, Ceracche hopes to make some changes from the cable setup noted in the adjoining chart of cable channels and originating stations.

He plans to put the weather, Ithaca College television and educational ele 1 sion for the schools on Cable Channel 2, moving WNBF-TV, Channel 12, to Cable Channel 12. Also, in addition to WPIX in New York, the only independent station now on the cable, he hopes to add signals from two other New York City independents, Channel 5 and 9, to the cable system, replacing network affiliates which broadcast mostly duplicating programs. The microwave relay station that brings in the New York City and Scranton stations continues to be located atop Connecticut Hill in Newfield. The relay station that picks up the other channels on aerials atop a pole structure pictured on Page A-1 of this Showtime, is located on Snyder Hill east of Ithaca. This site was found to offer the best line-of-sight reception of Syracuse, Binghamton and Rochester channels, sighting down the valleys around Ithaca.

An added bonus for 12-channel subscribers will be six FM channels radio, including FM-stereo where a stereo-phonic signal is broadcast on one FM channel. One of the biggest things subscribers will notice right away with 12-channel service is that the selection of late night and weekend movies is greatly expanded with all the new stations, since most movies are station originated rather than network-originated. Ceracche has been working on this 12 channel service for nearly two years now. As far as he knows, his is the only community cable system in the nation now offering this number of channels. 23, Milt Kamen will put on an armored vest, lock his apartment door, and turn out the lights. Outside, the tall, angular comedian with the sharp nose and sharp sense of humor knows that a school of sharks the Hollywood species will be waiting. Their mission: To devour Kamen, who for the past several months has delighted in roasting i colleagues in scathing reviews on NBC-TV's Tonight Show, and in night clubs throughout the country. Although he has never imagined himself as a critic, his off-the-cuff capsule observations on the contemporary scene have all too often hit their mark. In free, colloquial words he has been known to summarize a multimillion dollar Egyptian saga as "a pile of sand" and describe muscular Herculian film heroes as boy scouts.

Monday, those he has taken pot shots at will have their turn. On that day, Kamen is makinb his debut as a serious, dramatic actor in an episode on ABC-TV's "Ben Casey" (10 to 11 p.m.). "But nobody seems to be worried about this except me," the comedian said the other day, obviously still shaken by the experience of filming the drama.

"Can you imagine starting out a new segment of your career playing opposite Shelley Winters?" he asked. "From the first day on the set, you knew she and not you was going to win an emmy." Kamen then almost went into one of his quick reviews of the episode, but held himself back. Ile doesn't want to add any fuel to the fire. Although he doesn't have any idea how "The Desire of the Heart, etc." will be received, the comedian is pleased that he has had an opportunity to show another face. "Unless you're a Jackie Gleason or Phil Silvers, a comedian just doesn't have much opportunity to work on television unless he can switch to the serious stuff," he added.

"Oh you can keep busy with those panel shows, but you're at the mercy of the moderator. If he doesn't laugh at your line, you're dead. You sit there with egg on your face, hoping he will start the game soon." And after "Ben Casey" he is hoping the eggs won't be rotten. 4 ri)?
