It is rated Ga II persons admitted. It's no secret that "A New Leaf," the first picture written and directed by Elaine May, in which she co-stars with Walter Matthau. has had its problems. Miss May turned in an over-length movie which has been edited against her wishes and she has been screaming loudly and clearly. But I was more than pleasantly surprised.

Her aborted, subverted picture may not be the harrowing black comedy she intended, but it is a very funny. witty gray comedy and it's a wonderful showcase for her special talents and those of Matthau. There is a beautiful chemistry between them and a whole set of good bits and pieces by such New York actors as William Redfield. George Rose, Renee Taylor, James Coco. Jack Weston and Doris Roberts.

Miss May is talking about money in "A New Leaf," which she has based on a story by Jack Ritchie called "The Green Heart." She is talking about money and the greed it engenders in everybody's heart to possess it. Everybody in the picture itches to get his hands on it except her and she is the one who possesses it and it means nothing to her. She plays Henrietta. daughter of a tycoon, who lives in a mansion attended by an army of servants all of whom are crooks, who fleece her and share the take with her lawyer. She, a twitchy innocent who teaches botany at the university, is.

of course, the quintessential Elaine May. She cannot MONDAY TO DO Television 9-10 (NBC) The Bob Hope Special, with Sammy Davis Lee Marvin, Shirley Jones and boxer Joe Frazier. Ch. 3, 8, 40. 9-10 (NET) Realities, "Play 1970 world series film is featured on show heralding coming season.

keep her glasses on her nose. she cannot hold a cup of tea in her hands, she is a mess who can do nothing right. Now enter Henry. iMatthau. an aging playboy who has gone through his fortune and who must now lay his slimy hands on another one.

lie is icy, calculating, meticulous and the quintessential Matthau. One day. when spying Henrietta twitching and shaking at a cocktail party. there he is. He courts her as cynically as Richard lit ever courted Anne and soon they are married.

He takes over her fortune and now he is free to kill her for it. But he quickly learns of her unbeknownst captivity by her lawyer and servants and in the original version. he killed the lawyer and one other character who is now completely of the picture, thereby leaving the field free for himself. It is understandable why Miss May is unhappy. The excisions have robbed the picture of a certain sting and bit but it still may be appreciated for the individual bits.

shticks and routines Matthau. Miss May and all the others do by themselves and in concert. To watch Matthau aid Miss May in getting her arms and head in the proper position to wear a Greek tunic, is worth the price of admission alone; If some of the venom in Miss May's dream is gone, there is plenty of acid left and she is a joy as Henrietta and Matthau. no less so as Henry. hope Special Set Sammy Davis Lee Marvin and Shirley Jones will be guests on "The Bob Hope Special" Monday (9-10 p.m.
