Dale Garlick's emotions were pulling him in several directions following Rox-bury's 3-2 victory over Middle-town North for the Group IV softball title yesterday. The Gaels' coach was happy then sad.

Ecstatic, then melancholy. Roxbury 3 Middletown North 2 He was immensely enjoying Roxbury's first state championship, but realizing it would be his last. "I'm giving up coaching softball and serving as an assistant basketball coach, so this is all bittersweet," said Garlick, who headed the Gaels' softball program for only three years. "Coaching is in my blood, but to be home with my kids is a priority. "I have a tight relationship with I this group of seniors.

I've had them since they were freshmen. To see them go out like this after See GAELS B4 celebrated on the field after it was over. "I feel a little bit of sadness," he said, "because the seniors are going to move on." After two innings, Wilson and the Wildcats were feeling a little uneasy for another reason their first deficit of the year, according to Wilson. The show finally came to a close yesterday. Same old ending: the Wildcats won their 29th straight game, capturing their third state By Joe Hofmann Daily Record EWING TWP. The curtain came down on the stage with a Toni Fortunato fastball resulting in a fly out that landed in Weezy Calderone's glove. "That," Whippany Park coach Tom Wilson said, "was appropriate." Fortunato and Calderone two of the biggest stars in this four- I or two days, the College Football Association has been meeting here in Dallas and we have heard little to do with the game that is played on the field.

In fact, if you didn't know better, it would be easy to mistake this gathering for a seminar of sociologists, or economists. All this talk about certification programs, gender equity and economic models is as complex and confusing as watching a football game for the first time. But there is a frightening message here that must be heard: College athletics, not just football, are in trouble. Big financial trouble. G.

James Francis, a faculty representative at Colorado State, provided these unsettling statistics: From 1988-92, 731 varsity sports were discontinued at colleges across the country. Last year alone, 209 varsity programs bit the dust. You had better sit. At this rate, the day may come when there won't be college athletics. Who cares? There are some who would say, "So what? Who cares if my college doesn't have a fencing team, or a gymnastic team, or basketball team?" I care.

And so should you. This might sound naive, but I believe we have varsity athletic programs not so the basketball team can go to the Final Four or the football team can to the Orange Bowl, although those are exciting experiences. We have sports because it helps our young people mature physically and emotionally, "Sports is fundamental to education," said Michael Williams, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Education. "It creates a wide range of opportunities socially and academically and professionally.

And it provides opportunities for personal achievement." Have we forgotten that? If so, then now is the time to refocus and rethink. Because we do need athletic programs and those programs are in need. Penny pinching Athletic departments around the country are losing money. Joe Dean, the athletic director at LSU, delivered a fiery speech that implored athletic directors to become, "real financial managers." Dean said he goes through LSU's athletic offices at the end of the day turning off lights. He cut off his tennis coach's telephone because the coach was over budget Penny pinching.

Many collegiate athletic departments have been reduced to penny pinching in order to keep the ship afloat. When that doesn't work, they cut sports. They cut opportunity. They kill dreams. See ROBBINS B9 1 Due.

Dual OVER YE Mets lose 4th in a row Avery pitches Braves to another victory Group I softball title in four years with a soggy 5-2 victory over stubborn Woodbury at Trenton State College yesterday. The victory ended an amazing run by a senior class that began in the spring of 1989 and closed with an astounding 110-2 record. Fortunato capped her brilliant 79-1 career by working her way out of trouble several times and finishing with a four-hitter. Calderone singled twice, Avery gave up an unearned run in the second on a bases-loaded walk to Vince Coleman, and allowed six hits. He struck out three and walked four and left after Dave Magadan opened the ninth with his third straight hit.

Mark Wohlers got the last three outs. Sanders opened the third inning with a single, stole second and third and scored on Justice's two-out single. Avery drew a four-pitch walk from Cone with two outs in the fourth and Sanders followed with a soft fly that right fielder Bobby Bonilla misjudged for a single. Avery (3-5) gave up six hits in eight-plus innings as the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets 6-1 yesterday for their third consecutive victory.

The Mets again struggled, having scored only two runs during their four-game losing streak. "You've got to be aggressive right from the start," said Avery, who staggered through two messy innings. "The hardest part of the game for me is to go out there in the right frame of mind. It's like I'm just feeling my way through the early innings." Deion Sanders singled four times, 11 1 Craves 6, Mets i stole three bases and scored three runs and Terry Pendleton hit a three-run homer for the Braves. Sanders capped the Braves' romp by dashing home from second base on Ron Gant's infield hit in the eighth inning.

Mark Lemke also had four of Atlanta's 14 hits. David Cone (5-3), who had pitched shutouts in his last two starts, had his scoreless streak stopped at 20 innings when David Justice hit an RBI single in the third. Pendleton's ninth homer, and second in two days, broke a 1-all tie in the fourth. Cone lasted only four innings, giving up seven hits and walking four. IISIV '92 AIR COND.
