Novak." The B. Z. first won her slinky sexpot and "other woman" roles in movies and television. She was a very surprised young lady when singled out to play home economics teacher Marilyn Scott at Jefferson High. "But I've always played the bad guy," she practically gasped when Boris Sagal, co-creator of the series, decided she was just right to play the "sometimes steady" girl friend of "Mr.

Novak." "Audiences forget," Sagal assured her. But Marian didn't forget until MGM started sending her around the country as a goodwill ambassador to meet and address school teachers, who represent a good share of the show's audience. "Wow," Miss Collier says in reflecting on her travels. "I've met some mighty sexy young women who are school teachers. And now I also know why they have such a lively interest in the show.

For the first time teachers are being presented as human beings." Marian's escape from "bad guys" is a delight to her "the role of Miss Scott is closer to me than sexpots" but she still finds it odd to be playkig a school teacher. As a student at Washington High in her home town of East Chicago, not so long ago, Marian remembers: "I was always the girl who forgot to do her homework. Out of five children in our family I was the only one who dndn't go to college. Last year I went hack to see my parents and visited some of my teachers. Wben they asked me to speak at an assembly, I had to laugh.

"As a student I was barred NATIONWIDE 7 rdt Cri 1, 4, :4 from assemblies because I talked too much." From East Chicago, Marian went to New York and became a model. "I was skinny enough," she quips, "because I had malnutrition." After a year the acting lure brought her to Hollywood, where little theater work led to TV, several movies and then Mr. Novak. She was in the original pilot for the series, which turned out to be another surprise for her. As she tells the story: "I was called for an 8 a.m.

location on the day after Christmas. It was cold and I was half asleep while being made up. A man came up to me and said, 'Good I didn't see anything good about it and commented to him about 'the idiot who scheduled an 8 a.m. call the day after Christmas.
