4B SportsClassified The Ithaca Journal Wednesday, January 25, 1995 Hurricanes return to roots Former assistant Davis to take over Junior looks fora senior effort his turn. The pressure is going to be on him, but everything he does is pointed toward success." Davis' first priority will be simple: to save a recruiting class jeopardized by the uncertainty of Miami's coach, ing situation for the last two weeks. The Hurricanes have fewer than 10 commitments with just 10 days left before signing day. Miami has its last on-campus visitations scheduled for this weekend. "As many as a dozen recruits could hinge on Butch," said Art Kehoe, who headed the recruiting efforts while there was no coach in place.

"We've felt all along that it would be either Butch or Gary (Stevens) and we've channeled that to all our recruits." Davis, who said he won't return to Dallas to finish his business there for at least a month, is ready to go. He was one of Miami's strongest recruiters under Johnson and he will be tested in the next week. "We have a great product to sell" Davis said. "This is the best university athletically and academically in the country. I think the thing to stress is that (recruits) are going to be able to accomplish their goals here." as the Cowboys' defensive line coach, also had interviewed for a position with the Los Angeles Raiders.

However, Miami athletic director Paul Dee said Davis, though the last contacted, was the Hurricanes' first choice all along. 1 "We roamed the country to make sure of that and we came back with an excellent understanding of that," ir Dee said. "He is an educator and a winner in all 4k v-- aspects of his life." The biggest concern was that he had never been a head Zfr coach, but Davis convinced the uall'a committee he was ready, a sentiment echoed by former players. "He is the kind of coach you want to play for," said San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ken Norton, who played for Davis in Dallas for five years. "He will motivate you.

He's learned from the best in Jimmy Johnson and Dave Wannstedt. Now, it's i NN 1 I i 1- tk, vA Jo 1), i F. A Nt 0, ii. 4 4104: 's ''''IA ''t 4 1 11- 1 1 4 ti- a 0 1 awo ab.s., f. ti 1 1 414 '1 1 I t4 1 a By EVAN GRANT Gannett Newes Setvice CORAL GABLES, Fla.

The University of Miami considered changing the direction of its football program in its latest search for a coach, but instead returned to its roots Tuesday. Butch Davis, an assistant for five victory-filled seasons under Jimmy Johnson at Miami and most recently the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, was introduced as the 18th head coach in school history. "The five years I spent at Miami were five of the most glorious years that I have spent in coaching," said Davis, 43. "This is a lifelong dream of mine." The hiring of Davis, whose contract reportedly is five years and worth $500,000 to $700,000 a year, ended 12 days of searching to replace Dennis Erickson, who left to take over the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL. Along the way, the university interviewed former Miami assistants Gary Stevens and Sonny Lubick and flirted with Youngstown State coach Jim Tressel, a strict disciplinarian who would have been a major departure from Miami's score and dance reputation. The Hurricanes' search committee didn't contact Davis until Friday, but centered its efforts on him over the weekend. Ranging from sideline to sideline, the San Diego linebacker made 16 tackles in the AFC Championship Game while smashing the Steelers' dreams like the sand-castle stadium in his shoe commercial. That type of play is Junior Seau's imprint on the Chargers, who now step up on the big stage as the latest team trying to end the conference's decade of losses in Super Bowls.

Behind a 6-foot-3, 250-pound linebacker who is playing with only one healthy arm, the 19-point underdog Chargers are faced with halting a San Francisco 49ers offense that seems unstoppable. "One man isn't going to stop the 49ers, but we're going to need a game from Junior like he had last week against Pittsburgh," fellow linebacker David Griggs said. "Nobody plays linebacker like he did in that game. "But the last time we played the 49ers (a 38-15 loss on Dec. 11), Junior didn't have a good game.

He struggled, and he knows it. That will have to change." Seau, a Pro Bowl selection for the fourth time in five years, already is being compared with some of the great linebackers in NFL history. The Super Bowl spotlight will intensify those wmparsions. It's been said he has speed like Lawrence Taylor, ferocity like Dick Butkus, intensity like Jack Lambert, instincts like Mike Singletary. And he just turned 26.

"I would hate to leave out individuals who I liked, but the ones who come to mind are Dick Butkus, Lawrence Taylor, Mike Singletary, Jack Ham and Jack Lambert," Seau said. "My goal is to be part of that elite group when I'm done. The linebacker is the quarterback on defense. To be a leader on a team is special to me." Added Griggs: "He reminds me of Lawrence Taylor in that he rises up in the big games. LT did it for a long time.

I think Junior has the ability to reach that level." Few players can match Seau in the enthusiasm he brings to the game. College: Southern California 1994 statistics: 155 tackles (124 solo, 31 assists), ranked first on team; 5 sacks for 27.5 yards; 3 fumble recoveries. Bobby Beathard said. "That cannot be underestimated." Determination and enthusiasm aside, however, Seau remains at the mercy of a pinched nerve in his left shoulder area. The injury has bothered him on and off since he suffered it making a tackle Nov.

20 against New England. So which Seau will show up for Sunday's Super Bowl? The player who was hindered by the injury and made only four tackles in a 22-21 playoff victory over Miami? The superstar who was seemingly involved in every play in that 17-13 win over Pittsburgh? "My shoulder is something I have to contend with," Seau said. "It will not heal by kickoff, but I will play with the injury. It is a challenge I look forward to it. The Super Bowl is an overwhelming stage for us, so don't want the injury to overshadow what's going on." The challenge becomes much tougher against a 49er offense led by quarterback Steve Young.

"They definitely have a lot of weapons, so you can't key on one player," Seau said. "But if you do key on one player, it has to be Steve Young. He has the ball first, and whoever gets it from him becomes the next threat. "They are going to hit their six-yard passes, but we have to make sure we hold down what they get after the catch. We have to stay within our game and not gamble." He said the arm-pumping, bombastic celebrating that he does after virtually every tackle is a means of internal motivation.

"It's not a show or to put down the other team," Seau said. "That's the way I have to play in order to reach my abilities. I simply will not settle for mediocrity." San Diego defensive coordinator Bill Amsparger, in his 23rd NFL season, refuses to compare Seau to other great linebackers. But he said his intensity and its impact on other defenders give him a special quality. "He enjoys playing the game," he said.

"Without asking for volunteers, if you're working on punt coverage or whatever, he'll just jump in there and do those things." Jackson finally gets to the big one Linebacker can thank Saints for opportunity By SCOTT FERRELL Gannett News Service MIAMI Rickey Jackson spent 13 seasons with the New Orleans Saints. Each season ended with frustration. He never experienced a playoff victory.

Yet Jackson can thank Saints' coach Jim Mora for the linebacker's trip to Super Bowl XXIX. Jackson was a free agent last offseason. After 13 years with the Saints, he was contemplating another season or retiring. That decision was made easier for him. During the course of negotiations, Mora made some disparaging remarks about Jackson.

He said Jackson was too old, past his prime. He said the Saints' future was with younger players. That was all Jackson needed to hear. "He kind of pushed me to go back to playing football," Jackson said. "I was playing golf every day.

I weighed about 260. I wasn't working out much. I was thinking about wall. Jackson played in four playoff games, but the Saints lost them all. In San Francisco, he has already won two with the Super Bowl to go.

"I think we should have gotten there (to the Super Bowl) in New Orleans. We had a good team. We had breaks go against us. We should have beaten Philadelphia. We should have beaten Atlanta and Chicago.

Minnesota was the only team that should have beaten us. "We should have won three playoff games. But the breaks went against us." Frustrating? Yes. But Jackson has a love affair with the city. He still owns a home and a nightclub there.

After playing as a 49er in New Orleans for the first time last November, he kissed the painted fleur-de-lis in the middle of the Superdome field. The remaining fans cheered. "I love New Orleans like I could never love anywhere else," he said. Jackson, though, became lost in the Saints' rebuilding project. Like offensive tackle Stan Brock, who signed with the San Diego Chargers as a free agent the season before, Jackson wasn't in the Saints' plans.

Jackson claims he holds no grudges. But when the time came to sign as a free agent, he took less money up front the NFL minimum $162,000 with the 49ers than sign with the Saints. Nothing personal, Jackson said. He just wanted a chance at a Super Bowl ring. "You know when you come here, you're going to have a chance to play in a Super Bowl.

Money wasn't an issue." He still made plenty of money. He earned $838,000 in bonus money by reaching the Super Bowl. Money, though, doesn't compare to playing in the Super Bowl.
