The program became one of the first in the area to introduce night football in 1949. Freshmen and junior varsity teams also began during that year. Two years later, the experience gained by the underclassmen showed as Roxbury went 6-3 and exploded for 263 points. Roxbury enjoyed moderate success through much of the '50s before, finishing with identical 6-2-1 records under Bob Schiffner in 1958 and 1959.

The latter team won a state championship. In 1964, Schiffner guided Roxbury to a 7-2 mark, which included the program's 200th victory. A year later, Roxbury played Randolph for the first time and came away 33-6 winners. When arch-rivals Roxbury and. Randolph get together on a football field, it's always one of the area's marquee matchups.

For the Gaels, tonight's game will be more of an event, it wilt be the 700th varisty football game in the school's program. Roxbury is 385-281-33 during its glorious history. Roxbury played its first game in 1913 with a student named Frank DeMott as its coach. No won-loss records were kept. The following year, Roxbury suited up only 11 players and finished 1-3 under a coach known today only as Mr.

Wbodhead. In 1914, Roxbury defeated a team called Hercules Power Works, 21-0, on the way to a 2-4-1 season. mfmimmmmmmmmtmmm I allMeMfcieMeiaMBaAiMaieaaaaillNllii -r i Vernon at Jefferson, 1 Jefferson Jefferson Vernon Vernon Jeff i off er son Delbarton at Wayne Valley, 1 Delbarton Delbarton Delbarton Delbarton Delbn i Delbarton Kittatinny at Sparta, 1 Sparta Sparta Kittatinny Sparta Bpa' Sparta Pope John at Lenape Valley, 1 Pope John Pope John Pope John Pope John Pope i Pope John Hopatcong at Wallkill Valley, 1 Hopatcong WallkillVal. Three years later, Roxbury crushed Newton by scores of 48-0 and 52-0 under coach C.H. Col-lison.

In 1917, Roxbury again played without a coach but managed to finish 3-3-2, which included a victory over Dover for the first time. The team played without a coach the following season and posses' Focus Roxbury continued to have success later in the '60s and into the '70s under Toby Barkman, an ex-Gael star running back who had a six-year record of 40-12-1 and guided the team to two Jersey Hills Conference titles and a conference co-championship. Barkman coached the team to back-to-back 8-1 seasons before stepping down in favor of Jim Fiorello, who coached the team from 1973- Continued from B1 27-14. at Kinnelon Vf-rOM 4-0, Kin- 'fi rd ii John Quinn at Roxbury points. They opened the season by blowing a 10-point halftime lead against Hanover Park before losing, 24-22.

They also lost, 21-20, to Summit and, 28-26, to West Essex last week. Hanover Park and West Essex are good possibilities to reach the playoffs, so Parsippany hanging in with both gives some indication as to how close the Redskins are to being a winning team. The Redskins have enough speed with Ikner and receiver Anthony Smith and others to cause a lot of damage tonight. Boonton will counter with its option running attack, led by fullback Tom Haggerty and quarterback Joe Schaffert. But Parsippany has a few more weapons and will earn Licata is another weapon Hanover Park can turn to to go along with quarterback Mike Filippone, running back Jeff Giordano and emerging receiver Kevin Lan-gereis.

Hanover Park's offensive line is giving the elusive Filippone time to throw and the shifty Giordano room to run. Pick: Hanover Park, 26-20. Parsippany at Boonton Records: Parsippany 0-4, Boonton 1-3. Player to watch: Javon Ikner, WR-DB, Parsippany. Analysis: Parsippany has to be one of the best 0-4 teams in North Jersey.

Timothy has rushed for 550 yards over the last three weeks, two of which were Marauders victories. Hills rf went 1-3 as a flu epidemic hurt the squad for much of the year. Roxbury experienced its first long-term taste of success under coach J.B.

Shambaugh from 1920-27. The team finished 27-26-2 during that stretch but managed to win a Class championship in 1926, the school's first title of any kind. Roxbury notched a 12-0 victory over the Chester Boy Scouts in 1922. In 1928, a new coach known as Mr. Mohor guided the team to a 5-2-1 record and the Class championship.

The following season, coach Vinton Rawson led the team to a 3-5-1 record, which included victories over Madison, Newton and Chatham. From 1930-34, Pat Clemens guided the team to a 28-8-5 mark, which included Morris County titles in 1931 and 1933 and a Class championship during Clemens' first year. Clemens owns the distinction of being the only coach to lead the team to an undefeated season in 1934, when Roxbury finished 8-0-2. The team derived the nickname Gaels in 1932 from late Daily Record sportswriter Bill Horner, who, after watching such players as Vincent, John and Fran Reilly and Ed "Hurricane" Higgins, said, "See those Irishmen run." Horner coined the nickname Gaels, taken from the Gaelic tribes in Ireland who were always ready to take on a tough opponent. The label was also a tribute to Clemens.

The team next tasted success in 1941 under coach James Hodgson, who took over a 1-7 squad and guided the squad to a 7-1 mark, which included six shutouts. A year later, Hodgson coached the team to a 5-1-2 record and the program's 100th victory. 1989 and remains the program's winningest coach. Fiorello coached the team to a 100-53-5 record and guided the squad to several outstanding seasons along the way. During Fiorello's first season in 1973, the team registered six shutouts on the way to an 8-1 season.

Roxbury qualified for the state playoffs under the current system for the first time in 1978. The program notched its 300th victory in 1979. The Gaels reached the state playoffs two more times under Fiorello during the '80's. Both teams finished 9-2, with the second one losing in overtime to traditional powerhouse Union in overtime, 17-14. In 1976, Roxbury's long-running Thanksgiving Day rivalry with Hackettstown ended.

Ken Mullen coached Roxbury to a 7-2-1 record and a playoff berth in 1991. In one of the program's most storied games, the Gaels played Randolph to a 6-6 tie against Randolph, ending the Rams' state-record 56-game winning streak. The two wound up meeting in the first round of the playoffs, with Randolph rolling to an easy victory. Last year's squad won its first seven games under coach George Orlando before losing twice to Morris Knolls by scores of 6-0. The playoff game was decided in overtime.

Roxbury finished 8-2 last year and tied for the IHC-Ioon Division championship with Weak Morris, a team Roxbury defeated earlier in the year. So far this year, Roxbury is off to a 3-1 start under new coach John Quinn. One of those wins was a 10-7 overtime victory over West Morris, which has a host of returnees from last year's Section 2, Group III championship squad. i Continued from B1 chip shot found Stupar, who headed it in. Morristown got its goal in the second half when Dave Auerbach set up Jose Alvarado.

The Colonials pushed for the equalizer but were unable to Come up with it. "They stepped up their play in the second half and gave us a tough time," Menadier said. "We brought our forwards back and played defensively, but they still managed to get a couple really good shots off. Morris Hills improved to 8-3-3 while the Colonials fell to 3-11-2. "We thought it would be a lot easier," Menadier added.

"We're definitely relieved to have gotten out of this round." By getting out of the round, Morris Hills earned a date in the quarterfinals Sunday against Morris Catholic. The other quarterfinal matches will feature Chatham at Delbarton, Parsippany at Randolph, and West Morris at Mendham. The latter three matches will begin a 2 p.m. Sunday, while the time for the Morris Catholic-Morris Hills game has yet to be announced. Regular season Chatham piled up a 20-1 advantage in shots and beat Verona, 2-0.
