Coras arlklh) PovosiiGi) mm Eastern Last Minute Aerial Puts 49ers in 4th pplaluma Arijua-Gluunpt Edited by BOB LIPMAN Monday, Dec. 4, 1961 The game was deadlocked 10-10 at the half. The 49ers opened their touchdown attack in the second period when quarterback. John Brodie tossed a 16-yard pass to Monty Stickles. Baltimore knotted the game on Myhra's 32-yard field goal but the visitors went ahead 17-10 on J.

D. Smith's touchdown which capped a 95-yard drive in 20 plays. With 8:13 remaining Myhra booted a 23-yard field goal, closing the gap to 17-13 and setting the stage for Unitas' game-winning pass. Brodie completed 13 passes in 27 attempts for 176 yards. The 49ers used their shotgun offense briefly in the first half and again late in the game.

Blades Rip Seals, 9-2, In Revenge LOS ANGELES GB The Los Angeles Blades broke a scoreless tie in the second period with five goals and went to a 9-2 vie tory over the San Francisco Seals in a Western Hockey League game Sunday night. Blade center Gerry Goyer started the scoring at 1:29 of the second period, Goyer, with assists from Bruce Carmichael and Ralph Keller, picked up the puck at the corner of the cage and shot it past goalie Be v. Bent-ley. San Francisco didn't get its first goal until the final period was eight minutes old. In other league games, Portland shut out Vancouver 3-0 and Seattle edged Spokane 2-1.

BALTIMORE LB Win or lose, the fans of the Baltimore Colts either praise or belittle John Unitas. They did both Sunday but they still said a silent thanks for place-kicker Steve Myhra. For nearly 50 minutes, the 57,000 fans could have killed Unitas. Then he threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Orr for a 20-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. In between, Myhra kicked two field goals and an extra point and kept Baltimore from fading from sight.

Coach Weeb Ewbank summed up the feelings of all. He admitted that Unitas has been wild as a rookie baseball pitcher at times, but "didn't he look good on that one!" FEW PASSES Up until the winning lob, Unitas had thrown only five passes in the second half, completing three for a net gain of one yard. In the first half, while he completed 11 of 21 for a net of 150, none of the completed passes traveled more than 15 yards, and most of the gaining was logged on running by the receptionists. Then after the Colts blew three chances to score touchdowns, and got two field goals instead, Unitas redeemed himself. With two minutes to gotrailing 17-13, the Colts had a third-and-nine situation.

Unitas passed 13 yards to Alex Hawkins. On the next play, he cut loose as Orr raced for the right corner of the field. The ball and Orr arrived at the same time and he juggled it twice before falling into the end zone with the ball tightly clutched. IN FOURTH The loss dropped the 49ers into fourth place and out of the championship race. The Colts moved into third place in the Western Division.

DELIVERY AUTOMATIC VU TRANSMISSION 'Giants' Vie Next Week By MIKE RATHET Associated Press Sports Writer The Green Bay Packers stole their showdown struggle with New York, clinching their second consecutive Western Conference crown in the National Football League and forcing the Giants and Philadelphia Eagles into a two-week test of strength for the Eastern title. Led by Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung, the Packers edged the Giants 20-17 Sunday, wrapping up the Western title with a 10-2 record and leaving New York and the defending league champion Eagles in a tie for the top spot in the Eastern sector with two games remaining.

Both New York and Philadelphia have 9-3 records. STRONG RUNNING The Packers won it as Taylor scored twice on runs of 14 and 3 yards the last the clincher in the fourth quarter and Horn ung brought his league-leading point total to 143 with a pair of field goals and two conversions. Altogether, Taylor ran for 186 yards, a club record. The key play was made by Packers' defensive back Jesse Whittenton, who stole the ball from Alex Webster on the Giants' 30 in the final quarter. The Packers, trailing 17-13, took advantage of the grab, Taylor finally going in for the winning touchdown from the 3.

The Eagles brought their record to 9-3 by blitzing the Pitts-burh Stealers 35-24, and have the advantage of playing at home against the Giants next Sunday in a battle that could determine Green Bay's opponent in the Dec. 31 championship playoff. BROWNS WIN Not to be counted out, however, are the Cleveland Browns, one game back of the leaders with an 8-4 record after beating Dallas 38-17. The Browns meet Chicago next, then close out at New York while the Eagles are at Detroit. The Lions moved into second place in the West, beating the Bears 16-15 while the San Francisco 49ers were losing to Baltimore's Colts 20-17.

St. Louis extended Washington's winless streak to 22 games with a 38-24 win and Minnesota whipped Los Angeles 42-21. EARLY LEAD The Giants built a 17-13 lead at halftime as quarterback Y. A. Tittle plunged a yard for a touchdown.

Bob Gaiters went two for another and Pat Summerall kicked a 41-yard field goal. The Packers scored on Hornung field goals of 23 and 25 yards and a 14-yard ramble by Taylor. Then it settled down to a defensive struggle until Whittendon stole the ball from Webster. The Giants had one more chance, rolling into Packers' territory behind Tittle's passing until Bob Gaiters fumbled on a double reverse and Willie Davis recovered on the Green Bay 27 with two minutes to go. The Packers ran out the clock.

His opponents have been inferior. He is a standup fighter who relies on his strength to overwhelm an opponent. Patterson, trim and fast, has an overwhelming advantage in skill, power and experience. But he hai; been down 11 times in eight title fights. However, all of them have ended in knockouts, He won seven of them, losing to Johansson in the seven-knockdown third round of their first fight June 26, 1959, Oilers Hand San Diego First Loss By HAROLD RATLIFF Associated Press Snorts Writer The mignly George Blanda is getting most of the credit for Houston's American Football League surge that has shot it to the top of the Eastern Division and made it a favorite for the championship.

But what about the coach? Blanda, who put on a great show Sunday in leading the Oilers to a 33-13 victory over hitherto undefeated San Diego, certainly has earned all his encomiums. But this coach, Wally Lemm, must be the most successful one in the world today. Houston hasn't lost a game since he took over Oct. 16 and now the record is seven straight. Gallivanting George passed for four touchdowns, kicked two field goals and converted three times so that accounts for all the Houston points.

"Our line gave Blanda some great protection," remarked Lemm. Houston beat San Diego at its own game. The Chargers, who had won 11 straight and clinched the championship of the Western Division, were noted for their defense, having pilfered 43 for a record, Houston not only passed San Diego goofy but intercepted three San Diego throws. NEED TWO Houston maintained a game lead over Boston in the Eastern Division race and has only to beat New York and Oakland, aj couple of clubs the Oilers al- ready have clouted, to push into: the championship playoff. Boston hung in the race with a 82-24 victory over Denver and New York kept its hope dimly alive when it socked Dallas 28-j 7.

New York is a game and a hall off the Houston pace. Buffalo edged Oakland 26-21 in the other AFL game Sunday but it meant nothing. Both are out of the race for anything except the cellar. Babe Parilli paid for his salary as Boston beat Denver, He threw 51 yards for one touchdown and ran for another to pull the Patriots to victory. Al Dorow did about the same thing for New York in its victory over Dallas.

Art Baker ran for two touchdowns in Buffalo's decision over Oakland. Rolls 213 ern (George Hammond 502) 4-0; Lace House Laundry (Carl Kpping 407) tied and Cleaners (Jim Gambo-nlni 493) 2-2. Olympic Group Opens Session WASHINGTON The U.S. Olympic Association opens its quadrennial meeting today with hopes of streamlining its operations to present a stronger U.S. team in Tokyo in 1964.

Waiting in the wings as the two-day meeting opens is the angry power fight between the amateur AthletiUnion and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The AAU, which wound up its annual convention here Sunday, and the NCAA have by far the two largest blocs of delegates in the Olympic association. Over the weekend, the AAU completed a reshuffling of top! officials. This may smooth the way for a compromise in the feud with the NCAA which cen-1 ters mainly on foreign competi-1 Uon, such as the Olympics. Champ 10 McNeeley TORONTO Ufi Heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson is a prohibitive 10-1 favorite to hand strong and rough Tom McNeeley the first defeat of his brief career in their 15-round title fight tonight at Maple Leaf Gar- dens.

There was every indication of a quick and explosive battle in Canada's first world heavy-! weight championship contest. McNeeley, a 6-2, 200-pound former Michigan State tackle, predicted he would win by a knockout "within six rounds." 'I'm going after him," said McNeeley. "He won't have to go looking for me." FROM THE START 'I think McNeeley might be the kind of a fighter who will gamble and try to take over the fight," said Patterson. "If he does, it could be up and down like the last Ingcmar Johansson fight with nobody giving up. So I'll gamble in the first round if he's willing." Patterson declined to make any predictions, but he said, "I will be 100 percent better than I was in the last fight with Inge-mar last March." In that fight, his third with Johansson, Patterson rallied from two first-round knockdowns and kayoed the husky Swede the sixth.

The Patterson-McNccley title fight will be the second half of a closed-circuit television double-header. The opening bout will match Sonny Liston, the reinstated No. 1 contender from Philadelphia, and stocky Albert Westphal of Hamburg, Germany, in a ten-rounder at Philadel phia's Convention Hall. Spectators at the two arenas will see the other city's fight on four-sided movie screens. The doubleheader also will be shown in about 150 theatres and arenas in the United States and Canada, and may be seen in 150,000 homes via community antenna television systems.

There will be no radio broadcast in the United States. McNeeley may collect about $125,000. Patterson could earn around $300,000. TOP MONEY McNeeley's purse could be more than he has grossed in all 23 of his pro fights in a career of 3 13 years, He has won all of them, 18 by knockouts. He is ranked ninth by Ring but Ls not included in the NBA's top ten.
