HOLLYWOOD 'There was much in his life that was strange and terrible, in his character something outrageous, and his fate not a little that was pathetic." This was Somerset Maugham's portait of the artist as a middle-aged cad. The artist was Charles Strickland of "The Moon and Sixpence," but everyone besides Maugham concedes him to be Paul Gaugin.

Strickland-Gaugin was brought to life by Laurence Olivier on a Jerry Lewis as he appears in the hilarious comedy, "The Sad Sack" at the Calif, for the last showing tonight. Then, when the child hits the large fist quickly with little fingers, the momentum of its hands sufficient to push the fists apart. Strangely, the harder the man tries to hold the fists together, the easier it is for the child to push them apart, (Note to child: be sure that the man does not put the lower thumb up and Also, make sure his arms are straight.) Cr. SoWl Paaturu Cor. TM-worM SUM KavC ALL NIGHT SHOW TONIGHT 90-minute NBC special taped 10 months ago and televised Friday night He again proved he is not only the best English-speaking actor but a fascinating one as well. Olivier was at his best in early portions when he changed from the dullish London stockbroker to the amoral painter of Paris.

He played each character with vast fckill and made the transition con vincing. But even Olivier cbuldn't transform this production of "The Moon and Sixpence" into a major triumps. The fault lies both with Maugham and producer David Susskind. The story was. more a chron icle of a cad than a novel.

The result was a succession of scenes in which the artist uses his family and friends badly. What drama was in the story was largely muffed by the adap tation. The narration which overlapped the scenes told much of the plot so that many important actions took place off screen. The dialogue was talky with much idle philosophizing about art, life and love. Much of it seemed dated: "Women are strange little beasts." and then there was Olivier's remark to his Tahitian bride, "I shall beat you, you know." Her reply: "How else shall I know that thy love is true?" The supporting cast was distin guished but the performances were spotty.

Geraldine Fitzgerald came off best as the abandoned wife, and Denholm Elliott was right as the Maugham-like writer. Hume Cronyn had a miserable role as the fellow artist who be friends Olivier and is betrayed by him. Jessica Tandy had little to do as the wife who deserts Cronyn for Olivier. Judith Anderson was miscast as a chuckling South Sea Mammy. The Greatest Attraction in Petolumo in Last 20 Yean! Boon Open AH Seat $1.

I The Federal Communications Commission has been petitioned this week to authorize Petaluma Radio Station KAFP to increase power to 1000 watts. Manager R. E. (Bob) Thorn' linson speaking for Broadcast Associates operators of the 250 watt station, said that the population development of the Novato area and the additional growth of population in the area bounded by Novato, Sonoma, Santa. Rosa and Jenner requires additional signal He stated that KAFP's peti tion to the FCC was predicattd upon the desires of the station's ownership to provide a substan tially better signal and addi tional programs pertinent to this enlarging area.

Thomlinson quoted Clyde Bond, consulting engineer, and Kenneth Phillips, chief engineer for KAFP, as agreeing that the increase to 1000 watts will pro vide a satisfactory broadcast signal to listeners north of Healdsburg, East to Willows and Pittsburgh, south through Oak land and solidly along the coastal waters. Point Reyes Sta tion and The studio's transmitter and 185 foot tower are familiar land marks at the south Petaluma city limits. Plans indicate the station will remain at its present location, but will purchase a new high fidelity 1000 watt transmitter to supplant the present installation. The station's power increase request was prepared as the result of engineering and legal studies extending over several months. ARC Seeks Blankets for Far East A lightning-fast blanket collection campaign for victims of September's tragic typhoons in Japan and Korea will be launched here Monday by the Petaluma Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The chapter is seeking new and used clean blankets which will be shipped to the Far East for the hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children left destitute by the storms, which were the worst in the histories of both nations. In announcing the campaign today, Fred H. Seaman, chapter said Gen. Alfred M. Gruenther, National Red Cross president, had advised him of the extreme urgency of the need for blankets.

Gen. Gruenther said that with the approach of cold weather, a staggering number of Japanese and Koreans face the prospect of illness and death be cause they lack the means to keep warm. Seaman said, "We sincerely hope the people of this area will help alleviate this des perate situation by contributing blankets to the Red Cross chap ter. No limit has been set on the number of blankets required. Similar campaigns are being carried on by many Red Cross chapters throughout the West Coast.

All blanket contributions should be whole, with no rips, tears, or ragged edges. Any color or size will be acceptable, but no substitute items such as quilts, comforters, or used cloth ing can be accepted. Donors may bring blankets to the Red Cross office, 111 Washington St. An accomplished artist, he has painted the wails of his elemen tary school with bright Walt Dis ney-type murals.
