Initial dealings were lower with fair amount of selling. But buy-tog picked up and numerous favorites had switched into winning territory around the fourth hour. Customers extended commitments despite prospects for an jarjier end to the war now that the Soviets have entered the conflict plus the devastating results of the new atomic bombings of Japan. Although a termination of hostilities sooner than expected would bring industry face to face with postwar unsettlement, this was Jwftened by President Truman's offer of a five-point plan designed to speed reconversion and his recommendation vof lifting of controls as soon as possible.

14 Dryden Annual reunion of school girls, classes 1915-22, at Presbyterian Church. Supper at 6:30 p.m. Petain Backed Vichy Militia Paris CP) Joseph Darnand, once known as the Himmjer of France, testified on the 16th day of the Petain trial today, that the aged marshal reproached him only once. That scolding, Darnand testified, was "in a long letter written when the Americans reached Rennes" in their dash into Brittany for the circling smash to Paris. Darnand said his appointment as secretary general In charge of maintaining order throughout Vichy France came from the Petain government.

A little earlier, Fernand de Bri-non, former Vichy representative to the German occupation forces, testified that "the marshal never believed France owed anything to Britain, but he thought we were indebted to America and often said he would like to bring America and Germany into closer relation." Both Vichy witnesses were called as court witnesses after Prosecutor Andre Mornet told the jury "I consider de Brinon a vile man and Darnand as a murderer." Dar-nand's gestapo-like militia was a scourge of the French underground. 1 Truman to Report On War Situation Washington CP) President Truman reports to the nation tonight on the war situation. His half-hour address over all radio ne-works will begin at 10 o'clock, EWT. When the address first was scheduled lt was expected to be chiefly a report on the Potsdam meeting of the Big Three, with some mention of the new atomic bomb. Now Mr.

Truman is expected to discuss also Russia's declaration of war on Japan. Dartmouth Traek Coach Dies Hanover, N.H. CP) Harry Hill-man, 64, Dartmouth College track coacji, died early today after being stricken 2 days with a heart ailment. Hillman, a member of the physical education department faculty since 1910, developed many intercollegiate and Olympic track champions during his tenure as coach. He also was trainer for the football team.

He wasf a frequent visitor to Ithaca. There are two persons named Smith for every one named Brown in England. Energy Raises Control President Truman seems aware that atomic energy may in time replace power dams, for he said: "The fact that we can release atomic energy ushers in a new era in man's understanding of nature's forces. Atomic energy in the future may supplement the power that now comes from coal, oil and falling water." Which brings up this question: How "cheap would the power be? Cheap enough to compete at all with commercial power plants? This, too, remains to be seen. But do we, if we can control atomic power for essential use, give" it to the rest of the world.

This is not clear from Mr. Truman's words. Publicity Planned He says: "It has never been the habit of scientists of this country or the policy of this government to withhold from the world scientific knowledge. Normally, therefore, everything about the work with atomic energy would be made public. "But under present circumstances it is not Intended to divulge the technical processes of production or all the military applications, pending further examination of possible methods of protecting 'us and the rest of the world from the danger of sudden destruction.

The President seems to be saying there that it may be a long time before this country, Canada, and Great Britain, which worked together on the bomb, will let the rest of the world know its secret. Yet that secret gives the three powers tremendous advantage over any nation in waging war. If the secret were shared world-i thA consequences a. At some iu- me world's nations chose up sides ana went --y they'd have in their hands the river to destroy one another and civilization, too.
