Car Production Outlook Is Dark As Sales Slowed United Press Automotive Editor DETROIT (UP) General Motors and the United 'Auto Workers went into their first weekend meeting today with 'an authority predicting the market for new cars would stay depressed until fall.

The predictions came from Ward's Automotive Reports, a trade statistical agency, which indicated production cutbacks in force were "a prelude to some of the earliest shutdowns for model changeover seen since the pre-1940 period." Ward's said car production during the week just ended jumped 35.8 per cent but production for April was the lowest for that month since 1948. production outlook was anything but. cheering for. AUW negotiators who must attempt to win new wage. demands when high inventories and low sales give manufacturers little reason to worry about strikes.

But if the outlook was botherthem, the union negotiotors gave little indication of the fact. A debate over the cost of pension demands made by the UAW closed a lusty week of public controvery, a. controvery was ended today by renewed agreement on a news blackout on negotiations. Under the blackout, either party must give 24 hours' notice before it can discuss what is going on inside the bargaining room. The original blackout was lifted last Monday when the UAW disclosed it had offered to extend the' present contracts--which expire at the end of this month for three months.

General Motors rejected this offer and countered by calling on the union to accept a two-year. renewal of the present contract. Ford and Chrysler joined in the two-year proposal but the union turned all three of the offers down. Ford, which also agreed to. resume the new blackout, and Chrysler continued negotiations this week and have adjourned for the weekend.
