Daily Record, Morris County, N.J., Tuesday, November 28, 1995 A13 ENTERTAINMENT People De Niro, Dracula head holiday movie parade SAD LETTERS: Ann Landers has heard it all. In mid-October she marked her 40th anniversary of giving advice to the confused, lonely, sad, nutty Possibly the most eagerly awaited family film is starring Robin Williams. It's about a boy who gets sucked into an ancient magical board game. and annoyed. "I've had Pi 4 some letters that are very, very sad.

And hopeless," she says in a profile in The New Yorker this week. She cites the case of a Scorsese's "Casino," a movie about a big-shot gambler and his sleazy sidekick who are caught up in a power struggle in '70s Las Vegas. The film brings back the magic formula of Scorsese, writer Nicholas Pileggi, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, who all did so well with "GoodFellas." Busy De Niro It's a busy season for De Niro, who'll also be seen opposite Al Pacino in "Heat" in another two weeks. Directed by Michael Mann of "Miami Vice" and "Last of the Mohicans" fame, Heat is about a professional thief (De Niro) who has one last big heist to make, and the cop (Pacino) who is determined to stop him. In a lighter vein, the movies' favorite vampire (Eddie Murphy notwithstanding), Dracula, rises again for the holidays in a Mel Brooks comic spoof, "Dracula: Dead and Loving It." This time he's seen in the person of Leslie Nielsen, the comic blunderbuss of all those "Naked Gun" films.

By Michael Janusonis Knight-Ridder Tribune News The upcoming Christmas movie season will be filled with pirates and grumpy old men, Harrison Ford in love and even Dracula. Hollywood usually cooks up a strange holiday stew of murder and mayhem, comedies and violent thrillers, and maybe a cartoon. This year is no exception. The one thing we won't have is a movie about Christmas itself. That's odd because last year we had Tim Allen and Richard Atten-borough as competing Jolly Old Elves in "The Santa Clause" and a remake of "Miracle on 34th Street" respectively (Allen won handily when "Miracle" tanked).

As in past years, the ball actually got rolling a week before Thanksgiving with the release of "Gold-eneye," starring Pierce Brosnan as the latest incarnation of super spy James Bond, a film that United Artists hopes will play well beyond Christmas. The same goes for Martin Landers America's favorite grumpy old men, Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon, are back, too, in "Grumpier Old Men." Ann-Margret, Daryl Hannah and most of the rest of the cast of the surprise 1993 hit "Grumpy Old Men" will be along for the ride as well, although this time they'll be joined by Sophia Loren, who isn't grumpy at all. Also reprising earlier roles are Steve Martin and Diane Keaton in "Father of the Bride, Part II." Martin's father has a mid-life crisis when both his daughter and his wife announce that they're pregnant. Soon he's dyeing his hair to look younger and preparing for the rigors of late-night feedings and potty training. If that's not quite romantic enough, there's "Sabrina," a emerge 25 years later with a string of wild tales and wilder creatures chasing him.

Those creatures wreak havoc in his New Hamp- shire hometown, and it's up to this wild child, played by Williams, to save the town from destruction or risk being exiled back into the game forever. "Jumanji" is based on the book by Chris Van Allsburg. Rounding out the family film roster is Disney's "Tom and Huck," yet another visit to Mark Twain's young heroes Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. Adventure awaits on "Cutthroat Island," the long-delayed Geena Davis pirate movie directed by her husband, Renny Harlin Hard 2," Davis plays the daughter of a pirate who is left only part of a treasure map, but she sets sail to find the fortune anyway, with the help of a slave who helps her steal another portion of the map. Matthew Modine co-stars.

More contemporary thrills will be on view in "Sudden Death," the latest from Jean-Claude Van Damme, which reunites him with his "Timecop" director, Peter Hyams. The film, originally scheduled to open in the fall, was given a prime Christmas-rush spot, which is a good sign. For those looking for something on the serious side, try "Carrington," about the not-quite love affair between passionate painter Dora Carrington and homosexual writer Lytton Strachey in England between the world wars. Emma Thompson and Jonathan Pryce co-star. Also- waiting for men are Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine and Lela Rochon in "Waiting to Exhale," about four African-American women who look to the support from each other to get them through the crises of lovers, jobs and makeovers.

remake of the 1954 Billy Wilder hit that starred Humphrey Bogart, William Holden and a fetching Audrey Hepburn, who cemented her stardom with it. Hepburn floated through the role of a chauffeur's daughter who falls in love with Holden but winds up with his brother, played by Bogart. Harrison Ford has the Bogie role in this update, and Julia Ormond of the Fall," "First has the Cinderella part, with Greg Kinnear as the younger brother. Animation feast Animation will be well represented this Christmas. "Balto," produced by Steven Spielberg's animation house, is based on the true story of an outcast dog who risked his life against overwhelming odds to bring life-saving medicine to the isolated citizens of Nome, Alaska.

Balto was made in the traditional hand-drawn method of animation. Disney has gone a very different route with "Toy Story," which the studio is hoping will pave the way for a new style of animation at the studio. It's the first feature-length, computer-generated animated film released by the studio, although Disney has dabbled in computer imaging for key scenes in its animated films since at least "The Great Mouse Detective" in 1986. Possibly the most eagerly awaited family film of the season, however, is "Jumanji," starring Robin Williams. It's about a boy who gets sucked into an ancient magical board game, only to 'Toy Story' fuels $158M record weekend Weekend woman who lamented that she had never had a date and never expected to because men could not see beyond her wheelchair.

"What do you say to these people?" asks the advice columnist, 77. SOLE MUSIC: Hootie and the Blowfish member Mark Bryan gave his Gibson guitar and his favorite tennis shoes to the Hard Rock Cafe in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Bryan couldn't bear to throw away the sneakers he wore while the Columbia, S.C.-based band rocketed to stardom last summer. Instead of tossing his Converse Chuck Taylors, Bryan showed up Sunday, battered "Chucks" in hand. The shoes are covered with signatures that Bryan collected.

SILENT PARTNER: The British army captain who was Princess Diana's lover won't disclose the contents of more than 100 letters she sent him, the author of a book about their affair said yesterday. James Hewitt said: "I'd never betray her by revealing them. I would have died for Diana," according to an article in The Sun newspaper written by Anna Pasternak, author of "Princess in Love."
