Daily Record, Morris County, N.J., Sunday, June 3, 1990 M))Knri WMppamy Paurk rales Group I Wildcats win 46th straight i 4 By Sandy Seegers Daily Record EWING TWP. The Whippany Park softball team won its second consecutive Group I championship yesterday routinely, almost silently. There was little emotion, no wild celebration after the Wildcats won their 46th successive game, 4-0 over Gloucester City. "Last season was a season," junior shortstop Gretchen Herudek said. "No one expected us to win.

We surprised everyone. This time was a little different. We lost a lot of players. We're young but I think for some reason, more was expected." Sophomore Tqni Fortunato did what has come to be expected of her. Fortunato, a right-hander, pitched a two-hitter, striking out eight.

Carteret, 21-2, was limited to just two hits going into the ninth inning and ended up with six. With the team's top pitcher, Matt Kenney, ineligible to throw because he went seven in Thursday's 4-0 Group II semifinal' win over Lodi, Chris Morgan was called upon to start. The Hornets took a 1-0 lead when Frank Cefalu opened the game with a walk, went to second on Darren Pico's sacrifice and scored on two errors. Seidman Daily Record PRINCETON To say it was a wild one might be an understatement.

After taking a 6-2 lead into the sixth inning, Hanover Park High School went nine innings with Carteret before falling 13-7 in the Group II state baseball championship at Princeton University. The Hornets were done in by giving up 12 walks including six in the sixth which allowed the Ramblers to take the lead, 7-6. The Hornets tied the game 7-7 in the seventh on Doug Sward's one-out, RBI single. "In the seventh I though it was anyone's game," Hornets first baseman Doug Wear said. PHILADELPHIA (AP) Len Dykstra had three hits to move above the .400 mark and scored two runs, and Ken Howell pitched well as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets 5-4 last night to end a five-game losing streak. Dykstra, with five hits and a walk in his last seven plate appearances, is batting .405, tops in the major leagues.

He went 3-for-4 to raise his average from .396. His hitting streak, at 15 games, is the longest of his career. Howell (6-3) allowed three runs, struck out seven and walked three in seven innings-Roger McDowell relieved Howell after a walk to Darryl Strawberry to open the eighth, and recorded his National-League-leading 13th save. Dwight Gooden (3-5) allowed four runs and nine hits in six The Phillies took a 2-0 lead in the first. Dykstra led off with a double and scored -from third two outs later when Ricky Jor- dan singled off Gooden's pitching hand.

Jordan stole second and scored on a single byJohnKruk. The Mets tied the game in the third when Daryl Boston singled, stole second and scored on Strawberry's two-out home run, his eighth of the season. Philadelphia made it 4-2 in the bottom of the inning. Dykstra led off with a single and scored on a double by Tom Herr. Von Hayes singled Herr to third and, after Jordan struck out and Kruk was walked intentionally, Charlie Hayes hit a sacrifice fly.

walks and New York did not take advantage of 11 hits and one walk. Dave Johnson (4-3) won for the second time in eight starts, allowing two runs on eight hits in five innings. Mark Williamson pitched two scoreless innings and Gregg Olson went two shutout innings to remain perfect in 10 save opportunities. Tim Leary (3-6) gave up three runs on nine hits in five innings. He is 0-3 lifetime against Baltimore, yielding 11 earned run in 16 innings.

Baltimore, batting just 200 with the bases loaded this season, broke through in the fifth when Milligan singled for a 3-2 lead. Two singles and a two-out walk brought up Milligan, who had been hitless in three tries with the bases loaded this year. NEW YORK (AP) Randy Milligan broke Baltimore's bases-loaded drought with a two-run single in the fifth inning that sent the Orioles past New York 4-2 last night and gave the Yankees their sixth loss in seven games. The Orioles won minus manager Frank Robinson, who sat out the second of a three-game suspension for abusing an umpire. Coach Johnny Oates filled in.

Baltimore, the poorest hitting team in the majors, and the Yankees, the lowest-scoring team in the American League, spent the game wasting chances. Each team got at least one runner in every inning, except the bottom of the ninth when the Yankees went down in order. But the Orioles did little with 13 hits and five.
