Monday, Sept. 10, 1984 ITHACA JOURNAL 1 1 State Right to Life Party won't nominate presidential candidate TRS-80 SALES LEASING ACCESSORIES ALBANY (AP) New York state's Right to Life Party may be headed for a fatal split because of the party's vote against endorsing Ronald Reagan or anyone else for president, according to some party members. The party voted Saturday night in Albany against nominating anyone for president in the November election. The decision means that the party's ballot line will be blank for president. Reagan already has the SAVE '300 ON A TANDY 2000 COMPUTER Republican line and is expected to be granted the Conservative Party line as well.

Right to Life Party leaders wanted to leave the line open, sending a message that the president's record did not satisfy anti-abortion forces. The vote was about 27,000 to 22,000 in favor of a plan to make no endorsement. The weighted vote was based on the party's 1982 DURING OUR CATALOG INTRODUCTION! Long Island districts voted strongly in favor of the majority position, said William Powderly, a Reagan supporter.

The Right to Life Party needs 50,000 gubernatorial votes in 1986 to officially exist. A Reagan nomination was seen by some upstate activists as a way to bolster the party's strength now. Seneca County Chairman of the Right to Life Party Gail F. Von Wald said Sunday he has made up his mind to resign his position after the November election and leave the party for an as-yet undetermined one. Von Wald said he will seek a new avenue to work for the pro-life effort.

"I'm convinced that although I'm still pro-life the Right to Life Party is not in the best interest of the pro-life cause," said Von Wald, a Church of God minister. Von Wald said that the blank presidential line "is going to cost them the party. I don't think there's going to be a party in two years." "I feel a small core of people on Long Island has dragged this party down to oblivion," Donald Peters, a Reagan supporter from Waterloo, Seneca County, said Sunday. "I think their actions are going to lead to the end of the pro-life party," added Peters, who helped form the party in 1978. The party's chairwoman, Ellen McCormack, and other officials in the party have expressed displeasure with Reagan's record on abortions since he was governor of California.

In 1967, the then-governor signed a bill into law allowing "therapeutic abortions" in cases when the doctor determined the woman's life or health was in danger. Noting that New York's $4.3 billion deficit is five times larger per person than that of California, the state with the second largest deficit, he said New York continues to have the second lowest credit rating in the country behind Michigan because of the deficit's size. Just raising the credit rating thus lowering the interest lenders charge the state could save New York as much as $40 million next year, Regan said. McGovern suggests new 'commandment' BUFFALO AP) There ought to be a Biblical commandment against the Republicans injecting religion into the re-election campaign of President Reagan, according to former U.S. Sen. George McGovern.

McGovern, speaking Sunday to several hundred people attending a building trades picnic at Darien Lake east of Buffalo, said, "We need to add an 11th commandment: Thou shalt not use God as a political football." The 1972 Democratic presidential nominee said that after seeing the GOP Convention on television, "I came to the conclusion that the only way I could get to Heaven is to sign up as a Reagan Republican. "The Reaganites seem to think that you're not really an American unless the state teaches kids to pray the Reagan way. Let me ask you: Who appointed Ronald Reagan to tell us where and when to pray?" Boy, 14, admits starting fatal fire MARION (AP) A 14-year-old adopted boy has told police he sprinkled lantern fuel in his home and lit a fire that killed his mother and seriously burned his father because he was "mad" at the woman, according to authorities. Patrick DeGelleke, a ninth-grader and one of the family's six adopted children, showed no remorse or other emotion at his arraignment on Saturday, where he pleaded innocent to charges of second-degree murder and second-degree arson. DeGelleke was charged as an adult because of the seriousness of the crime, said Wayne County Sheriff Richard Pisciotti, who said the case would be turned over to a grand Jury.

DeGelleke is being held without bail in a juvenile detention center in Monroe County.
