was operating, they succeeded in getting their gun mounted. This was the cannon that has heretofore been able to command the channel from Sewall's Point, and It was to-day bronght around the Eolnt, facing the Rip Raps. After several shots ad been 11 red at the Point, one gnn was fired In return at the Rip Raps, the ball falling; short about fifty yards. It was a good line shot, but her calibre was not sufficient to reach the Rip Baps. Tours, When we beard the shot coming the laborers and most of the soldiers ran and got behind the stone, Ac.

I followed tbe example of ao officer and dodged behind a crane or derrick on the dock, but the second thought convinced me that It was no more protection than a pair of stilts and I therefore got np on to a block to see where the shot would strike, and I assure yon that It was uncomfortably near. Col. Holllday prepared two other guns, and gave" them brisk firing from the Sawyer gnn which drltd them up. Yesterday I met with another adventure. Tbe correspondent of the Herald and tbe subscriber walk up to Camp Hamilton, about a mile, and there procured horses of Col.

Spear, of tho 11th Pennsylvania cavalry, and went on to tbe burned village Hampton and some two miles beyond. Engineer Btlmers, Mr. Short and others joined us. We saw John Tyler's house, a three story brown stone, a little too high and narrow to be In proportion, and yet quite a fine grounds, shrnbery, fences, Ac, around It, which must have been very floe, are entirely destroyed and laid waste. The house is pleasantly located on the bank of Hampton Creek, across from where Hampton war, and near the bank of the river.

It Is now oecnpied by contrabands. Hampton, as you know, was a village made almost entirely of brick, with a Conn House, several churches, Ac, dec, and one of the oldest villages In the country. It must have been a beautiful village, with several thonsand inhabitants, on and near the bank of James River. Now there is one house only left. Everything Is burned up except brick, stones and a few trees.

Many brick walla and chimneys are standirgi but most of them have fallen or been pulled down by the soldiers. That is indeed a sad picture ol war. For about two hundred years It frts been the home ot many, many, happy families. Tear after year, through long times they have met and worshiped in ihe same church, tbey have married and given in marriage, they APRIL 1, 1861 For last evening's Telegraphio dispatches, ee first ptga. Death ot Capt.

Thomai A. Budd. The telemph, yesterday afternoon, brought the sad intelligence of the death of Capt Thomas A. Budd, of this city, commanding' the Penguin. The gunboat which was the bearer of this mournful news, also, brought bis body, which arrived at the Washington Navy Yard yesterday morning.

The telegraph furnishes the most meagre account of the circumstances of his death. He was killed at Mosquito Inlet, which is a. Ml on me east coast ui lurius, uear omj" ua, about sixty miles south of St Augustine. We only know that the landing of our forces was opposed at this point, and that eight of our troops were killed or wounded, among whom was our townsman and Capt Mather. We are without the data for so complete a sketch of the life of Capt Budd, as his career deserves.

He entered the Navy, many years ago, as a Midshipman and remained in the service until he was promot ed to a- Lieutenancy. He was master of Captain Wilkes' Flag Ship in the Southern Exploring Expedition, and was esteemed by that officer as one of the most emoient and active officers engaged in the survey. He was solicited to join the Japan expedition, under Commodore Perry, but before its departure, he resigned his commission and re moved to this city where his family now reside. During the political canvass of 1860, Capt. Budd was at the South, and returned here fully persuaded that war would ensue upon the inauguration of Mr.

Lincoln. He took the deepest interest in the peace meas-ures brought forward in Congress, and occa sionally contributed articles to the Court eron tho importance of an amicable settlement of the impending conflict' He was a staunch democrat and hated abolitionists as cordially as he loved the Union. On the out break of the rebellion he, like thousands of other men of his faith, hasten ed to volunteer for the defence of his coun try and the preservation of the Government. Ha at once repaired to Washington, and was ordered to the command of the Bteamer "Penguin," as a volunteer commander in the Navy. He participated in the bom bardment of Hilton Head, and when the machinery of his vessel had become disabled by a shot from the Fort, he procured a tug to tow the 'Penguin' into that "circle of fire," as it was called, and delivered his broadsides with the same uniformity and precision as though his ship had been in perfect order.

As yet we know nothing of the eiroumstances of his death: but we haz ard nothing in saying that he died as a brave man dies, in the fearless discharge of his duty. A good husband, a kind father, a brave officer, a respected citizen, a most worthy and patriotio man has been offered up on the altar of his country. For the first time, we have tears to shed over the remains of those who have died that the Union might liv3. Buffalo has sent forth her thousands to the battle; she has strewn garlands in the path of departing soldiers, and sent her blessings and her prayers to eheer them on. It will soon be her sad duty to receive with becoming honors the casket whioh just now treasured the undying soul of a noble and self-sacrificing man.

Almost the first Buffalonian to volunteer, he is the first to seal his patriotism with his blood; but we have no right to hope that he will be the last Others whom we love, whose bravery we have, toasted, whose hands we have grasped in parting, whose promotion in the army we have regarded with pride, must fall as Capt. Budd has fallen, and all this that the Constitution bequeathed us by our Fathers may be transmitted to our children unimpaired, and re-consecrated by the best blood of our generation. Oar Correspondent meet with Adventures A. Visit to Hampton Tillage. 0 Correspondence of ths Buffalo Courier Fombibs Monrob, Marcli 87, 1862.

FaiKBD Warren, I am not able to write you sy news, but I am not contraband, am sot a atWBpaper correspondent, rot a military or na val officer, aad therefore I will write about my-sell Laat Sunday, after visiting the Monitor, we went op to see the Union and Lincoln gnus. Ob the road we heard a noiae behind ns, and on looking around aaw fonr horses hitched tandem, coming as though they had been shot ont of the Monitor's guns. -1 did what I eonld to turn their course from Mrs. H. and the rest ot onr party, and then made a grab for the rein of the rear horse, and eaught It They snaked me about ten rode, and the horses ahead being In fall speed, and I holding on to the bit of the out behind, made him very mad.

He reared and plnnged and snorted, and bit me once very hard -with hit fore foot on the calf of mj leg. I stopped them however, and the result is that my leg Is at black as your hat. The horse, belonged to the United States, and I suppose, therefore, that I am entitled to a pension. a On Tuesday we went over to the Sip Haps, (Fort Wool) to experiment with the Greek Fire Shall. To-day I notleed the following, which I cat from the Baltimore American and Commercial Jxfmtinr, from their correspondent here.

I erase one line, which Is doubtful: A Oahbovasim Ddbx. The Sawyer gun at the Blp Baps made some capital shots at 8e wall's Joint this morning. One of Its shells, filled with a new liquid fire, exploded in the midst of their parade gronnd, and, it is believed, did consider able damage. It came down Immediately ahead pf the Hagitait Several other shots were fired, the shells lodging; la the woods and making con jStderable smoke tod Are.
