After 110 years, Joseph Tyrone has a lifetime of rich memories which he vividly recalls.

The staff and other residents of the Merry Heart Nursing Home recently helped him celebrate his 110th birthday. An Italian immigrant, Mr. Tyrone was born on Dec. 29, 1877. He came to America with his family in 1882 as a small child.

Many immigrants remember their trip into New York Harbor gazing upon the Statue of Liberty. Tyrone, however, remembers it a little differently. When he and his family sailed into the harbor the statue hadn't been erected yet. The statue was unveiled and dedicated by President Grover Cleveland and French officials on Oct. 28, 1888.

When asked about the secret of his longevity, he raised his right hand heavenward and said, "The Lord keeps me alive because I was good to my wife." He considers the time spent taking care of her the last three years of her life as "the most important accomplishment of my life." Carolina, his wife of 70 years, died in 1974. Considering himself an ordinary man, he said that hard work, honesty and sincerity were the keys to his good fortune and remain the keys to success for everyone today. His beliefs are deeply rooted in the traditional values of family, faith and friends. He applies his energies, keeping close ties to the church, his daughter, grandchildren and extended family, and to the many friends he has made throughout his life. He worked in the hotel business, becoming a manager for the Bilt-more chain.

Because of this he was able to meet some very rich and MAKE A MENDHAM The Mendham Seniors will meet at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the Garabrant Center on Wilson Street. Newly elected officers for 1988 will be installed. After lunch, a representative of the Morris County Public Library will discuss the many services the library has to offer to the public, especially those of interest to senior citizens. MORRISTOWN The Drop-In Center at the Morristown United Methodist Church on Wednesday will have a talk on "Wills" by Judge Eugene Doyle, surrogate of Morris County.

ROXBURY TWP. The Rox-bury Senior Citizens Club will meet Thursday at the center on Hillside Avenue. Doors open at 10 a.m. The program at 11 a.m. will be followed by lunch and a business meeting.

Those attending should bring a sandwich; coffee, tea and cookies will be served. MADISON The Madison Community House Senior Citizens invite all persons age 60 and over to their meeting at 10 a.m. Jan. 18 at 25 Cook Avenue. Lorraine Hall will show slides of "California, Here We Come." For more information about Madison area senior activities, call 593-3095.

BOONTON TWP. The Boon-ton Township Senior Citizens Club will meet at 2 p.m. Jan. 19 at the municipal building on Powerville Road. Addis Kocher, guest speaker, will discuss "Korea." Plans will be discussed for a trip to the San Francisco Restaurant in April and reservations will be accepted.

All township senior citizens are invited to attend the meeting. Certar Knolls The Moms Center his lifetime YMCA famous personalities who stayed in the hotels were he worked including Enrico Caruso and four U.S. Presidents. Accommodations were more reasonable in those days. The best suite in New York's Biltmore Hotel cost less than $10 a night.

Tyrone was 24 years old when he met Teddy Roosevelt. He described him as a "good looking man." Asked by Roosevelt if he was a Republican, Tyrone told him "Yes, I've been a Republican all my life!" whereupon Roosevelt slapped him on his back and said, "Keep up the good work." After assuring Roosevelt that he planned to remain a Republican, Teddy Roosevelt patted him on the shoulder and uttered one of his most familiar words. He said "Bully!" He also met Woodrow Wilson when he was still president of Princeton University, President Calvin Coolidge who he described as a "quiet man" and President Warren G. Harding when he was still an Ohio state senator. Harding, he said, would come to his hotel every weekend, sometimes with a girl.

Remaining faithful to his promise to Roosevelt, Tyrone is still a registered Republican, a decision he attributes to meeting "very good men with good principles." Tyrone also remembered other things from his past. When he was a youngster, bread cost less than 10 cents, a quart of milk sold for 3 cents and a bottle of wine cost only 15 cents. He also remembered when the New York subway was built. Described as clean, safe and fast, it just cost a nickel to ride. He added, however, that it was just as crowded then as it is today.

There weren't any electric lights then either, he said. Just gas lights, which were dangerous. NOTE HOPATCONG The monthly social for all Hopatcong seniors will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 21 at the Hopatcong Civic Center.

Games and refreshments for all are planned. SOMERVILLE The Somerset County Office on Aging has produced three videotapes of exercise programs for older adults, according to Ruth M. Reader, executive director. The videotapes are available at cost through the Office on Aging. Each 30-minute tape includes chair exercises, standing exercises and line dancing.
