J. mm-mmm Section CZ Daily Record Northwest N.J., Sunday, December 5, 1982 E1 life ij West Morris 9 Sparta win state titles Wolfpack topples Randolph in championship 'hunt 10-6 By ED MILLS Staff Sports Writer RANDOLPH TWP. The hunt was fierce, the hunt was hard, and the hunt was painstakingly time consuming. But in the end the hunt proved fruitful for the West Morris Central High School football team. Yesterday, West Morris, the hunter, finally bagged its quarry in the form of Randolph High School.

The Wolfpack defeated Randolph, 10-6, in the North Jersey Section 2, Group III football championship playoff game before more than 4,000 fans at Randolph High School. West Morris, which lost its first game of the season to Randolph 11-9, finishes at 10-1 after winning 10 in a row. Randolph, the champion of the Iron Hills Conference-Hills Division, also ends its season at 10-1. "We coined a phrase following that loss in the opening ballgame," said West Morris coach Pete Picci-rillo. "We said, 'the hunt is That was in regard to getting another shot at Randolph.

Well, now the hunt is over," added a beaming Piccirillo, a victory cigar firmly implanted in his mouth. It was an appropriately named phrase for the the football team's nickname. (Other West Morris athletic teams are called Highlanders). Following a scoreless first half, West Morris took advantage of a Randolph mistake to cash in early in the third quarter. On a first-and-10 play from the Randolph 30, the Rams Nick Gangemi fumbled with linebacker Mike D'Alonzo recovering for West Morris at the 29-yard line.

Three rushing plays netted netted only seven yards for the Wolfpack, setting up a fourth-and-three at the Randolph 22-yard line. But kicker Rob Goodwin came in and drilled a 39-yard line drive field goal, which just cleared the crossbars. "Once we got out here on the field we forgot about any revenge we might have wanted, and just thought about winning a state sectional championship," said West Morris fullback-linebacker Scott Lakatos. "The offensive and defensive lines were both great; they were the big reason why we won the game." Randolph, which had picked up 76 yards on 20 rushing attempts in the first half, was held to 17 yards on the ground in the second half. West Morris as a team had 138 yards in total offense, including 47 rushing yards in 13 carries by Rob Knowles. An interception by Jim Kapinos gave Randolph the ball at the West Morris 45-yard with about six minutes left in the third quarter.

But the Wolfpack defense stood firm, sacking Randolph quarterback Greg Nardolillo for a four-yard loss on a fourth-and-five play. The Wolfpack, after taking over 1 on downs, then proceeded to march 67 yards in 12 plays for their only touchdown of the game. The key play of the drive was a 23-yard pass 1 completion from Chris Giordano to Fred Bolio on a third-and-15 play from the Randolph 48-yard line with Bolio making a diving catch. A 13-yard pass from Giordano to Keith Jenkins and a nine-yard bull up the middle by Lakatos set up Knowles' one-yard touchdown plunge with 11:18 left in the game. "It would have been easy for our kids to pack it in after West Morris went up 10-0," said Randolph coach John Bauer.

"But they showed their true colors by coming back strong. I'm very proud of the way we played our kids showed a lot of character." With 5:50 left in the game Ran- I dolph took over at its own 34 after a West Morris punt. The Rams went 66 yards in 16 plays for the touchdown, aided by a Wolfpack prevent defense and Nardolillo completing eight of 11 passes for 63 yards on the march. Nardolillo hit Joe Gangemi for the touchdown from seven yards out, but the pass for the two points failed1-, i with 1:53 remaining. Randolph then stunned West i John Fredericks' onside kick was re- covered by the Rams' Pete Frawley and returned 10 yards to the West Morris 47.

But on a third and one -play from the 38 Nardolillo was sacked, and then on fourth and six, Nardolillo's five-yard pass to Nick Gangemi wound up one yard short of the first down with only 33 seconds left in the game. "I felt the longer the game went at 0-0 the better it was for us," Piccirillo said. "We knew that we could wear them down, and that's exactly what happened." Earl was unhappy with his choice of offensive plays, particularly when the Spartans had a chance to put the game away with four minutes left The Spartans stood third-and-inches on the Scarlet 20-yard line, but the following two plays left them just short of the first down. One play that Earl can't be faulted for was a pitchout to Seville. The swift Spartan did everything expected of him with incredible grace, gliding in for two touchdowns in the first half.

On the last play of that second drive no fewer than five Scarlet players touched him, but Seville spun and danced his way through for an 18-yard touchdown carry. Seville also set the Sparta school record for career points, passing 1968's Tom Wright, 276-267. His season scoring total was raised to 152 points, the area's highest, and his 185 yards on 18 carries brought his season rushing total to 1,603 yards. "I was in a daze the whole game," said Seville, who was rapped hard early and suffered disorienting effects throughout. "The whole game I felt knocked out I didn't even remember scoring the second touchdown.

But a splendid last minute defense was the rabbit in Ron Earl's hat yesterday, when his Spartans held on to defeat Ridgefield Park, 21-14, and capture the North Jersey Section 1, Group II title in front of 2,500 fans. It was the third state championship in four seasons for Sparta, the fourth in eight years. "They just kept our defense on the field," said Earl, referring to the second half, in which the Spartans were shutout 'This is the first time this year we've ever given up two touchdowns.

Maybe we weren't in good condition. But we did suck it up and played well at the end there. That's the way we have played all year." "I think we were sitting on our 14 point lead," said Spartan Lou Seville, whose running exploits rewrote Sparta history. "We weren't playing -110 percent like we usually do." The Spartans played better with their backs to the wall, twice forcing Ridgefield Park fumbles after long drives. On the final last-minute surge, superlative pass coverage stymied the Scarlet, who were mired on the Sparta 23-yard line.

Three of four straight passes touched Ridgefield Park hands, twice in the end zone, only to be batted away by the Spartans. Seville was there for both end zone stops, while John Place and George Brook were instrumental on the others. "They gave us fits," admitted Earl. "That kid (quarterback Tom Monaco) can throw the ball, and he has a real nice screen pass. We had decided to sit back and not penetrate (Ridgefield's offense), and trade to their weak side.
