Csonka said he had no knowledge of any investigation and had not been contacted by federal authorities.

A New Orleans television station, WWL, reported Friday that Csonka, 34, and others were being investigated in connection with a marijuana-smuggling operation which allegedly operated between the Louisiana city and Miami. Louis, Montreal, Buffalo, Los Angeles or Philadelphia and most players on the team don't care who the opposition is. "It doesn't matter," said Eddie Johnstone. "We're gonna have to beat one of the top teams any way if we're gonna go anywhere." "Hey, E.J.," said Steve Vick-ers. "That's the same thing I just said. Think of something original, wlilya?" "I have no preference," said goalie Steve Baker.

"Some of the guys think It would be good to go out to L.A., thinking about two years ago (when the Rangers beat the Kings in the first round and went on to the finals). But hey, we're here, there and everywhere! Let's go for it! "We've been through a lot of turmoil and a lot of other bullbleep this year," said Barry Beck. "Let's face it, we're gonna be the underdog no matter who we play. This team has grown together, and we have a lot of pride at stake." HANOI! Johnston also received the Ranger Fan Club award for the most popular Ranger. Meanwhile, Don Maloney was the recipient of the "Player'e Player" sward, voted on by the Rangers By BARRY RUBINSTEIN Staff Sports Writer NEW YORK The Rangers are in! There was a huge collective sigh of relief at the Garden Friday night, after the Rangers' 3-1 triumph over the Chicago Black Hawks finally clinched a Stanley Cup Playoff spot two nights before the end of the regular season. The well-played victory ended the questions, the worries and most Importantly of all, the pressure of the season-long playoff chase.

"Now we can go Into Philly Sunday night and have some fun," laughed Don Maloney. "We'll be relaxed, and maybe we can fatten up our record a little bit." As a result of Friday's win, tonight's encounter with the Flyers at the Spectrum won't be a do-or-dle dilemma. And by doing it themselves, the Rangers didn't have to depend on the Islanders beating the Caps last night, in which case the Blueshirts would have backed in. "We didn't want to rely on the Islanders doing us any favors, that's for sure," Maloney added. "They'd probably go out of their way to hurt us." Of course, it's a sad commentary on the Rangers' season when you go down to the wire wondering about making the playoffs in a league where nearly everyone and their brothers, sisters and great aunts qualify.

But none of that matters now. The Rangers' strong play down the stretch (5-2-2 in their last nine games) has given them that much needed intangible factor confidence. "We've played all the top teams in our last few games and played well," said Mike Allison, whose cheerleading played a major role in getting the club back on its feet. "I think the other teams are all gonna know we're around. It's a Carol Blazejowskl of the New Jersey Gems tries to drive past the Dallas Diamonds' Nancy Lleberman.

Passing Her Game, Thomas Ignores Pain Isles Clinch Title By DREW SCHWARTZ Staff Sports Writer JERSEY CITY As the basketball rolled out of bounds early in the third quarter, Janice Thomas accidently stepped on it and fell to the ground. The New Jersey Gems guard was writhing in pain, and it looked as though she would be finished in Friday night's game. But this was the playoffs, a time when adrenaline becomes a painkiller. "It was just a sprain," said Thomas after the Gems defeated the Dallas Diamonds 91-86 in the first game of the playoffs. "I'm more psyched up because It's the playoffs." So Thomas stood up, and slowly took a few steps.

Forget that she limped while she walked. Forget that she hopped the first two trips up and down the court. Just remember that during the playoffs pain becomes a battle with the mind. "It hurt somewhat, but I tried to block it out of my mind," Thomas said. "Since this is the playoffs, it was easier to forget about it." Oh, and how she forgot.

Thomas had three steals and four points, including a basket that tied at the score at 48-48, during an 18-4 Gems burst. A Thomas jump shot that capped the spree gave the Gems a 58-51 lead. "When we need the ball you know she's going to get a steal," said Gems coach Kathy Mosolino. Her eighth steal of the game she finished with nine led ff As V5 to a basket by Willodean Harris, which gave the Gems an 86-73 lead, their biggest margin of the game. And when the Nancy Lleberman led the Diamonds back by scoring nine points in less than a minute, Thomas hit Carol Blazejowskl for a corner jump shot to stem the tide.

"Janice was yelling at me to get my rear in gear," said Blazejowskl, who finished with a game-high 35 points. "I know if I move I'll get the ball and that's what I did." Inevitably, the ball wound up in the hands of Blazejowskl or any other Gem who had an open shot. Thomas finished the game with 15 assists, which set a WBL playoff record for assists previously held by Rita Easterling (who had 14 for Chicago against Iowa April 10, 1979). Thomas learned how to play basketball in the streets of New York City, where scoring wasn't important. Passing the ball was the only way the 5-foot-3 guard could impress taller boys to choose her.

So she passed, and she played. Now when she passes, her teammates are impressed. Her scoring totals don't really matter. Neither does the soreness in her ankle. DALLAS (SS) Bam 00-00.

Then Gillies blasted a 50-foot slapshot past Washington goalie Mike Palmateer 3 minutes later and Hector Marini poked in a loose puck after a shot by Gillies on a power play at 2: 07 of the third period.
