4-B-PRESS, Binhamton, N. Y. Nov. 15, 1968 Cousteau Turns to Whales in Undersea Series Previews was so rich and impressive, father Jacques decided to save it for a second whale episode. Instead a crew was dispatched back to Mystic, home of the Whaling Museum, for a nostaglic look at the past, the reconditioned ships, harpoons and the feel of whaling life forever imprinted in the minds of Melville's "Moby Dick" readers.

IX PROWLING AROUND Mystic, by a stroke of luck, a 1921 film on the last voyage of the Charles W. Morgan whaling ship was uncovered and scenes from this antique treasure appear on the show. Thanks to indiscriminate killing by man, the famous blue whale, seen towering tions of blocking and signaling. By accident the crew discovered high-pitched motors on little boats drove the whales crazy, and the noise jammed their communication lines. This method was successful in isolating a baby whale from the pack as the small boats circled the baby blocking its sonar stream of signals to the grownups.

This water game of ring-around-the rosie also worked during tagging at-tempts for future identification. HOWEVER, SETBACKS were incurred in the tagging procedure. Either the identification marks wouldn't stay on, or were too deeply embedded, said Savidore, so over gawkers in Washington's Smithsonian Institute, is for all purposes extinct according to Cousteau, since the mammals, great rarities now, travel the oceans separately, and their chances of finding a mate are too small to offer any hope of survival. This is not true of the fin back which has become too abundant in Cousteau's opinion, or the sperm whale, which travels in groups of a bull and seven or eight cows and a baby, always on the move, pausing to sleep in snatches near the surface, diving deep to feed on squid. Because of its size alone, the great whale, with all its unanswerable questions, seems a mpst visual springboard for Cousteau's second season opening on the tube, and the kids particularly are urged to tune in tonight.

Cousteau settled for a rope belt which seemed to do the trick without discomfort. Another sonar experiment took place with a captive killer whale up in ABC's Redwood City Marine World when chief diver Albert Falco, played a tape of Seattle's famous whale, Nauck sounds that brought forth answering bub-b 1 and much steaming around the big tank. Using a plywood board for a sonar wall, Falco also managed to block off responses. Last winter a crew, under the direction of son Philippe Cousteau, traveled to the California gray whale mating grounds in Baja's Scammon's Boy for footage on this show. However, Philippe's quota Judd time slot both on a date to be announced.

WORKING IN THE Indian Ocean off the island of Madagascar, the French crew began sonar experiments to determine how whales communicate with each other, and in the process emerged with "incredible underwater footage of the fin back and the sperm whale" according to writer Larry Savidove, merely a "Moby Dick" fan until assigned the Cousteau script. (R) DIAL 11 Tonight's THE HIGH CHAPARRAL. "The Deceivers" p. Channel 40) Good episode. A fairly typical western plot with several fine chase scenes and a threat to the old homestead by a band of renegades, is well bolstered by a few interesting characters. Robert Loggia plays a savage, hate motivated half-breed who lives only to kill the white man, while Bonnie Bed-elia portrays his daughter, a girl who loves her father but has never believed any of the stories about him.

Thanks to Loggia, Miss Bedelia (who apparently was once frightened by a Sandy Dennis movie), and Henry Darrow, the hour sustains your interest. (Color.) THE UNDERSEA WORLD OF JACQUES COUSTEAU: "WHALES." p.m.. Channel 34) The grace and beauty of the world's largest animal is captured grand underwater sequences, as Cousteau's crew seeks to tag fin-backs and sperm whales ior tuture study. Divers hitch short rides holding onto fins while filming whale movements, apparently unafraid of retaliation. Cousteau also conducts sonar experiments, using tape machines and small boats with high, whiny outboard motors, whose noise apparently jams whale blips and squeaks, their system of communication.

Even the surface footage of whales crushing the blue Indian Ocean is sufficient to evoke the sea's heady flavor and keep you tuned to your set. THE NAME OF THE GAME. "The Protector" p. Channel 40) Andy Hill looks down from a helicopter and what does he see but an arsenal of weapons and military vehicles amidst the vast real estate holdings of millionaire Herman Allison (guest star Robert Young). Allison is going to settle the racial problem once and for all, but publisher Howard needs proof.

The staff approaches Allison's friend, former actress Magda Blain (guest star Anne Baxter) and former JSen. Walter Goddard (guest vstar Ralph Meeker), and Allison, to end the meddling, arranges a Alas, a fine cast going to waste. (Color.) THE FELONY SQUAD. "The Nowhere Man" p. Channel 34) Part 2.

The concluding half of this drama which introduced new regular Robert DoQui to the series as Negro detective Cliff Sims, is mostly routine police stuff, but there's a satisfactory action-filled finale for fans. DoQui is a welcome addition to the show and future plots involving his role might prove of interest, thanks to his well defined characterization. FRIDAY NIGHT MOVIE. "Diamond Head" (9-11 p. Channel 12) (1962).

Strictly for fans who like their soap opera lavishly mounted and star-studded with Hollywood names. Charlton Heston plays a bigger-than-life plantation owner in Hawaii who wants everything his way. His sister (Yvette Mimieux) is equally independent and announces she is going to marry a Hawaiian native (James Darren). The conflict rages from here on to the finale, with Heston baring his chest and teeth at the entire supporting cast including George Chakiris as Darren's sullen brother, France Nuyen as Heston's long-suffering mistress, and Elizabeth Allen as a socialite on the make for Heston. The Hawaiian locations are glorious and the cast is certainly attractive.

The two mimic a dirty, bedraggled hippie combo, and then go back to old vaudeville buck-and wing routines, shuffling to "Side By Side." There's a touch of sweetness to the straw hat number, until it turns into a shambles as the boys try out new muscles to outdo each, other. The weakness of the show is still in the writing, since neither Rickles nor Adams has material that's up to their grade.

STAR TREK. "The Tholian Web" (10-11 p. Channel 40) Captain Kirk cannot beam himself back aboard the Enterprise from a disintegrating vessel, but the crew cannot rescue him because an alien web has entrapped their ship, and fighting it would entail disturbing the space in which they hope to recover Kirk's body. Channel 34) As a form of therapy, former TV director Shelly Gould (guest star Sam Wa-namaker) is permitted by his doctors to film conditions at the mental hospital. Gould hopes to get theater distribution for the film, not only to reestablish his own career, but to bring about better conditions at the hospital. But wife Kay (guest star Lee Grant) and her brother Art (Martin E. Brooks), who are looking for a box office sensation, insert some spicjr scenes in the film, thereby jeopardizing the chances of getting a hospital release. The latter, in fact, take the matter to court.
