50 Daily Record. Northwest N.J. Saturday, July 28, 1984 Nunez groove finds 1 Daily RecordKAREN TOUHEY Hugo Nunez is reaching for lofty goals. By STEVEN KINNEY Daily Record Stall Writer LIVINGSTON When Hugo Nunez defeated Mike McHale in the opening round of the pre-qualifier for the North American Tennis Open during the week, it was not much of a surprise. What was unique, however, was that Nunez took less than an hour to dispose of his opponent.

In his IVi years on the professional tennis tour, Nunez has traveled to just about every country in the world. And everywhere he goes, he is known as a deliberate, methodical, sometimes even slow, tennis player. Nunez, a resident of Rockaway and native of Ecuador, returned to New Jersey this week to compete in the North American Tennis Open, which begins today at Newark Academy. But the way he breezed through the pre-qualify-ing round, it appears he is already looking toward something bigger. Despite his No.

374 ranking on the world computer, Nunez wasted little time in proving how good a player really must be just to make the tour. He polished off his McHale in 50 minutes, 6-0, 6-0. And yesterday, he reached the into the qualifier." He has earned that ranking by playing satellite tournaments all over Europe, the largest of which feature $75,000 purses. The North American Open is a $125,000 tournament, Nunez's largest one since last summer. But Nunez, a Morris Hills High School graduate whose high school tennis career lasted 12 matches (he won 11), says that money is not his only motivation.

"I earn money by playing tennis and from sponsors. But I play because I enjoy it. I don't know how long I'll play; I only set goals for myself from year to year. And my goal for this year is to make it into the US. Open." Despite his diminutive stature, qualifying round with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over David Delsini at the West Orange Tennis Club.

Though Nunez, who stands only 5-feet-8, faced stiffer challenges as the pre-qualifier continued, he still had little trouble earning one of the four berths into the qualifying round of the main draw. Nunez explained that some of his drive toward the qualifying round stems from the fact that he should have been there in the first place. "The only reason I'm playing here is because I missed the deadline for the qualifier. I called in a day late, and they told me I would have to play here. But my ranking was enough to get me straight the Philadelphia Phillies' front office into the job of manager last year, will return to manage the National League club in 1985.

In other baseball news, Joe Cronin, former Red Sox general manager and a member of the baseball Hall of Fame, was in fair condition at Massachusetts General Hospital. Glenz wins, but U.S. loses golf Prior to the Open, which no doubt would be the highlight of his brief career, Nunez must concentrate on playing probably a week's worth of his best tennis at Newark Academy. Although he has scored victories over higher ranked players on the tour, Nunez will be tested by some of the top 50 players in the world this week. However he fares against those players, and whether or not he qualifies for the Open, Nunez will have one more reminder of just how far he has left to go when he competes in a $25,000 tournament in Illinois in August.
