Section Daily Record Northwest New Jersey Sunday, December 2, 1984 Page CI LJ ffuffD Eskies defeat New Providence By ED MILLS Daily Record Staff Writer i'l I 1 1 xf- CHATHAM The defense finally had its day. All year Chatham Borough has relied on its overpowering offense. But it was two strong defensive stands in the last eight minutes of yesterday's game that gave the Eskies a 20-14 victory "over New Providence and the Section 2, Group I state championship. The game, played at Otto Haas Field, attracted a crowd of approximately 4,500 fans. "When we had to stop 'em, we did," said Chatham Borough's Chris Sheppard, who besides carrying the ball 29 times for 213 yards, played a solid game at linebacker.

"We definitely thought we could put the game away if we could get a score of any kind in the second half the way our defense was playing. But give credit to New Providence, they kept coming at us and never let us Trailing by six points at 20-14, New Providence, 7-4, got a break when Chatham quarterback Jim Schroeder fumbled the ball away to Brent Kaiser at the Pioneer 38. A 21-yard gain on a third-and-10 play by halfback Mike Liberato helped New Providence move to a first down at the Chatham 10 with under eight minutes left. Two plays later Alan Niemela attempted to throw into the end zone for the touchdown, but safety Joe Cataldo came up with the big interception with 7:36 left. "We were in straight man-to-man coverage and my man (Chris Leffler) did a 10-yard out pattern on the left side," said Cataldo, whose interception was his sixth of the year, a Chatham school record.

"He was in front of me, but at the last moment I cut in front of him to take the ball away." The Story, Page C9 Please see Defense on Page C1 1 Tigers claw past Warren Hills, 26-17, in Group II final By JIM PARACHINI Daily Record Staff Writer ensuing Warren Hills kickoff and bulled his way up the middle of the field for an 84-yard touchdown that put Dover on the board and eliminated any chance of a Warren Hills rout. Dover, 8-3 and the top seed, scored three more touchdowns for a 26-17 win, capturing the North Jersey Section 2, Group II crown. For the Tigers it was their first state title since 1970, four years before the current playoff system was put into action. "I never counted us out," said Dover coach Jerry Tardive. "It's the character of the kids.

The whole season has been like this game. We start ed out slow but just kept coming on, "We really came out to play in the second half and it was a matter of our kids wanting it bad enough. There's no doubt that Smith's first touchdown was the spark that got us going." After stopping Dover on three downs third-seeded Warren Hills, 8-3, took its first possession and marched 83 yards in 12 plays for a 7-0 lead. Junior fullback Ed Klimas put the ball in the end zone on a 11-yard run up the middle. The Blue Streaks held Dover to just three downs again and this time marched 63 yards in 10 plays with Craig Compoli completing the drive with a 1-yard score.

Jack Throckmorton added his second extra-point making it 14-0 Warren Hills. Then came Smith's kickoff return. "I thought the holes were going to close," said Smith describing the run-back. "The team blocked well and then I slipped one tackle and it was just a race to the goal line." Dover fumbled the ball away on its next drive giving Warren Hills a first and 10 on the Dover 5. However, the Blue Streaks could not put the ball in and had to settle for a 28-yard field goal by Throckmorton.

"We showed we could stop their running game when we held them to the field goal," said Tardive. "I think the key though was us scoring that touchdown before the half. The Tigers took their last possession and drove 67 yards for a score with 26 seconds remaining in the" first half. Senior halfback Shawn Laverty (15 carries for 71 yards) scored on a 21-yard run to pull Dover to within four, 17-13. Warren Hills had taken its first two possessions and cashed them in for a 14-0 lead. A targe crowd supporting the Tigers had become very quiet. Dover was the favorite to win but hadn't shown why up to this point. Enter Dover running back Keith Smith. The 5-10, 140-pound junior took the hi Flyers 3 Capitals 5 Penguins 1 Bruins 4 B.
