It's been 33 years since she first tried to get a college degree, and that was 12 years after high school. Samuels, who was elected homecoming queen Monday, expects to graduate in May with a major in English and a minor in sociology. "I pray that you do not have to go through what I went through" to get a degree, she says. She says her parents refused to attend her high school graduation and wouldn't let her attend college. She made her first college try 12 years after high school, but ran out of money after a year.

Four years later, she went back, but again could stay only a year. She worked as a dressmaker and designer for the next 27 years and in 1981 enrolled at Claflin, a small private college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. She hasn't missed a class. Terence Cardinal Cooke, the terminally ill archbishop of New York, has sent notes of sympathy to former President Jimmy Carter and congratulations to Pope John Paul II. In a wire to Carter on Tuesday, Cooke extended to Carter and his family "my heartfelt sympathy and prayers on the death of your beloved sister, Ruth." Ruth Carter Stapleton died Monday of pancreatic cancer.

Cooke, stricken with leukemia, has been in isolation in his quarters adjoining St. Patrick's Cathedral. In a wire to the pope, Cooke rejoiced at John Paul's 25th anniversary as a bishop, the New York Archdiocese announced. Today's birthdays: Actress Deborah Kerr is 62. Author Truman Capote is 59.

Lady Bird Johnson said her late husband "had high hopes" for the Job Corps "and to think that it justified his hopes in the lives of some young men and women as it did so wonderfully and just so dramatically in the story of George Foreman." Robert Zufall, on the staff of Dover General Hospital, to share his medical knowledge with the less-fortunate people of lea, Peru. "I was interested in spreading the ability I have with others who might need it in the Third World," says the 59-year-old urologist. A urologist is an expert on the urogenital or urinary system and its diseases. Zufall began his charitable work some years ago after joining a CARE program that sent him to lea, a city of 100,000 about 200 miles south of Lima. It was in this desert city, where some 70 percent of the inhabitants are poverty stricken, that the Mountain Lakes resident instructed local medicos on modern techniques and procedures.

This past summer, Zufall and his wife, Kay, 57, returned to the South American country for two weeks. The doctor assisted in setting up nutritional and sanitation programs in a town called Pueblos Jovenes, while Kay taught English. "The houses are without roofs and straw mats serve as walls, because the sun shines 365 days a year," Zufall said. As a result of their experiences, the Zufalls are putting together a project that would send other doctors who have knowledge of Spanish and a desire to share their wealth of medical expertise with underdeveloped areas. "We'd like to contact other doctors in the states who would like to do this," says the Harvard Medical School graduate.

"The people have a need for medical assistance." And young Peruvian doctors, such as Alberto Guzman, are hungry for the help. Guzman served what would be comparable to a surgical residency under Zufall. "(Guzman) had all the book knowledge," Zufall says. "But he didn't have any hands-on experience." Together, the two performed various types of kidney surgery, which enabled Guzman to extend his capabilities as a physician. Zufall will continue helping next year during his vacation, a trip the couple is already planning.

The project needs governmental approval, he says, but Zufall is eager to gel it under way, because tne neeu is so great. "Everyone there wanted a Dr. Zufall," Kay says, beaming. "He wants to teach other people how to take care of the sick." To order home delivery, please call 538-5511. Customers should receive their paper by 6:30 a.m.
