EINGHAMTON PRESS 29 Dec. 24, 1958 Col Scout PimBoints 3 Key Berrv a Character Broviis' Bixler Lauds Unitasi, Parker, Gino (But Berry (Good) tiff' 4 -w i 4 1 i muz" 1 i -fiMum: Km'" 7 I 1 f.t'Z I HCAV i i I J- I -V, s-' Cleveland) Here's a perfectly good scouting report on the Baltimore Colts for anyone who may be interested. Paul Bixler of the Cleveland Browns scouted the Colts but the Browns won't be needing his report now. The Colts have three of pro football's finest performers, says Bixler in the report that would have gone to coach Paul E. Brown had Cleveland won the Eastern Division title Sunday instead of losing to the New York Giants.

The three are quarterback Johnny Unitas, tackle Jim Parker and end Giro Marchetti. Bixler, who has seen every team in the league during his sleuthing trips, said he rates Marchetti "the best defensive end in the game." Gino Is strong and "puts tremendous pressure on the passer," he said. Of the 275-pound Parker, ex-Ohio State University star, Bixler said the Colts "run a lot of their stuff to the left and with good reason. Parker just bowls over the end." Bixler added that A raw carrot a day is included. Berry is so nearsighted he says "If I didn't know that the first letter on those eye charts was an 4E' I wouldn't have any idea what to say when they give me a test." He wears contact lenses while playing.

In the last two season games in sunny California, he also donned shatterproof goggles. Berry also wears a special harness for a trick back and mud cleats on one shoe because one of his less is shorter than the other. Other Colt players eyed Berry with askance when he first reported. He insisted on washing his own practice pants. He liked their fit and didn't want to lose them.

But after seeing Berry become their star left end, the other Colts have adopted an attitude of "to each his own." JOHN UNITAS Parker has "good speed for his size. As for Unitas, Bixler adds his voice to others who have praised the Colt quarterback's poise and rifle arm. "He throws short and long equally well. Unitas gets back into throwing position fast, usually setting up about five yards Baltimore One of the best forward pass catchers in the National Football League has poor eyes, a weak back and a limp. That's Raymond Berry of the Baltimore Colts, a self-made leader in his field and a man of idiosyncrasy.

The New York Giants are going to have to worry about stopping Berry in their championship game Sunday. Berry has been at the top of the league's pass receivers for the past two seasons. Last year, his 800 yards gained was the most and this year his 56 catches led the loop aiong with Pete Retzlaff of Philadelphia. Berry also has put on the best one-game performance of the last two years. Last season, he did it by catching a dozen throws for 224 yards against Washington and this year he snagged 10 for 149 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Detroit.

When Berry was drafted 20th by the Colts after graduation from Southern Methodist in 1954, he was considered only a so-so end among the stars of the NFL. He has blossomed by the dint of ceaseless practice. He brings his own portable backstop with him to practice. This saves time and steps in retrieving footballs he has thrown at him as long as someone is willing to do the pegging. Berry deliberately has them thrown to him high, low and to the side until he has become adept at making the most difficult catch appear easy.

His unusual characteristics start with his first name. He insists you call him by the full name, not the nickname Ray. He walks around squeezing a plastic known as "silly putty" to strengthen his hands. He carries a scale even on road trips to be sure his weight stays at 183 pounds. Berry studied nutrition and eats a diet high in proteins such as salmon, liver, steak and peanut butter, for energy.

Colt officials gave no explanation for the windfall in announcing the extra allotment of tickets for the Colt-Giants game in New York. The rabid Colt fans had snapped up 15,000 tickets all they expected to get on Monday.

Only season ticket holders were eligible to buy them. Ticket manager Ray Gilland said the new tickets all $4 bleacher seats would be offered for sale between 10 a. m. and 3 m. to the general public.
