RUSSELL The fifth son of Robert Campbell, shown in the accompanying photo, was John. His face reveals the set jaw and bushy overhanging brows of the Scotsman. For the Campbells were Ulstermen who came to this country to escape the religious persecutions of the Old World when at one time 50,000 persons were massacred in a few days. An act of Parliament in 1662 required a 11 ministers and churches to conform rigidly to the "established church," which affected the Protestant Presbyterians of Scotland. Under Queen these "dissenters" were not allowed to educate their own children, and the state of affairs became so bad that many set sail for the New World seeking religious and political freedom.

This was the era when Queen Anne said she "feared the prayers of John Knox more than all the Armies of England." The influx of the Scots into Pennsylvania began in the early 18th century, corning at the rate of 4,500 persons in 1729 alone. Many settled in southeastern Pennsylvania but did not mix well with the Germans who were also migrating to that area at the same time. Consequently, the Scots, rugged and hardy individualists, Legal ADMINISTRATRIX' NOTICE In re Estate of WALTER J. DREW, late of Jersey Shore, Lycoming County, Pennsyl, vania deceased. 1. Loganton, Pa. used to privations and rigid discipline, betook themselves farther to the west and soon populated the country west of the Susquehanna. Here some of them figured in Indian massacres and some went "over the ridge of the Bald Eagle Mountains" into the West Branch valley where they made up a nucleus of those who adopted the Fair Play system of government. They wanted no part of the dominations of this new land by Great Britian, and were ready to fight at the drop of a hat to maintain the liberty and conscience they had suffered so much thus far to achieve.

Thus they gave good service during the hostilities, dying again in the cause of freedom, as they had in Scotland and in Ulster. John Campbell's wife was Mary Diggan, also of Scotch ancestry. Her name in Scotch would be spelled "March." Her father was William Diggan and she was born in New Jersey. Children of this couple were: Jeremiah, who married Margaret English, William, who married Charity Hostrander, Jane Elizabeth, who married James Oakes, Rhoda, who married John Oakes, Emily, who married Norris Callahan, Rachel, who married James Lomison, Hannah, who married Delos Phillips, Malinda, who married Jacob Badgley, and Philene, who married George 0. Veley.
