Kennedy-McCarthy campaign in California rolled into its final hours today on the eve of the presidential primary carrying the year's biggest prize. By JACK BELL AP Political Analyst Los Angeles California's Democratic presidential primary tomorrow apparently will trigger a furious assault by Senators Robert F.

Kennedy and Eugene J. McCarthy on Vice-President Hubert H. Humphrey's convention vote strength. Either Kennedy or McCarthyand just possibly both will be politically maimed by the outcome of their battle for the state's 174-vote share of the 1,312 needed for the presidential nomination at the Chicago party convention. Kennedy has indicated he will consider quitting if his effort to refurbish his winner image here after his Oregon Associated Press WIREPHOTO.

Kennedy wanted his and Senator Eugene J. McCarthy's forces to join after tomorrow's crucial vote to deny the nomination to Vice-President Hubert H. Humphrey, who has entered no primaries.

McCarthy said he was making no such deals. The victor in the California primary wins the right to compete with Humphrey for the Democratic presidential nomination. He also gets a bloc of 174 national convention votes of the 1,312 needed to capture the nomination. WHATEVER he may say after the California primary, the loser tomorrow will be written off as a major contender. Both candidates moved into the more heavily populated areas of Southern California yesterday after appearing at San Francisco Saturday night in a debate which produced few sparks and no clear winner.

The nationally televised program did provide some extra exposure for the lesser known McCarthy and "his views. The American Broadcasting Co. announced the program reached an estimated 32,000,000 viewers. A survey conducted by National Arbiton said the telecast drew 38.8 per cent of the national television audience. Always subject to change, McCarthy's schedule for the last day of the campaign showed only three appearancesall in the Los Angeles area.

BUT KENNEDY, as usual, planned a rugged finale in all three of the state's major population centers. His schedule called for a flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco, then a return to the Los Angeles area and a flight to San Diego. It was a 13-hour itinerary, which could stretch to 14 or 15. In a television appearance yesterday, Kennedy said he and McCarthy might differ on details but that both wanted to take the nation in new directions. He said only Hum Mr.

Johnson will make a sentimental journey back to the Glassboro campus. But all signs point that way. He met Kosygin last June in an atmosphere of new understanding and friendliness that was dubbed the "spirit of Hollybush." The college presi-ent's mansion "Hollybush" was the site of the meeting. Mr. Johnson was expected to make a bid to revive the understanding that lifted-hopes following that meeting.

THERE ALSO are recurring reports in Washington that an Austin, Tex. (UPI) President Johnson heads back to Washington tonight to prepare for an expected commencement address tomorrow at Glassboro, N. State College site of last year's summit meeting with Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin. Mr. Johnson faced a busy White House schedule this week, including an official state visit tomorrow by President Jose Joaquin Trejos Fernandez of Costa Rica.

THE WHITE HOUSE has not commented on reports that Humphrey Enjoys Showing Off His Holdings, hut Not Very Fast phrey would gain if they failed to unite after California. "The struggle must be with Vice President Humphrey," Kennedy said. "He supports present policies. Four more years of that would be very dangerous." On another television program, McCarthy said he would not join Kennedy "in order to stop Hubert Humphrey, that I will make my own race and see what happens." Kennedy said he expected to win in California. McCarthy that the outcome should be "very close." MCCARTHY added a postscript to the debate yesterday by issuing a statement charging Kennedy with distorting the Minnesota senator's position in Vietnam and racial problems.

He said Kennedy used "scare tactics" which could increase "suspicion and mistrust among the races" on McCarthy's proposals for moving Negroes out of ghettoes. McCarthy also said Kennedy had distorted his stand supporting a coalition government to include the pro-Communist National Liberation Front in a new government for South Vietnam. He said Kennedy apparently would continue to support the present government while demanding that it accept reforms refused for 20 years. 1 The Minnesota senator released his statement while making an unscheduled visit with a small crowd in the Negro community of Watts. They were processed quickly and issued partial pay, airline tickets and new khaki uniforms, with on-the-spot uniform pressing Minnesota opponent.

MCCARTHY has consistently rejected the idea that he will fold up his tent even though a loss tomorrow would leave him with a lone victory out of four primary contests with the New Yorker. There remains the remote possibility that both Kennedy and McCarthy could take it on the chin in tomorrow's voting, from a delegate slate headed by State Attorney General Thomas C. Lynch. Originally for President Johnson before he quit the contest, this slate is running unpledged. Most of its members seem to favor Humphrey as the nominee.

Humphrey men have been busy beating the bushes for New York support. McCarthy said he intends to campaign in New York whatever happens in California. He said what he calls his crusade will continue up to the convention, regardless of developments. McCarthy made it clear he intends to pursue his independent course, still based primarily on his opposition to Johnson war policies which Humphrey has supported. Although the senator and Vice-President have had long years of political association in Minnesota, McCarthy seems to be making it increasingly difficult for him to swing in Humphrey's direction if it appears at convention time that he cannot himself win the nomination.

McCarthy said yesterday that Humphrey and former Vice-President Richard M. Nixon, top contender for the GOP presidential nomination, had arrived at about the same position on Vietnam.
