Friday. (9-10 p. Channel 40.) 'Big Guy' Is Special On Boxing New York The hopes and disillusionments, the ambitions and frustrations of two young heavyweight boxers trying to fight their way up the ladder of success to the coveted championship of the world will be candidly depicted in "The Big Guy," a one-hour ABC News special to be aired on ABC Friday (9 to 10 p. on Channel 34.

The program is the fourth new presentation in a series of 16 original and repeat documentaries being telecast on ABC during 1966. "The Big Guy" will be repeated Sunday, May 22 (4-5 p. The documentary relates the true story of a great dream shared by two heavyweight fighters and shows what happens to that dream when both fighters meet in a climactic head-on clash in Madison Square Garden, and afterward as they face the imposing odds and challenges of the fight game. The "big guy" referred to in the ABC News special is Jim Beattie, a 6'9" goliath. His opponent is Dick Whipper-man.

Their fight, candidly photographed for the special, is a punishing and dramatic showdown. And only one of them can win. Following their clash, each boxer meets defeats. But both continue the battle against increasingly tremendous odds burning with the dream and determination that is the heart of the fight game. NARRATED by James Lipscomb, "The Big Guy" was conceived a year and a half ago when both fighters displayed the potential to become serious contenders for the heavyweight crown.

But the last 18 months have been harsh to both boys. Whipperman, who has compiled an undistinguished record in a long string of fights, is currently a preliminary boxer appearing in arenas across the nation. Fate, moreover, has been even more cruel to the "big guy," Jim Beattie. Big Jim has had eight fights since his dramatic clash with Whipperman 18 months ago, and has won six by. knockouts.

But in his last bout, held several months ago in Madison Square Garden, he suffered a brutal beating at the hands of a heavyweight Morning 7:00 Today Show 52) Social Security 7:05 52 CBS News 7:30 go Today Show 52) RFD with Steve Ferdo 7:55 52 The Funny Company 8:00 52) -Captein TCanqaroo 8:30 6-Today Show 9:00 Lone Ranger 52) Exercise with Gloria STETA 9:30 (461 The Big Picture 52) STETA Astro Boy 10:00 g6 Eye Guest 41 Mr. Willoby and Igy 10:25 NBC New 52) Ralph Carroll 10:30 55 Concentration 61 Morning Star 52) Andy of Mayberry 4l Supermarket Sweep 1 1 :30 61 Paradise Bay 52) Dick Van Dyke 34! AS A RESULT, Beattie had his license revoked by the New York State Boxing Commission. Similar action was taken in ensuing weeks by other states having reciprocal agreements with New York. Today, Beattie has returned to his home in St. Paul, where he is waging the most important fight of his life to regain his license. Following the Woody fight, Beattie entered the Mayo Clinic for observation.

Doctors there found nothing physically wrong with him that might prevent his continuing his ring career. Beattie claims that New York revoked his license without giving him a physical examination and, therefore, he has instituted legal means to have the ban rescinded. Hearings on the matter are currently pending in both New York State and Minnesota. "The Big Guy" is the poi-gnat story of two young men who start their careers with the highest hopes of achieving success, and after their paths cross in a dramatic and climactic meeting, both fall by the wayside. Interviewed recently for the ABC News special, Beattie describes the disappointments and heartbreaks he has encountered during the last 18 months.

It makes for a dramatic comparison with the statements and thoughts of the big fighter made 18 months ago when he seemed to be nearing the peak of his career.
