Page 8-Tuesday, January 9, 1973-The Express, Lock Haven, Pa. iiiMiiiiniiiiimiiiiiiMMiHimiimiMimiiiiiiiii Notes from I By ROSS NEVII EXPRESS SPORTS WRITER MIKE PACKER In the New York Daily News recently a column by famous New York sports writer Dick Young had an interesting quote from New York Jets head football coach Weeb Ewbank. The column read in part: "Weeb Ewbank gives Jets One-Year Notice. He had hoped to go out with a winner this year. Now, he will give it one more chance.

Then he will be through as coach. "Whether he will be through as GM, as well, will depend upon the demands and ambitions of the man who succeeds him. "Weeb, I expect, will step down as head coach a year from now, and will hand-pick his successor. "The time has come, too, to start making long-range plans for a quarterback replacement. If a good one is available when the Jets' turn to draft comes up.

Weeb says he'll go for him, but he's not really that anxious. "He has a sleeper tucked away in Pennsylvania Mike Packer, the kid who worked with them in camp last summer. Weeb told him to go back and coach at his alma mater, little Lock Haven State, that Packer would learn more about quarterbacking there than taxiing it as a pro. "He's big and strong, a John Unitas-type kid," says Weeb, sounding very little like a man facing retirement." TWO BIG EVENTS Saturday will mark the first of two Basketball-Wrestling Days' at Lock Haven State College Thomas Fieldhouse. At 3 p.m.

Coach Dick Taylor's LHSC cagers will host a veteran California State club. The Eagles will be seeking revenge as the Vulcans topped the Eagles in December at California by an 8563 score. But we look for the Eagles to Upset the Vulcans in the HOUSE OF NOISE. After an hour break, so the fans can race home for a quick snack, comes two wrestling matches. At 6 p.m.

the undefeated (3-0) LHSC junior varisty team will face always-tough Stevens Trade School. Then at 8 p.m. it will be the LHSC varsity (2-3) out to even up the season record against Jimmy Howard's Oswego State College grappling Lakers. Last year, Coach Dr. Ken Cox's matmen needed a tie in the last bout to hold on for a hard- earned 23-20 win.

LHHS-PENNS VALLEY Tonight is the 10th meeting for Lock Haven High School and Penns Valley High School in wrestling. The Bobcats hold the edge with six wins to three for the Rams. The three victories for PV came in 1966 by 27-19: and In the first meet in 1964, it was a fine year for Lock Haven under Coach John Englert as the 'Cats rolled to wins in the first seven matches of the season including a 43-8 victory over Penns Valley. The long win streak came to an end that year before the largest high school wrestling crowd ever to jam the LHHS gym as Clearf ield won a thriller, 23-20. The Bobcats had many fine wrestlers that year including Steve Hale (10-0-1), Larry Rippey (9-1), John Schrot (10-1), Larry Cuba (7-1), Gary Brooks (9-1-1), Fred Walker (5-2-1), Jack Shearer (9-2), Len Hinton (8-3), Bob Janet (6-4), John JS-Roms clash headlines court card Sewalt (6-4-1), JessSigmund (20).

ALL AMERICAN A recent edition of the York Dispatch had a picture of Bob Hoffman, Coach Emeritus of U.S.

Olympic weightliftlng team, being honored on his 75th birthday. Also shown in the picture watching Mr. Hoffman cut into a huge birthday cake was Ann Paules, senior physical education major at Lock Haven State College, who last summer was picked for the second team Girls Ail-American Softball team as a member of the York Barbellettes club. NEW ASSOCIATION Being formed in this country is a new organization called the National Collegiate Letter-men's Association. The goal of this non-profit organization is to reach every collegiate letterman, past and present.

The NCLA is compiling a directory of collegiate lettermen and hopes to offer scholarships, to sons and daughters of former varisty athletes who show potential either in the classrooms or on the playing fields. Inquiries for membership may be sent to NCLA, P.O. Box 1745, Lake Havasu City, Arizona 86403. NAIA For the first time in several years, the Pennsylvania Conference did not have any NAIA Football All-Americans on the first or second team for the 1972 season. However, several players received Honorable Mention recognition: Carl Brown, end from Millersville: tackle Mark Riddell, Clarion: offensive backs Jim Romaniszyn, Edinboro and Steve Schaufert, Millersville.

None were listed for honorable mention on the defensive unit. LOCK HAVEN The Central State Basketball League question who will succeed State College as champion? could be answered tonight when Jersey Shore takes on Penns Valley at Spring Mills. In other CSL action, Lock Haven is at Bucktail for the Bobcats' loop opener and Bald Eagle Area hosts Bellefonte. Bald Eagle-Nittany travels to Lewisburg for a West Branch Conference game and, on the collegiate scene, Lock Haven State entertains Indiana University of Pa. at Thomas Fieldhouse.

BULLDOGS "You have to beat them they don't beat themselves," Penns Valley basketball Coach Dave Edwards said of the Jersey Shore High School Bulldogs, who are visiting the Rams' home court tonight as both teams gun for their second victory in the young Central State League campaign. Both are 10 in loop play, as the Bulldogs topped Bellefonte, and the Rams downed State College in the openers. The Rams of Coach Edwards, dean of league mentors with 16 years here, are 10-1 on the season, and the Jersey Shore quintet, coached by Bill Graff, is 8-2. The sole Penns Valley loss was to Mt. Union, against whom the Rams got revenge later this season in a three-point triumph.

The Bulldogs' defeat came at the hands of Montoursville in overtime in the holiday tourney at Williamsport, and Huntingdon in December. Edwards counts the league win this past weekend over State College by some 20 points as the outstanding achievement of his lads, the Little Lions defending loop champs, and titlists six of the past seven years. Leading the Rams in points arc Randy Stover, 6-4 center, and forward Chuck Andrews, 6-0, both hitting around 17 per game in 11 contests. Going at the other forward is Harold Yountzy, 5-9, and the two guards are picked from the following quartet: Gary Stine 5-11, Terry Stouffer 57, Ed Stover 6-0, and Kim Whitman 5-6. Aiding Edwards on the cage staff is Bill Lance, who also serves as athletic director for Penns Valley.

Graff was planning to go with the same five that started at Bellefonte Friday, Steve Lazorka and Mike Thomas at the guards, Mark Sundberg at center, and George Teufel and Brian Hoppje at forwards. Teufel hit his season high against the Raiders with 20 points and has been going to the bucket more consistently the past two games. Thomas continues to average just above 15 points per tilt, and Hopple just under 12. BOBCATS Lock haven (3-4) has fallen on hard times, losing its last three games after winning three of its first four. If Coach Greg Bertanzetti can get better play from his big men, the 'Cats could also be a contender for the CSL crown.

The Purple and White's performance against Bucktail tonight should be a gauge of Lock Haven's chances. Coach Jack Hanobic's Bucks also have aspirations for the league title. The Bucks (4-1) thumped Bald Eagle Area 67-47 on Friday as LHHS was bowing to Williamsport in a non-loop encounter. Bob Kelley, Gene Higgle and Denny Getz have been scoring leaders for the Renovo club, with Brad Lacy and Bill Hills rounding out the starting quintet. Bobcat soph Steve Keener was held to points by the Millionaires last week and dipped below the 20-point average for the first time this season.

Don Carbaugh is hitting at an 11-point clip and Ed Foley 12.4. Coach Bertanzetti continues to search for an effective supporting cast among Mike Thorson, Glenn Miller, Joe Geise, Nike Suter and Greg Workman. Tonight's varsity contest will begin at 8 o'clock, the jayvee tilt at 6:30. PANTHERS BEN still has a shot at a second place finish in the West Branch Conference opening cycle. The Panthers are tied with Loyalsock, and Lewisburg, all with 4-2 marks, behind frontrunner Montoursville, 6-0.

After Lewisburg, BEN meets Mifflinburg and Montgomery before starting second half play. The Dragons bumped Mifflinburg 43-29 last Friday and also sport wins over South 67-43, Muncy 61-53, and Warrior Run. Lewisburg fell to Loyalsock 53-43 and Montoursville 63-55. Craig Everett, who hit 32 points against Muncy, and Bob Poynter are Lewisburg's big funs. For BEN, Charlie Lucas has a 17.6 average, Denny Mann 13.1, and Bob Mayes 9.6.

Ron Seyler and Ron Thompson are other starters, with Paul Croak and Ed Welch as top bench jockeys for Coach Bob Heintz' Panthers, 7-3 overall. West Branch varsity games are slated to start at 7:30 p.m., with the jayvee contests at 6 o'clock. gMiiniiiiiiiHiiiiHiiiiiMiiiiimNimniiHiNniir I Area cage standings I WEST BRANCH School Montoursville 6 Loyalsock 4 Bald Eagle-Nittany 4 So. Football PETERSBURG, Lovett resigned as head coach of the Virginia State College football team after three years' service. Golf SAN ANTONIO, Conner carded a four-under-par 67 to lead opening round scorers at the ninth weekly $30,000 Pro Golf Management Tourney. QUESTION How about a rundown on the LHHS-State College High School wrestling series? I say the win this year was the first in about 20 years for Lock Haven, but my friend says not.

He says it has been maybe eight years. ANSWER I'm afraid you're both wrong. State College before this year had won five straight. Lock Haven last had won in 1966 by 26-20. The long overall series now stands at 19 wins for State College, and 16 for LHHS.

The 1951 meet ended in a 22-22 tie. PATTY COSTELLO Patty Costello, who averaged 205.13 in winning an unprecented five championships, easily captured high-average honors for the 1972 Professional Women Bowlers Association tour. Dotty Fothergill, winner of the Long Island Open from North Attleboro, was second with a 200.282 mark, while Millie Martorella, the Ebonite Edge Open champion from Rochester, N.Y., was a close third with 200.191. Lorrie Koch of Carpentersville, 111., and Judy Cook of Grandview. runnerup in Berkley, were the highest ranking righthanders, finishing fourth and fifth with 196.288 and 196.137 respectively.

Miss Koch was the only other woman to win more than once on the 1972 tour, first capturing the BPAA U.S. Open as an amateur in May and then joining the PWBA and winning the Albuquerque Classic in October. Miss Costello, a 24-year-old lefthander, set a new PWBA scoring record when she averaged a fantastic 230 for the 16-game finals of the Japan Starlanes Classic in Tucson in February. MILL HALL The Bald Eagle-Nittany Junior High School wrestling team will open its season tomorrow at Warrior Run, a 7 o'clock meet. Sixty candidates have been drilling since mid-November.

Coach Dick Fetzer, former Bald Eagle Area mat standout, has a nucleus of experienced grapplers to build around this season. The Panther Cub mentor believes that vets Phil Taormina, Mark Williams, Doug Coffey, Greg Hunter, Tom Butler and Mark Deitrick will provide the leadership. All except Hunter, who was a starter two years ago but sat out last season with injuries, saw first string action last year when BEN, Lewisburg and Mifflinburg all posted 6-1 records to share the Lower West Branch League title. Squad members, by weight class, are as follows: 75 Rick Barner, Chris Albright, J.D. Pinkowski, Rich Eisenhower, Greg Springer, Tim Miller, Joe Strouse.

Cole was a BEN Tournament champion and both Stover and Dreibelbis were runners-up. The latter was pinned by Bolin in the finals. Brungard, Davis, Eichenlaub, Bolin, Brown and Tim Malinak remain unbeaten in duals for LHHS. Team and individual records compiled by Coach Elling show that the 'Cats have won 46 bouts in six previous meets while losing 13 and drawing one. Including tournament action, the figures were 64-24-1.

LHHS has compiled an amazing 95 takedowns in dual meets against only 18 for the opposition, Bolin leading with 13 followed by Davis and Brown with 12 each. Don Copeland, Coatesville, an outstanding fullback, was picked for second team honors. Selected for Honorable Mention recognition were linemen Galen Hess, Greencastle, and Barry Johnson, Nottingham, England. Copeland, a junior at LHSC, has been selected as the Most Valuable Player on the Lock Haven team the past three years. Johnson, one of the top scorers in the nation, led the Eagles offense with 18 goals this season. Hess, a senior, has been a driving force in Lock Haven State College's four straight Pennsylvania Conference Western Division championships.

In 1970 the Bald Eagles won the conference title and were co- champions in 1971. Muir, in his third year at the hilltop campus, is bringing the same aggregation to Jersey Shore tonight to test the Bulldog matmen of head Coach Rod Laub. The jayvees grapple at 6:30. the varsity starting at 8 o'clock. The Raiders stand at 2-3 for the season, losing to Williamsport and Clearfield, in addition to the Cats, a pretty formidable threesome, and winning against Hollidaysburg and Penns Valley. The Bulldogs are 4-0, with wins over Towanda, Lewisburg, Penn Highlands and South Williamsport.

The potential of the Coach Muir team might be illustrated, in the meet last month with the Millionaires. The count was 22-18 in favor of Dick Conner's squad, until the Cherry and White heavyweight caught the Raider big man in a head lock to end the match at 28-18. Muir's lineup tonight is: 98, Lynn Ferryman; 105, Jerry Gardner; 112 Tim Traxler; 119, Bill Workman; 126, Tom Musser; 132, Mike Faulkner; 138, Tom Eckley; 145, Dave Alterio; 155, John Eckley; 167, Joe Ivic; 185, Pat Kelley, and heavy, Jeff Korman. Traxler is undefeated in dual meets, and was runnerup in the Boiling Springs holiday tournament. Ivic is 4-1, losing a one- point bout to Steve Geise of Lock Haven. Laub said he was sticking with the lineup that downed South Williamsport on Saturday night, with Tony Lorson at 98, Rich Dougherty at 105, Mike Portanova 112, Larue Shipman 119, Dave Hauser 126, Rocky Snyder 132, Jim Hartranft 138, Chuck Stone 145, Len Thompson 155, Ray Young 167, Tom Lovell 185, and Larry Rhine, heavyweight.
