Aasembly Greig 20-18 664 or fraudulent. But if they are really what they purport to be, they aro of God, and cannot be overthrown. Is it not the part of wisdom to examine rather than to ridicule? to await the result of investigation, rather than to cry humbug and deception, without investigation or even reflection? This looks rational to us, and we shall advocate this course, at the hazard of being pronounced insane ourselves by such a very competent measurer of mind as he of the Express. "Tho American system, so called, now lies cold in the grave of its chief author and advocate at Ashland. It has become entirely obsolete by the uroweBS of events and tho tendencies or the age and tho whigs, who formerly contended strenuously for its adoption, are compelled to admit that il is no longer practicable or expedient." Thus time vindicates the Democratic policy, and demonstrates the errors of its opponents.

It was as dead as it is now long before the demise of its illustrious but often erring advocate, and should not so long have been denied the last act of surviving friendship a decent interment1 But the fond hope of resuscitation, entertained by the mourners, caused the deceased to be kept above ground till its odor became very offensive. 581 1151 600 Tlio ExprtM and the Judiciary. Tbe Express of this morning comes so loaded down with editorial fustian, that wo fear for the safety of the decalogue, lest it may have suffered infraction by the production of so much and so early on Monday morning. The fust and leading one of these sabbath day elaborations, is another article abusing the highest judicial tribunal of the state, on account of thoso twenty seven thousand dollers. Never will thoso disappointed contractors lbrgive the Judiciary for snatching that big lump of plunder out of their hands, or for throwing their protective ffigis around the organic law of the state, and preserving it from farther infraction and pollution by that band of freebooters and their legislative aud executive partners and abc.tors. Did any body ever know a thiL'f or a plunderer of any kind, to love the rod that marred the skin of his back for it, or the hand that laid it on 1 It is not to be expscted, and, of course, it cannot be expected that the fancy-canal-contractors and their guilty aids in the Legislature, in the Canal Board and in the Executive chair, will ever be reconciled to the Judiciary of the state.

1057 NEW YORK Majorities. .11,177 Seymour .7950 .7515 is too ridiculous to come from any man of common sense, much less an able codifier. Not only the gist, but the whole amount of the argument against the decision, is in these words: "We hold that the decision of I he democratic Judges was absurd in its face, and plainly against law, which being so, the conclusion is irresistible, that inasmuch as principles of law did not control them, that party did." All which is as bright wisdom as the position aud conclusion of that other philosopher, who affirmed that John Snobbs, his reputed grandfather, was no such thing as his grandfather, and put down his affirmation as conclusive evidence of its own truth. Hence it became evident a posteriori that the said John Snobbs was his grandmother. The coolness with which the learned codifier assumes the fact that the decision of the court of Appeals was erroneous and with wh ch he builds his cob-house fabric on that uususlained aud unsustainable assumption is enough to make those who care for him blush for the ridiculousness of his altitude.

Let the gentleman who makcB such short work of the decision of the highest court in the state, on a constitutional question, take hold of that decision as Pierce Church Clark CAYUGA COUNTY Official. Dem. Whig. Elector! Pierce 1552 Scott 4S38 maj. 286 Governor Seymour.

'I he allusion to the special election, to prove-that "a vast miijority of the people believe the canal law to be constitutional," was a very nn-fortunateoue. The special election confined to a few localities, the most of which were along the line of the canal, where great numbers of laborers were located, who wye under the influence of the very men who were anxious, above all others, to consummate tbe enormous fraud upon the people, und the subversion of their organic law. Into these localities those of them cularly which contained small democratic majorities the whole influence, and heavy fiuaucial contributions, of all the freebooters in the state, were thrown. With all those laboring voters to work with, and with all the influence, the corrupt voting and the money of the swarm of cormorants that were ready to gorge themselves upon the carcass ef the constitution, it would have been very strange if the two or three necessary votes could not have been obtained. It certainly required an uncommon degree of hardihood and brazen impudence, to enable the fancy contractor of the Express to call up the special election as a witness to prove that a vast majority 'of the people of the state were in favor of the canal swindle, with the twenty-fwe thousand democratic majority, at the first ger.er.il election after the controversy, staring him in the face I Where are all those vaunting conspirators now, who bid defiance to the democracy, to decency and to moral integrity, and swore in the confidence of their expectation to still carry out their grand scheme of plunder, that Washington Hunt should be re-elected to the office of Governor wu aviut "vast majority which the Mate, rturing tne past year, call torto tne grateiut tribute of praise and devotion duo to our Heavenly Benefactor.

The locomotives Achilles and Thesis were drawing a heavy freight train, going east, the Achilles being ahead, and it is supposed the water became low. and the acceleia-ted motion of the engine, running down a slight grade, generated too much steam, and caused the explosion. The force of the explosion must have been tremendous.

Haven at on the corner of Broadway and Liberty streets. In a small room in the second story of the building, were stationed three grindstones, which were propelled by steam power, and on which three Germans were engaged grinding hinges. The Workmens' minds, intently fixed upon their several jobs, were in a moment of time tram formed from quiet placidness to the most bewildering sensation of terror. It is supposed that a very great velocity was applied to tbe tones, causing the centrifugal force to become immensely great so much so that the largest ol tho stones one about lour feet and a half in dialerwas hurled with tremendous forco into many pieces which flow in all tho directions to which their tangents inclined. Mr.

Philiir, who lives on tho corner of Elm and Green streets, was at work on this stone.oue piea of which struck his right leg, breaking one of the bones. Another piece flew overthe stone next to Itand striking the third one about two feet in diameter broke it, which being in motion, caused it also to fly in all directions. One of its fragments struck tbe workman engaged upon it, but did him no serious injury. Uther pieces flew through the roof and walls, breaking everything before them. The room was a perfect wreck, and the most singular part of the whole catastrophe was that the three mon were not Instantly killed The stone was from the famous Berea Quarry, and it seems that the bursting must have been produced irom no other causo than the great velocity ot which it was propelled.

We do not know how much of the reportsd spiritual manifestations is true nor how runcb is jdeijl and imaginary, nor even how much may be the imposition of tkricsters; but we do know many vastly wiser minds than that whidh presides over the columns of th Express, have rognged in the examination of these repuud spiritual pheuomina, and wo are looking with anxiety for tho result of tlnso cool and candid investigations. When thera are 10 many eminently able mind, seriously engaged in close in-vestigation of a subject, it is th part of wisdom and decency to wait th. result, or to join in the investigation; and it is the part of folly, ignorance and blackguardism, to refuse to iuvesti-ale and to revile those who will not, without exarni-nationgjoin in tho cry of "humbug." If tlionu reputed spiritual manifestations are mere chimeras of diseased imagiuu.ions, or tricks of dishonest men aud women, these investigations ara jut what will expose them and bring the truth to Jight.
