Cornell made it 24 straight yesterday, manag- lnr tn Iitfii ill i hh'i il I'lii 1 fwr BAXTER'S third consecutive year but only after a desperato battle with Penn that made, alt of the other games of the season seem like so much child's play.

The score "was 14 to 7. The Penn eleven was at least 50 per cent better than in any other game this year. The Big Red team got away to a beautiful start by scoring a touchdown In the first seven minutes of play on a pretty forward pass, but after that the Red and Blue offered a heroic defense, fully as effective and sometimes more desperate than that which held the Ithacan3 to a low score last year; a courageous, surprising defense, which coupled with two bad fumbles, slowed down the Dobie machine and at times compelled Cornell to fight desperately in her own territory. As It was the Big Red team won a fine victory over her time honored rival and to Cornellians wh' have trekked down to Franklin Field for many weary years only to have their high hopes dashed and be compelled drink the bitter cup of defeat any victory over Pennsylvania is worth while. Yet it cannot be denied that the Cornell eleven, victor over Colgate, Dartmouth and Columbia and rated as one of the really great teams of the past gained no especial prestige by today's victory.

There seemed to be some thing lacking in fire and dash. There was of course no suggestion of physical overtraining. EVEfcM -VIMS yqBAcoNjr 1 Running two plays and the plays that led up to them found the Red team going at its best, and they brought the Cornell iilituJi to their feet in a tremendous outburst of applause. In the third period Cornell rushed 60 yards only be robbed of a touchdown by Penn's last ditch stand on the goal line. In the fourth quarter 50 yards of rushing were nullified by Patterson's fumble. A chart of the game will show that in rushing the Ithacans were far tunerior to the Quakers but (he latt3r picked up a lot of yardage by the aerial game. A triple pass in the second quarter making 35 yards.

Penn covered Captain Pfann closely and he had less of a chance to shine a3 one is accustomed to see him. Early in the game he was mauled severely and to old timers it recalled the incident in the 1915 game when Barrett suffered a head injury and for a time lost his effectiveness. The great Cornell Captain has had more brilliant days than this, and yet he was the central figure in the attack, he handled the team skillfully as usual, he played a superb defensive game and made both touchdowns. Leading Scorer In Last. This gave him a total of 98 points for the year and he closes his career leading all others for Individual honors.

Patterson was very effective in the second half; Cassidy and Ramsey figure in some pretty rushes; and play was acceptable all through, and except' for that one dash by Tenn in the final period the line was master of the situation. The constant cheering in the Tenn stands also bothered the Ithacans, Captain Pfann time after time being unable to get his signals to his men. The cheering grew in volume as Cornell neared the Penn goal line and the din frequently was so great that The Game At 1:56 Penn, with Jack Dern in the lead, dashed on the field and the Penn cheering section, gave the players a rousing reception. The men contented themselves with throwing the ball around the field, McGraw got off several spectacular punts. the referee had to signal for quiet. Time after time some of the Cornell men had to ask Pfann to repeat the signals as it was impossible for them to be heard five feet away. Summed up the game was a bitter struggle all through, one that absorbed the complete interest of all times of 57,000 persons, thoroughly worthy of the long Reries of between Red and Whit? and Red and Blue, From the Cornoll point of view it was a little if one persisits in the foolish practice of rating teams but all in all a thoroughly satisfying victory won after the hardest kind of effort against game, courageous team that played way over its head. Those persons who rate Cornell solely on today's performance will hardly do justice to the really fine eleven that Gil Dobie has built this year. In all fairness, however, it mut be said, a good share of the slowing down process was due to the really inspired defensive play of the Quakers. They put up by all odds the greatest game they played this year, rising to the occasion as Penn teams always manage to do against Cornell and fighting Inch of the way.

Tenn Lacked Offense. Had they been equipped with an offense approximating their defensive play, the story of this game might have had a different, and from tha Cornell point of view, less satisfactory ending. Except, however, for a brilliant passing attack in the second period, which Captain George Pfann brought to naught by knocking down a forward pass on his own goal lino. Just as Eddie Kaw broke up a desperate aerial drive by the Red and Blue last year, and a successful 25-yard line smashing foray in the last period, made possible by an unlucky fumble by Pfann, they -were practically powerless offensively. Until that drive, a series of line plunges through guard and tackle by Sorenson.

playing nis first varsity game, Red and Blue could make no headway through the rugged Red line, and while they put Cornell In a bad hole several times by passing they had only had one other good chance to score and Pfann took care that that came to naught. i The Quakers, fighting mad. stopped or slowed down the higherto irrestj-l ble running atack, though Patterson In the second half made some pretty gains by starting on wide sweeps and then cutting In. Pfann was covered pretty effectively though occasionally he broke away and dragged several Penn men with him for substantial gains. The Penn backs played close up behind their forward offering a compact and stubborn defense that Cornell found difficult to penetrate.

Twice the Ithacans were within the Ave yard line; once in the third period Penn took the ball away on her one foot line. But tha Quakers were not smart enough, alert enough to stop Cornell's passing game, at least the two passes that gave the Ithacans their victory. One of these, a Ramsey to Pfann pass, made 25 yards and a touchdown in the first period taking Penn completely by surprise, Pfann crossing the goal line without opposition. In fact no Penn iacklers were within 10 yrds of him. Pfann Scores Touchdown.

The second, a Pfann to Kneen 25 yard pass In the fourth period was interfered with by Penn, giving Cornell the ball on the, Quakers' 5 yard line and on the next play Pfann worked the fake forward pass beautifully, drawing-, in the Penn secondary and skirting left tackle behind three man interference for a touchdown.
