Chronicle Spirit Photo Experienced Crew Mans Pirate Ship In Turbulent Football Ocean ADXA i reluming starters is a good nucleus for any coach to use in building up a football team. But, when you're playing in the Southwest Washington 8-Man Football League, nine returnees isn't just a start it's the whole team and more. That's the pleasant prospect facing Bert Downs, skipper the Adna Pirate ship, as he prepares to face the competition in what will be a stronger-than-usual 8 a league this season. Aud, while he hasn't gone so far as to order the Jolly Roger raised. Downs is planning hU future forays with a justifiable amount of optimism.

Amoflg those returning, for instance, is last year's starting quarterback Alan Good, 174, along with two halfbacks who saw a lot of action, Tim Becker, 155, and Mike Olson, 176. Olson developed into an ex- ccllent ball carrier i the latter part of the 1970 seasoa and ranked high on the league scoring list when the seasoa was completed. Downs is expecting an improved passing game for the Pirates and, to go along with Good's good arm, be has returning ends Steve Ckjlli, 61, 192; Gary Svenson, 174 and Bob Becker, 170. Beefing up the line will be i center Wayne McCarter, 5-11, 170, along with veteran guards Ed- Moerke, 6-1, 194, and Chet Morton, 5-11, m. For added help, Downs is looking over two other line prospects, Curt Back standing 6-J and weighing in at 213 pounds and Gary Hileman, 5-11 and 270 pounds.

With all that talent among a total turnout of 29 hopefuls, Downs is confident the Pirates can improve on last year's 4-3 season record. In league play, the Pirates went 4-1 and placed second, losing only to powerhouse N'apavioe. What's the biggest obstacle to a Pirate pennant? Downs expects some trouble from Pe EH, due the fart the club played ll-ciaa ball last year and should have plenty of depth with an 8-man team this time around. However, he also eipects tough battles with both Napavine and Oakville. "I think every team will be tough this year," he added.
