But on "Petticoat Junction" the new CBS-TV series on Tuesday nights the belching, wood-burning steam locomotive becomes a television star. "Old Hoot" is a replica of an 1890 model that's still in operation on a spur-line track in Son-ora, Calif. It has a top speed of eight miles an hour and consists of three parts locomotive, tender and combination passenger-baggage car. In the comedy series, starring Bea Benaderet and Edgar Buchanan, the Hooterville Cannonball makes daily trips through a quiet valley between the towns of Hooterville and Pixley, U.S.A. Its only stop is at the Shady Rest Hotel, operated by Bea, who plays a widowed mother of three gorgeous daughters.

Buchanan portrays the hotel handyman. The show's executive producer, Paul Henning, who also produces "The Beverly Hillbillies," said recently "the train's weekly appearances on TV might set the space age back 50 years and drive train buffs insane with delight, but without it our show would lose its character image." Running the railroad will be Smiley Burnette as engineer and Rufe Davis as his conductor. Smiley is the old trail partner of cowboy Gene Autry. Rufe is a veteran character actor and hillbilly comedian. About 14 years ago, 20th Century Fox Studio invested $80,000 to build "Old Hoot" for one of Marilyn Monroe's first movies, "Ticket to Tomahawk." Recently, Harvey Dick, owner of the Hoyt Hotel in Portland, Oregon, purchased the train from the studio intending to use it as a promotion gimmick for his hotel.

Before he had a chance to transport the train off the studio's back lot, George King, production supervisor for "Petticoat" spotted the "Old Hoot" and immediately negotiated with Dick for a lease. Thus, the wheezing character actor who had. been chugging around the back lot at Fox for so many years, finally got his big break! It's the same old story. The train now occupies Stage 7 at General Service Studios in Hollywood where Henning's production company, Filmways, is now shooting. nWelghs only 8 even a child can carry it Fully transistorized, with amazing new epitaxial power transistors Plays anywhere on its own rechargeable battery pack, auto boat battery or AC RESEARCH MAKES THE DIFFERENCE (p)95 (o) 0(0) NOW AVAILABLE WITH OPTIONAL UHF 5j til Open every nife 'til 9 Factory Au horized Parts and Service Easy Budget Terms Arranged FREE COME IN FOR YOUR "RANDY" CHILDREN'S BOOK iJt -1 -rr LCKAAUSIC 94 CLINTON BINGHAMTON A 3-0524.
