Suddenly I was given a regular starring role as Lt. (j. "Rip" Riddle in my own TV series, The Wackiest Ship in the Army, which will be presented in. color on NBC-TV and Channel 40 Sunday nights, starting Sept. 19.

It was great and frightening. Until now I had lived with failure. Most actors do as they wait for the big break. For a long time everything is negative you go on interviews, you wait for the roles, you take small parts hoping for big parts, you work at odd jobs parking cars, selling merchandise, hauling steel on a construction job. All the time you make excuses why you're not getting anywhere as an actor.

You find reasons why you were turned down for a role you decide the role really wasn't that good anyway, you pretent that something bigger and better is going to come along. THING that THE ONLY makes you an actor during these long, lean months be- tween roles is that you feel like an actor. You know you're an actor whether anyone else knows it or not. You even play-act at living to prove that you are an actor. You decide that all those bad-paying jobs you take are really good for you.

It's good to park cars. It's good to sell clothes in a department store. It's good to be a steel carrier under a hot sun. It's good because it gives you a chance to observe people, it gives you a chance to see the world through different eyes, it gives you a chance to feel all the emotions of living. You feed your family on hope.

You know you will make it some day, somehow. You know you will be a better actor because you have struggled as a human being. Suddenly you are given your chance. It's not just a chance it's your big chance. You wonder if you can do it.

You do it. Soon you feel confident that you can do it well, once you have a few shows under your belt. But the trouble with sudden success is that you don't get time to adjust to your new life gradually. The pressures of failure give way to the pressures of success. Suddenly you are treated with all the attention of a star wardrobe fittings, rehearsals, public appearances, promotional sessions, press interviews, photo settings, banquets in addition to knowing your lines and putting in a hard day's work before the camera five days a week.
