Official figures indicated a decline exports from the 1952 level in the New York Customs District, the department said, but it added, "figures for military-aid shipment are excluded from customs -district totals for security reasons. Since such shipments constitute a major segment of the Port of New York's trade, exports from the port are understated." Imports for the district totaled $4,200,000,000, slightly below the 1952 record level. Exports from the three upstate customs districts at Buffalo, Rochester and Ogdensburg were 7 per cent higher for 1953, hitting a total of $928,000,000, the department reported. It attributed the rise to an "increasingly significant" Canadian market for machinery and other equipment.

Imports in the three districts amounted to $687,000,000 last year, exceeding the peak of 1952. Vital Statistics Real Estate, TRANSFERS C. The rates are typical of the low rates to all other distant points. man. it is possioie, in my experience "V'" n'f shed. But to cast aspersions on a nation's cooking is deliberately to invite mayhem and massive retaliation. I BETWEEN US AND BRAIL, the first stone already has been cast by the coffee baron.

So anything I say hereinafter can scarce alter the course of history, the Monroe Doctrine or the good-neighbor policy. So let me say for the record that Brazil grows some mighty fine coffee. But when Brazilians try to turn it into a portable! Holy smoke! It ain't fit for man or beast. In the words of the Bra zilian himself, "It's undrinkable." In the first place, the Brazilian roasts his coffee until it is the color and texture of black diamonds. Next, he grinds it until it is actually finer than face powder.

And, finally, he makes his coffee in the st contraption (if you will pardon the expression and the strong feeling that animates it) ever devised for such a purpose. He makes it in an outing-flannel cone yes, I said an outing-flannel cone the mouth of which is stretched taut over a heavy circle of wire or a narrow ring of tin. ONCE, when visiting friends in Rio, I tried to make such coffee and the scar is still livid on my psyche. My hostess was having servant trouble. The Carioca cook was in love, with the result that she was always either so happy the very idea of cooking was re even more so.

When the cook failed to show one morning and I rose before the rest of the household, I decided to pay my way by getting breakfast. I took a firm hitch on the outing-flannel cone, measured the coffee and boiled the water. Then I began pouring the boiling water into the cone On top of the coffee. And nothing happened. So I stirred.

The result was an unappetizing goo to one who had ceased making mud pies some years previously. This method of coffee-making, I discovered in time, produces about one tablespoon of liquid per quarter hour. It took approximately 90 minutes to achieve the first cup of coffee. The saddest part of this tale is that after such travail, the Brazilian coffee tasted just like mud spiked with outing-flannel. My conclusion is simply this: Live and let live.

Brazilian coffee is just dandy for Brazilians. American coffee is just dandy for Americans. And outing-flannel is just dandy for nightshirts. i. 11 Ullli llin When a West German cinema recently showed a film about Rommel, six people were ejected by the police after stink bombs had been set off in the crowded theatre.
