11 STAR-PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 1950 Auto Accessories Parts 15 Special Notices i BRICK BRADFORD By Clarence Gray State Aid BUT YOU DIDN'T GET Xpy- for Fairs Sought Indianapolis, Jan. 3 UF The Indiana Association of County and District Fairs took up todzy the problem of eliminating gambling at the fair grounds. Most of the discussion was informal but Curti3 Russell of North Vernon, chairman of the association's legislative committee, advanced a plan of state aid to the county fairs. "If we can get this state aid we can clean up our fairs," Russell said, adding that the assistance is needed "because we're surrounded by states that provide money for premiums on agricultural exhibits." Dates for Fair Set Kusseu said a bill providing for state help to the county fairs is Cbunty being prepared for introduction atjporary water resources policy com THE PART ABOUT THE 5MOKEBALLS, EH Expect Battle in Filling 2nd District Post Indianapolis, Jan. 3 (JP) Second District Republicans may have a pitched battle over the district chairmanship to be filled January 16 at Winamac.

Usually well informed sources said today Iceland Smith, Logans-port lawyer and Cass County chairman, would have the backing of U. S. Senators Capehart and Jen- ner, Rep. Charles A. Halleck, district congressman, a leader of the grief-suffering Hobart Cheighton, who, defeated Senator Jenner for the governorship nomination in 1948, S3id that group would have a candidate for the chairmanship.

This leader, however, declined to advance any names. Dixon Directs Capehart Drive Dixon resigned last week to manage Senator Capehart's campaign fori, renomination and reelection. The clash between the two factions came nearly a year ago in the Sixths-district. The Capehart-Jenner forces were successful in electing Ollie Berry, of Lebanon, as district head. Smith is the oldest county chairman from the standpoint of service in the 12-county district.

He formerly was Logansport city attorney. A key figure in the Capehart-Jenner camp said the group has 14 votes one more than i.eces-sajry for Smith. This, however, was disputed by leaders on the other side. They said there were "enough still undecided" to iwing the election. There has been factional difficulty in the traditionally Republican district for many months.

The latest outbreak came several weeks-ago when the influential Lafayette Journal and Courier editorially told Dixon to either resign- as district head or quit as Capehart's campaign director. Rep. Halleck, majority leader of the 80th Congress, is a candidate for renomination in the May Nomination on the Republican congressional ticket is tantamount to election in the Second district. Halleck has been in Congress since 1935. Rename Judge Morris to State Mental Body Indianapolis, Jan.

3 (P) Governor Schricker today reappointed two members of the board for the Indiana State Teachers' Colleges. They are Robert M. Critchfield, Anderson, and John M. Heller, De catur. The reappointments are for four years effective Friday.

The governor also reappointed Judge John H. Morris, of Henry Circuit Court, to the state mental health council for a four-year term. TRUSTEES, BOARDS MEET Township trustees met with their advisory boards last night in annual sessions to make their financial reports, including all receipts and expenditures during the year just closed. Defense Attorney Vincent Hallinan touched off another flare-up at the Harry Bridges perjury-conspiracy trial today when he asked former Communist, government witness if "his gang" had authoied soeeches for the late President Roosevelt. 1 Hallinan began the 27th day of the trial by sharply questioning Paul Crouch, Miami newspaperman who testified earlier Bridges was elected in 1936 and 1933 to the party's policy-making central committee, on his writing of a resolution read by the Longshore boss at state CIO convention in 1941. Chief Prosecutor F.

In the argument that followed Hallinan said his question had to "with a remark I made the other day about this man's mentality."
