12 Centralia bus The Daily Chronicle, 98531, Wednesday. June 11,1975 Fores cut for youngsters The Centralia Cily Commission Tuesday granted a request locut fares to 25 cents for youngsters riding the Centralia bus this summer. The decrease from 50 cent to 25 cents for youngsters age six to 26 is effectively immediately and will continue until school begins this fall. There is no charge for children under age six. The decrease in bus fares was granted at the request of Jean Manicke, who (old the commissioners she wants to promote the bus as a service for everyone, not just the elderly.

Mrs. Manicke, along with Frank Hales, a specialist on aging with the Lewis County Mental Health Department, have been promoting the Centralia bus, making available free tickets to senior citizens over age 60. The tickets are subsidized under the state Older AmericanAct. The free tickets will remain available through June 30. Mrs.

Manicke said she and Hales have been going door to door distributing information on the bus and its route. She explained that many people are not aware of the bus or of the fact, in many cases, it comes within a block or two of their residence. Folmer Sogaard, Cenlralia Chamber of Commerce manager, suggested that painting the bus might serve to better identify it as a public conveyance. Mayor Don Naismith noted, however, that when the city earlier went to the chamber for advertisers, few were to be found. The intention was to cover the bus with paid advertising signs as a method of helping finance the operation of the bus.

Sogaard said few advertisers (and thus dollars) were found because the price was too steep, considering the number of people riding the bus. Naismilh said it would cost $1,000 to paint the bus. He would prefer, he added, that the money go toward extending the time the bus will be running. Naismith said he receives calls all the time. If the bus isn't running, people want to know why.

He added, "I get a lot of letters from people who appreciate the fact they have a bus." Naismith indicated the life of the bus might be extended "If we could get some of the people who ride a taxi to ride the bus." The mayor is puzzled, he said, over why people will pay $5 for a taxi when for 50 cents they can ride a bus that goes right by their house. Observing ridership charts which Mrs. Manicke brought to the meeting Tuesday, Naismith said the free tickets seem to be "a real help" to bus patronage. Ed Conzalti, public works commissioner, complimented the city's bus driver, Marvin Marker, as being responsible for much of the success the bus has had. "He's been a real Godsend," Conzatti remarked.

Naismilh added that he has received a lot of letters complimenting Marker. He is considerate and courteous to all the bus patrons, Naismith said. He is frequently getting out of the bus to help with packages or help someone on. "There's never been a bad word," the mayor said. Naismith also said he appreciates the efforts put forth by Mrs.

Manicke and Hales and commented that if- the reduced fare for youngsters works out this summer, "we may keep it." In other business, Sogaard presented a request for the commission to approve a parade a bicentennial wagon train due to arrive in Centralia June 23. The wagon train will come down the Old 99 Highway, onto Harrison Avenue when it reaches Centralia, then down Main Street turning north on Tower Avenue, continuing to Center Street and on to Pearl Avenue. On Pearl Avenue, the wagons will (ravel south to the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds, where they will stay overnight. A bluegrass musical show is being organized for the travelers the evening of June 23. The next day, the wagons are scheduled to roll through Chehalis and south out of the city on the Jackson Highway.

The commission approved the parade route and, in a related action, received an American flag and bicentennial flag from Jack Harris, manager of Montgomery Ward and Co. The firm presented the flags in honor of the bicentennial. Ralph Olson, chairman of the chamber's Bicentennial Committee, also presented a bicentennial proclamation which the mayor signed. In other actions, the commission scheduled a public hearing for July 1 on the request of Joe Hatfield for the annexation of less than one acre to the city. A claim for damages from Shannon VValker, Chehalis, was referred to the city attorney.

She claims a city vehicle damaged her car on Monday and is asking for $612. Naismith noted that the commission's meeting next week will be held on Monday, 2 p.m., not on the regular meeting date of Tuesday. The commissioners plan to attend an Association of Washington Cities meeting on Tuesday.
