The Daily Chronicle, Wednesday, June 2, 1971 Welter King Is Underdog 13 LOS ANGELES CAP) Billy Backus, the current custodian of the world welterweight boxing crown, is a decided underdog to continue wearing the chapeau he won from Jose Napoles in Syracuse, N.Y., last Dec. 3--a fact that doesn't seem to disturb him. As a relatively unknown journeyman ringster in New England, the 27-year-old Backus was an overwhelming underdog against the champion from Mexico City. But thanks to several bad eye cuts inflicted CD Napoles, the fight was stoppet in the fourth round and Backus was acclaimed as the champion the 147-pound class.
